For years now, New York’s film community has been eagerly awaiting the arrival of its very own Alamo Drafthouse, the vibrant independent theater chain based in Austin. And now, it seems, it may actually happen. But when? “Soon,” said founder and CEO Tim League during a discussion at Ifp’s Made in New York Media Center on Tuesday.

While the Brooklyn venue was expected to arrive months ago, League explained that the delay had been caused by a fire alarm control panel that somebody accidentally blew up. “We’re ready to go — the projectors have all been tested and it’s very nice looking inside.” The 25th location for the chain will have seven screens and is located at 445 Gold Street, near the Atlantic Avenue terminal in Brooklyn.

Attack The Block Blu-RaySony Home Entertainment2011/Rated R/Running Time 88 minsList Price: $35.99 -- Available October 25, 2011John Carpenter once said that when a filmmaker has limited resources, the more creative they are. In an age where most films that stand a chance of making an impact at the box-office have already been backed by millions upon millions of dollars, its rare to see low budget features at all, let alone a good one. It remains to be seen whether or not Joe Cornish's Attack the Block will make an impact at the box-office, but it definitely has the makings of a cult classic. His incredibly funny, exciting and inspiring action-horror-comedy features a simple story with performances that go above and beyond most big budget f/x pictures. At times one can feel the budget restraints of the production, yet they are not flaws, just enjoyable quirks that work surprisingly well in service of the experience.

The fantasy genre has gotten a bad rep over the years and I think I know why. Too many factions of role players, larpers and W.O.W-ers have joined forces over the world wide web to become this massive, unstoppable goliath of an easy target. What was once little groups of in-the-know outcasts playing Magic in highschool hallways is so visible that they've turned it into an easy punchline for bad comedians and films like Role Models or Your Highness to take a stab at. But That's just my theory.
The other downside to fantasy's perceived dorkery is I think it's led to a slowing down of mainstream fantasy film production and the films that do get made that fully embrace their fantasy roots either get savages by critics or dumped onto SyFy. Lord of the Rings is really the only series of films I can think of that got through unscathed.
