Stop Howling

The Terry Bears were a staple of the Paul Terry studios for the first half of the 1950s. Comprised of a Papa Bear and two squeaky-voiced baby bears, they went through a series of domestic comedies, usually under the direction of studio workhorse Connie Rasinski.

This one appears to be a typical entry in the series. Papa Bear hears that a fierce criminal has escaped and may be in the neighborhood. The small bears state that their dog will guard them. The dog, however, is cowardly and is frightened by a mouse which gets caught in a rubber glove and Papa, who gets tangled in some sheets.

The result is a typical Terrytoon, set up to please little children with its competently executed gags. For adults, it's another mediocre effort.

Warning: Spoilers
This is a cartoon in the Terry Bears series produced by Terrytoons. There will be mild spoilers ahead:

There really isn't that much to say about this short in particular or even about the series in general. The Terry Bears shorts are pretty much all the same and they're all pretty marginal. They were space fillers on the production schedule.

In this one, Papa is watching the news and there's an announcement that a killer has escaped from prison and for people to be careful and watch out for him. Papa immediately panics and warns his two sons, who laugh and tell him that their dog will protect them and maybe catch the killer.

Naturally, the dog is a coward. The entire premise is built on the dog being frightened by just about everything. The gags all pretty much flow from that one point. The gags themselves aren't too memorable and everything has a by formula feel to it even more pronounced than most Terrytoons are. The ending is predictable and not that funny.

For completists only.
