Reissued on Vol. 115 of Something Weird's Dragon Art Theatre series, THE LAST SEX ACT is a pointlessly titled movie about the search for a missing heir. Unfortunately for the fans, then and now, the creepy old wheelchair bound protagonist inflicts himself on the leading ladies in several sex scenes -ugh! Brain-dead shill for SWV touts in the notes on the back of the video box that the film gives us a tour of L.A. sex emporiums circa 1975. Unfortunately for this "film historian" this is quite obviously a shot-in-Manhattan opus.
With noir narration by the hero "Neil Ronds" as detective Drake, film typically opens with the umpteenth lifting of Jerry Goldsmith's great CHINATOWN theme music, followed up (as helpfully reminded in IMDb credits) by the equally familiar strains of Charles Lloyd's "Forest Flower", which I recall played virtually on an hourly basis by the jazz stations back in 1965.
Drake is hired by old coot McPherson (yucky old porn actor Fred Fagen) to find his long-lost son Chris, as daddy is expecting to kick the bucket soon and wants an inheritor.
Clue as to Chris' present whereabouts keep leading Drake to a sleazy Gotham strip club where a mixed combo of girls dance together or perform lesbian sex. McPherson also has a couple of gals constantly servicing him, including TV hostess Robin Byrd, accorded no speaking lines in this early screen appearance.
Drake also makes love to Erica Havens, young starlet memorable in the title role in Joe Davian's PITFALLS OF BUNNY.
SPOILER ALERT:
Ultimately the mystery is resolved when stripper Chrissy (Jenny Cole) reveals to Drake right after having anal sex with him that she is in fact the mysterious Chris, having had a sex change in Denmark. When daddy McPherson is duly informed of this fact he has a fatal heart attack. This opens the floodgates at film's end for a (horror of horrors!) potential sequel, as Drake makes a long-distance call to Malibu to seek out a second missing son who ended up in the forestry service.
Anonymous filmmakers of THE LAST SEX ACT made a key decision to only cast ugly women and that's really all you need to know. The private dick Drake resemble John C. Reilly (who spoofed such parts in his breakthrough role in BOOGIE NIGHTS), which porn-wise is not necessarily a good thing.
Byrd was similarly forced to have sex with the repellent Fagen in another stinker, LENNY'S COMEBACK, but fortunately his novelty act didn't catch on with fans who, Aunt Peg, Kay Parker and Candy Samples excepted, tended to prefer their porn stars underage.
