Where Are They Now?
boblipton18 December 2012
Warning: Spoilers
This very good Terrytoon begins with a blackout sequence showing what happened to various Mother Goose characters after they grew up. We then shift to the Big Bad Wolf, who has just been paroled after ten years in prison.

At the heart of this story is statement that times have changed. The wolf comes out of prison dressed as in Disney's THE THREE LITTLE PIGS; the pigs are now enormous boars; he changes to a zoot suit to go after little red riding hood and finds out that she is a man-hungry sophisticate out of Tex Avery's RED HOT Cinderella.

Many of the gags remain aimed at small children -- there's a concrete mixer that works like a cocktail shaker which is just the sort of conflation a child would make -- and the blackouts at the beginning undercut the surprises. Nonetheless, the liveliness with which the gags are executed keep up the fun.

Terrytoons take on Mother Goose
TheLittleSongbird16 April 2021
Mother Goose stories and seeing them parodied is not new territory in animation, having been done by numerous studios and animation directors. Sometimes done well and at other times done not too badly if fairly undistinguished at the same time. In a year dominated by Mighty Mouse and particularly the early stages of Heckle and Jeckle, 'The Wolf's Pardon' is one of only two non-recurring character cartoons from 1947. The other being 'One Note Tony'.

'The Wolf's Pardon' is the infinitely better cartoon of the two. Being somebody who didn't like 'One Note Tony', while liking if not loving 'The Wolf's Pardon'. Is it a great or perfect cartoon? No. Are there better Mother Goose/nursery rhymes cartoons? Yes. Is 'The Wolf's Pardon' worth watching? Absolutely yes and the Tex Avery influence (like in the 'Little Red Riding Hood' part), that has been noted already, was interesting, immediately noted and appreciated.

Did feel that 'The Wolf's Pardon' got off to a somewhat rough start. A bit too cutesy, the characters featured are fairly dull too, and basically a series of gags that are too throwaway that are not very inspired or very funny.

Will agree too that it is a little too derivative, namely because the premise is not a new one and it has been done with more originality elsewhere.

All that being said, 'The Wolf's Pardon' has so much to recommend. Music is fantastic and as ever with Terrytoons the best thing about 'The Wolf's Pardon'. It is beautifully and cleverly orchestrated and arranged, is terrific fun to listen to and the lively energy is present throughout, doing so well with adding to the action. Close behind was the animation, as said more than once this component has come on considerably since the Terrytoons Studio first started. Overall, it is nicely detailed, lively and colourful, with nice attention to detail and vibrant colours that don't look garish.

Furthermore, once the wolf is introduced 'The Wolf's Pardon' picks up massively. The 'Little Red Riding Hood' part is where the cartoon is at its most Avery-like in humour and also in the mature characterisation of Red herself. Actually liked the very clever and witty 'The Three Little Pigs' portion even better. The pace on the most part is lively and of all the characters faring best is the wolf, who is a lot of fun. Gags are many once the cartoon picks up and they are amusing, especially in 'The Three Little Pigs' portion.

Overall, well done. 7/10.

Very good cartoon, even if it is derivative of better work from other studios

Warning: Spoilers
This is a one shot cartoon produced by Terrytoons. There will be spoilers ahead:

Terrytoons, by and large, turned out cartoons as though they were yard goods. Never mind if the cartoon is good, bad or indifferent. Turn them out on schedule, fulfill the contract and do so as cheaply as possible in order to maximize profit. Even with all that, on occasion they managed to transcend the limits inherent in such a philosophy to turn out something good.

The stars aligned on this one, as they start with an interesting premise and then actually build a good cartoon from that starting point. Here, the basic concept is looking at various characters from the Mother Goose fairy tales some ten years into the future.

The short starts with some throwaway gags featuring Little Boy Blue (now a hot jazz trumpeter) Little Tommy Tucker (still singing, but for swooning bobbysoxers instead of his supper) and Tom, Tom, the piper's son (thief no longer, but a policeman) and then segue into the main plot, namely the Big Bad Wolf being released from prison after ten long years. Years of change, as the wolf soon learns.

First he decides to get the Three Little Pigs, only to discover that they aren't so little at this point. The gags in here are very good and the timing is better than the norm for the studio. Let's just say that things go badly for the wolf and move on.

Next, the wolf sees a sign to grandma's house and figures that Little Red Riding Hood has changed just like the pigs have, only for the better. He's changes into a zoot suit (a quick study after being out of circulation for ten years) and goes looking for Red.

It's obvious that Tex Avery's cartoons influenced this section of the short. There's nothing wrong with that. They don't do the gags as well as Avery's unit did them, but they're better than is typical for a Terrytoon. Red has indeed grown up. She winds up chasing the wolf as he's put off by her glasses and runs, in a chase sequence ala Avery.

The wolf runs into a shop (Horner's Soda Shoppe, presumably Little Jack Horner) to get away from Red. At last, the wolf has some luck and gets a happy ending which I won't spoil here.

Is this a great cartoon? No, it isn't. But, for a Terrytoon, it's impressive and it deserves to be better known. Recommended.
