Heckle & Jeckle put on the dog.
F Gwynplaine MacIntyre31 December 2007
'The Intruders' is an absolute top-notch Heckle and Jeckle cartoon. It actually looks TOO good to be one of their toons. The Paul Terry animation studio was never noted for large budgets nor high production values, and the strength of the Heckle & Jeckle toons was always that they were funny despite their cheapjack appearance. And yet here, surprisingly, there are some elaborately detailed and coloured backgrounds and layouts.

The two magpies are once again looking for a place to live. They fly over a swank estate, and decide to move in. But the poolside cabana is also the kennel of the resident security guard: a gruff bulldog. Naturally, he wants to chase the birds out. Mayhem ensues ... but it's quite funny, and it looks better than usual.

One animation sequence in this toon -- of Heckle and Jeckle coming out of a bath-house in swimming cozzies -- was recycled in their later (and much less impressive) offering 'Hula Hula Land'.

'The Intruders' is funny throughout, but the final gag is absolutely outrageous and hilarious. My rating: 10 out of 10.

A very good Heckle and Jeckle short
llltdesq27 April 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This is a short in the Heckle and Jeckle series produced by Terrytoons studio. There will be spoilers ahead:

Heckle and Jeckle were two magpies who were rather creative in the causing of chaos through mischief. Much of the time, their adversaries got what they deserved. On occasion, the two birds got a comeuppance which was richly deserved. This one is a mix.

On the one hand, the two birds are trying to freeload on an estate without permission and the bulldog trying to stop them is doing his job, so the boys probably deserve some of the grief they get from the dog.

On the other hand, the dog is a bit of a jerk and a bully, so he's a hard character with whom to sympathize most of the time. While the short would probably be considered violent today, it's a fairly typical H and J short from tat standpoint, possibly a bit mild by comparison to others. The best bit is where the dog is repeatedly struck with a mallet, at his request, with a delayed take on the obvious result which is very effectively done. The gags are fairly standard, but this short is better executed by Terrytoons standards, so the timing is better The ending is beautiful and I won't spoil it here. This short and the series deserve to be more widely available. Most recommended.

Well worth the intrude
TheLittleSongbird12 February 2021
People will have their own opinion of which is the best of Terrytoons' numerous theatrical series. Personally do not think it is that of Mighty Mouse, a watchable series overall but very inconsistent. The Gandy and Sourpuss series was also very hit and miss, but their hits are to me among Terrytoons' best, so they are a stronger contender. My vote though goes to Heckle and Jeckle, like Gandy and Sourpuss their best cartoons are among the studio's best.

1947's 'The Intruders' is one of the best of the Heckle and Jeckle cartoons. It is also one of the standouts of Terrytoons' 1947 batch, being one of the few to rise above good, and evidence that the studio did do good cartoons (if that ever came into doubt, despite their output being wildly inconsistent that was never in doubt with me). 'The Intruders' is one of Terrytoons' darkest (at times) and is one of the best-looking, funniest and darkest Heckle and Jeckle cartoons with one of the studio's most interesting endings.

'The Intruders' by all means is not perfect. The bulldog is one of those targets that is near impossible to feel anything for, as there are too many times where a character's negative characteristics are exaggerated, in film and television animated or not and whether short or feature length, and the bulldog here is too much of a bully.

Occasionally it is a touch too hectic.

Having said that, 'The Intruders' is very successful in every other area. Heckle and Jeckle are highly entertaining characters, their movements, the way they talk (in the use of language and the voices themselves) and their expressions make them quite unique characters for Terrytoons. The story is not novel, but the character interaction, constant entertainment value and eventful content helped always make it interesting. Some may dislike the ending, others will love. Personally did not have a problem with it, usually it is an ending that would be deemed by me as too cruel but there is a wonderful outrageousness and darkly hilarious quality to it that stops it from being overly so, if one actually sees how the bulldog acts in the cartoon there is likely to be a lot of people that are on Heckle and Jeckle's side at the end.

As was said before, 'The Intruders' is one of the best looking Heckle and Jeckle cartoons with some great animation here. Vibrant colours, nice attention to detail, far from static or simplistic backgrounds, the drawing is so much smoother than when the studio first started and the transitions are much more fluid and less choppy, nowhere near as much recycling or cutting corners either. The music never disappointed with Terrytoons, always the best asset of their worst efforts and it is one of the best things here still. It is so lovely to listen to and there is such an uplifting vibe hearing it because of the snappy character it has.

When it comes to the gags, 'The Intruders' has one of the highest gag counts for any Terrytoons cartoon up to this point and perhaps of their entire output. The cartoon is filled with them and they all range from amusing to hilarious. Likewise with the dialogue. The pace is fast and furious and the action and increasing anarchy is wonderfully chaotic, yet remarkably it doesn't feel too much of an overload.

Overall, very well done. 8/10

Heckle and Jeckle torment a bulldog
Tweekums16 July 2012
Warning: Spoilers
When the two magpies spot a rather nice looking property they land for a closer look; just in time to see a bulldog chasing a load of other creatures out. The dogs states that he won't stand for any trespassers; he didn't reckon on a visit from Heckle and Jeckle! They are soon clobbering him over the head with a mallet... after he invited them to do so to prove he was tough... he wasn't tough enough. The birds fancy a dip in the pool but the dog catches them and tells them of his intention to drown them; once again they foil his plans in their own inimitable style; to round things off they play a little croquet then blow the dog to Kingdom Come!

This short sees a new adversary for the two talking magpies; the bulldog isn't quite as funny as Dimwit and certainly elicits less sympathy from the viewer... once he's been seen chasing the other animals off the property most viewers will think he deserves the Heckle and Jeckle treatment. The treatment he got was both cruel and amusing; best gags being when they drained the pool through straws while the dog fell into it and their croquet game. The ending was also a bit of a surprise; I wasn't expecting them to kill the dog... although if they hadn't we'd have missed out on them tormenting him as he guards the Pearly Gates!

Fans of Heckle and Jeckle's anarchic style should love this one although I can see some people thinking they are just too malicious to be considered funny; especially the final gag.
