Educational for young students who may not be classical fans.

Although for the most part historically inaccurate, this film has a great place for use in the classroom. The films in this series provide a good outlet along with a story that children can follow all whilst hearing the music of Franz Liszt, also pointing out some of his unique contributions to the romantic era. Set in the middle of Liszt's performance career, we deal with a Liszt that is struggling to gain fame as a composer. Along the way, Liszt is challenged by a stubborn new pupil with outstanding talent. This is where the historical inaccuracies begin, however it is important to note that the "story" is just a means to an end. That end: a greater understanding of Liszt and his music. If you were to show this film in the classroom I would recommend you seek out the Teacher's guide for this series. Best suited for students grades 4-8.

An inaccurate portrayal of Liszt
Jory_8 April 2000
As is often the case with movies relating to classical music, the historical elements of the plot tend to be skewed to the point of absurdity. "Liszt's Rhapsody" is no exception. Not only do most of the characters sport unmistakable North American accents, but execution of the plot occurs in a distinctly modern fashion, thereby eliminating any mid-nineteenth century examples of wit, behaviour, or social practices. The character of Liszt is presented in a very inaccurate way. Among many things, he is insecure about his music and his ability (or inability) to compose, and his reactions to adversity are extremely childlike, such as banging on the piano to irritate his friend. Such a character portrayal does not represent Liszt in any useful way. "Liszt's Rhapsody" falls way short of the mark of quality, and it should be questioned why the historical figure of Franz Liszt was even used as a basis for this film.
