Comic Book Land is a pretty good Terrytoons short starring Gandy Goose and Sourpuss
tavm25 March 2008
Warning: Spoilers
This was a pretty entertaining Gandy Goose/Sourpuss cartoon that has the Goose and Cat dreaming of being inside of a comic book with some musical entertainment that reuses a female dancing mouse from another Terrytoon short. They also encounter a giant that steals all the comics. One of the characters that stars in these picture magazines is Mighty Mouse. Guess who saves them from the giant? Not much that I found funny but it moves well and picks up in the last 3 minutes. I stumbled upon this on YouTube which has a lot more Mighty Mouse cartoons available there. If you're a Terrytoons enthusiast who's long seeked many of these vintage animated shorts, YouTube is probably the perfect place to go.

In the land of comics

Generally the Terrytoons cartoons are worth watching, if for some for one time only and mostly to be seen for completest sake, if wanting to see all of their available cartoons. That was my main reason for seeing them. The studio's quality though is very variable. Some of their cartoons are decent, few great, and a lot of average ones but there are a lot of lacklustre or less ones. Was not a fan of most of the 1949 Terrytoons cartoons generally, but some were worth seeing.

'Comic Book Land' is one of the ones worth seeing. The whole Gandy and Sourpuss in a dream concept is nothing new, though had not been visited for quite a while, and was executed with varied success. Despite not being a great cartoon, 'Comic Book Land' is one of their better dream endeavours and a good indicator of how surprisingly well matched Gandy and Sourpuss are as a pairing and how much Gandy had grown as a character since his late 30s solo outings.

A lot of good things can be seen here in 'Comic Book Land'. It looks great and is one of the best-looking Gandy and Sourpuss cartoons. That the animation fares very well here was not a surprise as this aspect had come on enormously by this point with Terrytoons. It is nicely detailed, lively and colourful without being garish, particularly in some imaginative visuals in the dream sequence. Again, the music, the thing that was the most consistently good thing from the very beginning with Terrytoons, is a big strength. It is beautifully and cleverly orchestrated and arranged, is terrific fun to listen to and the lively energy is present throughout, doing so well with adding to the action.

There are a fair share of amusing, if never hilarious, moments and the comic book land setting is imaginatively and affectionately done, almost like a love letter to something that was a big part of many people's childhoods and very dear to many. Both Gandy and Sourpuss come over well, Sourpuss is funnier and more interesting but Gandy has come on a long way since being partnered with Sourpuss. They sound so mismatched on paper, but are quite fun together. The second half is exciting and charming.

Expectedly though, the story is very predictable and pretty much the same Gandy and Sourpuss dream formula but in a different setting. Also thought that it took a bit of time to get going and that the pace could have been tighter in the first quarter or so. There could have been more gags and certainly ones that had more creativity and wit.

Inevitably, one can be forgiven for thinking that Terrytoons were running out of ideas and doing a lot of recycling. The ending did feel rushed and abrupt, some may find it a cheat too but if familiar with this type of cartoon in the Gandy and Sourpuss series it should come as no surprise as to what type of ending it would be.

Overall, decent if not exceptional. 6/10.
