An Aesop's short in which Farmer Al Falfa proves himself to be a dim bulb indeed
llltdesq12 February 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This is a Terrytoons silent short with Farmer Al Falfa and a cat. There will be spoilers ahead:

This short has the strengths and weaknesses of the typical Paul Terry short. It starts off in one direction and then takes a sharp left turn before coming back around to the beginning again. A fair amount of repetition and very simple gags in this, as is usually the case.

A cat is wooing his lady fair, but every time the pair get close, a little pest or three interpose between them. The cat, not being overly bright, bribes the first one to go away-which guarantees that they'll have more company repeatedly, as it reinforces undesirable behavior and make him look like a soft touch.

Eventually, the cat runs out of money and goes to Farmer Al Falfa for money, but's he's tapped out too. This is where Al proves to be rather foolish. The cat talks him into fighting a boxing match for the purse, with the cat getting the purse. Al doesn't seem to get that he's going to get pounded for the cat's benefit and goes in the ring against an ape.

Al, to no one's surprise, gets pounded for a round. The cat cheats after that and Al actually "wins" the fight. The cat makes off with a bag of money and we come full circle, with the cat finally getting to be alone with his girl.

This short is available online and is worth watching. Not bad for an early Paul Terry.
