The "Batman" of the Brave Series
daltonbrooks29 March 2017
Brave Express Might Gaine is the fourth installment of the Brave Series that ran from 1990 to 1999, though sequels/reboots such as Betterman and GaoGaiGar Final: Grand Glorious Gathering followed in the early 2000s.

The series focuses on billionaire Maito Senpuhji, who is the main chairman of the Senpuhji Concern, and runs his company with his friend Hamada, his assistant Izumi, and his grandfather. In order to counter giant criminal robots, along with many other threats, he uses Might Gaine, an overpowered super-robot, along with a whole team of other train-themed transforming robots called the Brave Express, to keep these criminals at bay. The first season (episodes 1-26), for the most part, has the basic "monster of the week" formula, but it's still generally entertaining, and there's a layer of mystery to Maito's past. This season also introduces most of the villains you see in the show, including Professor Wolfgang, a mad scientist, Catherine Vuitton, a Catwoman-like millionaire thief with a butler named Audrey, and a mafia leader named Hoi Kow Loh and his assistant Shinja. The most interesting villain of the show, however, is Ace no Joe (or Joe the Ace), an ex-military mecha pilot, whose skills are on par with those of Maito. He's a very dark, mysterious character with very interesting developments. I won't spoil anything, but to say the least, he steals the show as far as villains go, and in season 2, he and Wolfgang have a very fascinating chemistry.

Overall, Might Gaine has a lot of positives. It's not the absolute best of the Brave Series, and it does get a little cheesy here and there, but it's overall a solid show, and I highly recommend it.
