The Democratic National Convention kicked off Monday with a host of speeches from powerful luminaries, including First Lady Michelle Obama, Senator Elizabeth Warren, and Senator Bernie Sanders. Yesterday, a different set of luminaries spoke at the convention, specifically famous actresses. Last night, “Girls” star and creator Lena Dunham, former “Ugly Betty” star America Ferrera, and “Pitch Perfect 2” director and “Hunger Games” actress Elizabeth Banks took on Donald Trump and all that he stands for.

Dunham and Ferrera opened their speeches with cheeky references to Donald Trump’s careless attitude towards women and immigrants. Actress Elizabeth Banks took the stage Tuesday night at the Democratic Convention to Queen’s “We Are The Champions” — complete with fog-machine accompaniment — in a jab at Donald Trump’s entrance at last week’s Republican National Convention. “When I tuned into Cleveland last week I thought, ‘Hey, that’s my act,'” Banks, who plays deranged host Effie Trinket in “The Hunger Games” series of films, said. The classic-rock group took the Gop to task for using its iconic tune “We Are the Champions” at the Rnc in Cleveland last week. The song was played as Trump walked out on stage,...

They were in Cleveland - but defiantly not #RNCinCLE. When it comes to booking the big showbiz entertainment Donald Trump promised for jazzing up his Republican National Convention, Third Eye Blind and Rick Springfield want to be very clear that they are not it. "We performed at a benefit for Musicians on Call because we support their mission in bringing music to the bedsides of patients in hospitals," Third Blind Eye's Stephan Jenkins wrote on Facebook. "We did not play a Republican National Convention event." He added, "Given that the benefit was held in Cleveland, we suspected that convention types...

If you follow Hayley Atwell (Captain America: The First Avenger) on Twitter, you probably know by now that over the past few weeks, she's more or less become the queen of Dubsmash, a popular new iOS app that allows users to lipsync with popular songs, movie lines, and a variety of other sounds. Over the past weekend at San Diego Comic-Con, Atwell found her Dubsmash skills put to the test as she and Agent Carter co-star James D'Arcy (Let's Be Cops) found themselves locked in a fierce competition with Clark Gregg (The Avengers) and the cast of Marvel's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.. In case you missed Cbm's recap on Sunday night, the final entry featured the full Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. cast singing along to Queen's "We Are The Champions" before revealing Gregg decked out in a full Peggy Carter outfit, red hat and all. Following that entry,...

After Super Bowl Xlix was all said and done, after Katy Perry owned the halftime show with meme-able moments and hot sharks, after all the great commercials, and even the super bummer Nationwide one, and after Tom and Gisele shared a sweet, victory kiss, Jimmy Fallon came up big with the one thing every Super Bowl Sunday desperately needs -- Queen!
The late night host joined The Roots for a star-studded a capella cover of "We Are The Champions" featuring Carrie Underwood, Sam Smith, Ariana Grande, Blake Shelton, Usher, Meghan Trainor, One Direction and Christina Aguilera. Watch below.

Tonight marks the opening night of the 2014 NFL Season, so in celebration, here are the 10 best songs about sports. I tried to make it all football, but there are surprisingly few football-themed hits. And since it’s still baseball season, I decided to throw in a few baseball ones as well. Basketball? Other than “I Believe I Can Fly,” the round ball got left out in the cold since the only other basketball song I could think of was Cheech & Chong’s “Basketball Jones,” which, quite frankly, is in a league of its own. Given that the World Cup just ended, I also threw in a little soccer love. Though certainly not written about football, Jay Z and Rihanna's "Run This Town" is the new theme song for Thursday Night Football, according to NFL and CBS. The pair's hit, from Jay Z's "The Blueprint 3," will get reworked each week with narration by Don Cheadle.

Mark looks back at the much-reviled Matrix sequels and asks: what went wrong?
Feature
This article contains spoilers for the Matrix trilogy.
It seem like a long time ago to some of our younger readers, but those who were there will remember that 2003 was branded “the year of the Matrix” by Warner Bros. Four years after the first film knocked everybody's socks off, Andy and Lana Wachowski made two sequels, an animated anthology, a video game and numerous other tie-ins to expand upon a world that was only hinted at in the original.
The Matrix Reloaded became the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time when it was released in May and held that record until the following Easter's The Passion Of The Christ. A vitriolic critical reception and bad word of mouth undercut any chance that the final instalment, The Matrix Revolutions, had in terms of topping its predecessor when...

Rocksmith 2014 Edition, the sequel to the self-teaching guitar experience from 2011, is being released next Tuesday and it’ll be armed with 55 songs. Ubisoft released the entire tracklist ahead of the October 22nd launch today and Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC gamers will be treated to the likes of Aerosmith, Bob Dylan, Nirvana, Queen and The Police, among other top artists from the golden years of rock.
Ubisoft also announced that downloadable songs purchased for the first game will be compatible with Rocksmith 2014 Edition. There will also be the option to import the disc-based songs from the original Rocksmith to play in the new sequel, but there will be a nominal fee charged for the privilege.
Rocksmith 2014 Edition allows gamers to learn how to play a real guitar or bass guitar by plugging an instrument in to their gaming console. The game determines the skill level of the player and adjusts the difficulty of lessons accordingly.

Are you outraged by the April 3 results show of ‘American Idol?’ I am. After Jimmy Iovine said Lazaro should go home, he ended up in the top three! Instead, Burnell Taylor was sent home. Do you agree with the results?
Judges Nicki Minaj, Mariah Carey, Keith Urban and Randy Jackson were visibly shocked when Lazaro Arbos was pronounced safe in the April 4 results show. Not only that, he was in a top three spot, although it was not revealed which one! According to our Hl poll, 78 percent of you disagree with the results last night. Sadly, Burnell Taylor was sent home. Do you think it should have been Lazaro?
Jimmy Iovine Slams Lazaro Arbos
Mentor Jimmy Iovine was not a fan of Lazaro last night, and he really hasn’t been a fan since the beginning of the season. He was way harsh last night, saying Lazaro’s duet with Angie Miller was “cabaret.

Tonight American Idol sets out to prove that Rock and Roll is here to stay! No slow ballads. Just up-tempo numbers to get us up and off our couches. Maybe.
Will the contestants rise to the challenge of faster tempos and harder beats? Let's find out now...
Burnell Taylor chose to start the night with the Bon Jovi anthem "You Give Love A Bad Name." He's a little uncomfortable making his way from the lower stage to the upper, but it's fantastic to see him take the mic off the stand and move a little more than just his hands. He played it close to the original and did a solid job even if he didn't do anything incredibly novel with the interpretation. He definitely stepped out of his comfort zone and seemed to have a good time. Keith said he looked uncomfortable in the song and gave him the...

It was rock and roll week on the April 3 episode of ‘American Idol.’ Some contestants rocked while others flopped. Read the full recap below.
The top 7 took on classic rock songs while judges Nicki Minaj, Mariah Carey, Keith Urban and Randy Jackson listened intently. Plus, is a love connection forming between Burnell Taylor and Amber Holcolm?
The Top 7 Sing Rock & Roll
Burnell Taylor sang “Shot Through The Heart.” “I’ve never seen you look more uncomfortable up there,” Keith said. “Even outside your genre, stay Burnell because that’s what people are voting for,” Nicki said. Randy said he was behind the tempo.
Lazaro and Angie did a duet to “Crazy Little Thing Called Love.” Lazaro sort of forgot the words…again. “Overall, not bad,” Nicki said. “Angie you sounded really good. Lazaro, you got better as the song went on,” Randy said. “It wasn’t a great duet for me,...

I can’t get no satisfaction — not when it comes to American Idol‘s Season 12 theme nights, anyway.
I know, I know: A couple weeks back I put together a gallery of potential alternatives to the usual “Songs That Inspire” and “Songs From the Year You Were Born” — and I’d actually included “’80s Rock” and “No Ballads Allowed” among my 22 suggestions. So you think that Fox’s official announcement of “Classic Rock, No Ballads” for Top 7 night would’ve been cause for nothing but a joyful Headbangers Ball up in Casa Slezak.

All Queen fans dine out how their favourite quartet completely stole Live Aid out from under the posturing of Bono and the swearing of Bob. What fewer people talk about is how that 17-minute triumph kick-started a recording and touring renaissance for a band that hadn't had to try very hard for a long time.

From "Killer Queen" to Angry Bird: Freddie Mercury has been immortalized as an honorary character of the popular video game, just in time for the rock legend's Sept. 5 birthday.
In this quirky video, which was posted on YouTube Monday by Angry Birds creator Rovio Entertainment, the famed Queen frontman stars as a mustachioed yellow bird -- complete with chest hair, bad teeth and a regal crown.
Set to the Queen's cheeky 1978 hit "Bicycle Race," the clip features Freddie Mercury as the "Angry Bird Queen" riding -- what else? -- a bicycle with some other feathered friends before facing off with a decidedly less cool king pig.
The video was created in support of the annual Freddie for a Day campaign, which always coincides with Mercury's birthday. The campaign, which sees people around the world dressing up as the renowned rock icon, raises money and awareness for The Mercury Phoenix Trust,...

“Like it or not, the words ‘openly gay’ are Always going to precede my name in the media. But I don’t carry that heavily. Everyone else does.”
Adam Lambert is incredibly relaxed about dealing with the question he must be tired of answering, especially after he made history as the first ‘openly gay’ singer to top the Us Billboard Chart with his second album Trespassing earlier this year.
Adam Lambert can carry controversy easily on his shoulders

Van Halen's 'Jump' has topped a poll of the most popular sporting songs. The Performing Right Society (Prs), a UK association of composers, songwriters and music publishers, held a sport-themed poll among members to celebrate the run-up to the Olympics. Other tracks featured include stadium favourites 'We Are The Champions' by Queen, 'Simply the Best' by Tina Turner, and the theme from Chariots of Fire by Vangelis. Prs chairman Guy Fletcher said: "We are so excited about the Olympic Games and music plays such a classic role for both the spectator and participant. A recent study by doctors Alisun Pawley and Daniel Mullensiefen seeks to answer the question: Why do we sing along to certain pop songs and not others?
Pawley, a teacher, musicologist and musician who just wrapped a tour of Sweden with the Blossom Street Singers, said this is the first study of its kind, and it's taken her and Mullensiefen about six years to finalize the data.
"I originally got this idea by wondering whether pop songs were written specifically so amateur singers could sing along with them," she said. "But that definitely wasn't the case."
To research the project, Pawley spent 30 nights "undercover" at clubs and bars in the U.K., factoring in variables like time of night, proximity to a big city, vocal performance, lyric intelligibility and gender. She attended 1,050 "song events" and analyzed 636 songs. The study is expected to be published later this year in the Music Perception journal.

Now that begging can become reality as the official tribute band of Queen is officially on tour! Its so good that you can't miss it! I'll admit it that I have always wanted to see Queen but was never able to see the band when it was led by the iconic Freddy Mercury, but now thanks to The Queen Extravaganza I am getting a taste of what I have been missing! In a two-set show that runs just over two hours, the band performs nearly 40 Queen classics drawn from a list of the band’s biggest all-time chart hits: “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Another One Bites The Dust,” “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” “Under Pressure,” “We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions,” “A Kind Of Magic,” “Radio Ga Ga,” “Somebody To Love” and “Killer Queen.

Compared to other mega-selling bands like say, The Beatles, the story behind Queen is not quite as widely known. Formed in London in the early ‘70s, the band was responsible for a slew of hits over the two decades or so, traversing genres from rock to opera to disco, sometimes within the same song, before singer Freddie Mercury died of AIDS in the early ‘90s. Told through archival footage and interviews with two of the band’s principal members, guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor (bassist John Deacon has quietly refused to participate in any of the band’s recent activities since retiring a few years ago), “Queen: Days Of Our Lives” is a compelling overview of the classic band’s career. The group originally formed during college as an outfit called Smile before Mercury joined up and renamed the band which would eventually go on to record a...

Well, it’s happened America!! Rolling Stone is reporting that American Idol runner-up and favorite person to drink on-camera martinis with, Adam Lambert, has announced that he is going to be replacing the late Freddie Mercury as the lead singer of Queen. Here’s what Adam had to say about the news: The intention is to pay tribute to Freddie and the band by singing some f*cking great songs. It’s to keep the music alive for the fans and give it an energy that Freddie would’ve been proud of. It’s a decision that, while surprising, shouldn’t ruffle too many oversized feather vests. Look, no one can replace Mercury, and that goes double for his mustache. But Lambert’s vocal abilities are certainly up to the challenge for Queen’s passionate repertoire. For example, 99 percent of people who attempt to sing Queen usually end the night...

The MTV European Music Awards were last night. For those of you not familiar with the EMAs, the quickest way to explain it is that they’re like the VMAs, only with a lot more exposed penis. Which makes it the perfect venue for our beloved Adam Lambert to get up on stage and rock out with his virtual c*ck out, singing lead for none other than legendary band Queen. Adam is a sort of a vocal second-coming of Freddie Mercury, and this was a collaboration many have dreamed about, presumably while stroking a body pillow covered in leather wearing an Elvis wig and guyliner. Adam spends the first minute of the performance in the dark belting out the first few lines of “The Show Must Go On” while a series of anti-epilepsy strobe lights flash in the background. What follows is an epic 8 minutes of Adam and Queen...

Queen have topped a list naming the catchiest songs in music history. Scientists have researched what variables in a song inspire people to sing along in public, the Daily Record reports. Experts found that the impromptu urge to sing along to a song can be credited to four different elements. These are a long and detailed musical phrase, multiple pitch changes in a song's hook, the song being led by a male vocalist and the male vocal being in a higher key. Queen's 'We Are The Champions' came out on top, while The Village People's 'Y.M.C.A.' and Sum 41's 'Fat Lip' came in second and third respectively. 'The Final Countdown' by Europe and 'Monster' by The Automatic completed the top five. Music psychologist Dr Daniel Mullensiefen explained: "Every musical hit is reliant (more)...

X Factor judge Louis Walsh has insisted that he was right to criticise Katie Waissel on Saturday night’s show, insisting that the public won’t get her quirky style either.
Katie split the judges with her performance of Queen’s ‘We Are The Champions’ at the weekend. Louis Walsh didn’t like it and said:
Katie when you first auditioned I thought you were more style than substance and after that performance I haven’t really changed my mind. I don’t know who Katie is, it’s a little of Madonna, it’s a little bit of Gwen Stefani and I honestly think the song was too big for you.
In a later interview with X magazine, he added:
There’s something about Katie I do like, but I just don’t think the public get her. That was my problem. There are so many brilliant girls in the show,...

Katie Waissel was said to be furious on Saturday, after Simon Cowell insisted that Treyc Cohen close the first X Factor live show instead of her.
Katie, dressed up in a strange helmet and posing with a keyboard, was supposed to be closing the show with her quirky performance of ‘We Are The Champions.’ However, after Cowell heard the girls in dress rehearsal and realised how phenomenally well Treyc could belt out U2′s ‘One,’ he changed the running order.
An insider told The Sun:
“He was genuinely stunned by how good Treyc was. He was blown away. He hadn’t seen her at Judges’ Houses and felt he had missed something really special.
“Katie had been due to close the show and had one of the most elaborate sets and costume for that reason.

In her pre-performance Vt, Simon Cowell, admitted that Katie Waissel has a lot to prove on tonight’s X factor show.
The 24 year old made it into Cheryl’s top three, despite some tears, breakdowns and a ridiculous amount of shots at fame before.
Tonight Katie sang Queen’s We Are The Champions for her first live performance. Weirdly she sported a huge feathery helmet thing and stood behind a keyboard, though we don’t think she was actually playing a note. Once we bypassed that distraction, we realised that Katie was actually singing rather well. She has a very distinctive voice and she was vocally sound tonight.

X Factor hopeful Katie Waissel has admitted that she was ‘absolutely gutted’ when she found out she may be axed from the show.

After leading one of the best bands in rock history and dying a tragic death due to AIDS complications, a movie about the life of Queen front man Freddie Mercury has a lot of great material to work with, and Deadline (via CinemaBlend) has the news that such a project is moving forward. What’s the most exciting thing about this by far is that he’ll be portrayed by Sacha Baron Cohen, best known for Borat and Bruno, along with roles in films like Sweeney Todd and Talladega Nights, among others.
The production will be handled by Gk Films, Tribeca Productions, and Queen Films, and the film will focus on the formation of the band and end at their performance for Live Aid in 1985, considered by some to be one of the greatest live performances in the history of rock music.
