To hear Jake McDorman describe his first time reading a scene from “Mrs. Davis” is akin to watching the show itself. “You’re like, ‘I think it’s funny. I think it can be funny. Or maybe I’m completely misinterpreting this and it’s a drama. I don’t know,” McDorman tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview.
But as McDorman and viewers have found out, the new Peacock drama “Mrs. Davis” is all of that and more: it’s a serious drama with room for slapstick comedy, barbed banter, and swooning romance that’s also about technology and religion and the very nature of humanity. Star Betty Gilpin has called the show “No Country for Looney Tunes,” and the references to Joel and Ethan Coen and Bugs Bunny are no better exemplified than with McDorman’s character, Wiley. He’s a rodeo cowboy who also runs a...

For some, one of the best scene in 1978’s “Grease” is when Sandra sleeps over with her new group of girl friends from Rydell High as they sing “Look at Me, I’m Sandra Dee,” hair rollers in and heartthrob celebrities like Elvis plastered on their teenage girl bedroom walls. Now, the origins of that beloved girl gang, who call themselves the Pink Ladies, are at the center of a new prequel series on Paramount+, released today.
Set in 1954, four years before Sandy and Danny’s whirlwind romance, “Grease: The Rise of the Pink Ladies,” explores how four Rydell High outcasts forged a friendship and became the forebears to the Pink Ladies from the original film, such as Rizzo and Frenchy. “What the fuck is happening?”
That was Steven Yeun’s reaction while shooting the cataclysmic climax of “Beef,” which he leads with Ali Wong. The Netflix and A24 dramedy opens plausibly enough with a road-rage scene between Wong’s Amy, an entrepreneur whose easygoing nature masks secret desires, and Yeun’s Danny, a contractor who goes to extremes to obtain what he wants. But that initial conflict drives both to exact bizarre acts of revenge on each other, revealing the darkest corners of their psyches. The result? Chaos. In one scene, Amy masturbates with a gun; in another, Danny urinates all over her bathroom — and that’s just the beginning. Seeded throughout are quiet explorations of the characters’ anger, loneliness and fear.
“Both assume incorrectly that they cannot show their true selves to anyone in their lives,” says Lee Sung Jin, the creator and showrunner of “Beef,” which premieres on...

It’s Monday afternoon and Quinta Brunson, creator, writer and star of “Abbott Elementary,” is about an hour away from walking into 30 Rockefeller Plaza for her first meeting with the writers of “Saturday Night Live.”
She’s been a fan of “SNL” since childhood, watching the series with her family growing up in Philadelphia. Now, on Saturday night, she’ll make her Studio 8H debut with some of those friends and family — many of whom are based on the east coast — in the audience to cheer her on.
“It’s surreal. I’m just taking it day by day — like I normally do because everything is so surreal nowadays — but this one’s really exciting,” Brunson tells Variety, calling from New York City. “‘SNL’ is the reason I even started pursuing comedy as a career, to be asked to host is just unreal. “Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies” music producer and songwriter Justin Tranter says their prolific career actually started with a passion for musicals.
“Musicals are why I started making music as a kid. Even though I was in a rock band and now I make pop music, musicals are why I started making music in the first place,” the Grammy-nominated songwriter told Variety at the Paramount+ series’ premiere Wednesday night in Los Angeles. Tranter has worked with Ariana Grande, Dua Lipa, Selena Gomez, Lady Gaga, the Chicks, Leon Bridges, Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber, just to name a few.
After “fighting hard” to join “Rise of the Pink Ladies” and providing demos for showrunner Annabel Oakes, the two then teamed up with choreographer Jamal Sims for the series. Along with some co-writers, Tranter wrote and produced 30 original songs for the 10-episode season.

It's been nearly two years since "My Adventures With Superman," an animated collaboration between HBO Max and Cartoon Network was announced alongside a new, noir-inspired "Batman" animated series from J.J. Abrams and "The Batman" director Matt Reeves.
Starring Jack Quaid as Clark Kent/Superman, Alice Lee as Lois Lane, and Ishmel Sahid as Jimmy Olsen, "My Adventures With Superman" was pitched as a show centered on the trio of friends as twenty-somethings interning for the Daily Planet, and finding themselves as individuals along the way. With its familiar, cutesy aesthetics, it was stacked up to be a promising, family-friendly series to add to the animated catalog on HBO Max.
Public coverage on the show has been suspiciously quiet since its initial announcement — and due to a tyrannical purge of Cartoon Network shows on the HBO Max platform last year thanks to the Warner Bros. Discovery merger, it seemed there was...

The Boys supervillain Homelander is just as maniacally insecure in short-form animation as he is in live-action.
In 2021, after two seasons of critical acclaim and a season two Emmy nomination for outstanding drama series, Amazon Prime Video expanded the world of The Boys, its no-holds-barred satire of superhero storytelling and modern-day America. And in March 2022, the second addition to the Boys shared universe, The Boys Presents: Diabolical, premiered with eight animated shorts, each utilizing anthology storytelling and a unique animation style.
The Boys and Diabolical executive producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg originally approached comedy triumvirate The Lonely Island (Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, Akiva Schaffer) to write an episode, but Samberg himself had a rather unexpected idea. “I have a long-running rule of when Seth and Evan call me, I just say, ‘What is it?’ And the answer is almost always yes,” Samberg...

Hulu’s upcoming limited series “Mike” is the most serious attempt to date at giving Mike Tyson’s life and boxing career the cinematic treatment. But Tyson is not too happy about the project.
The boxer took to Twitter this weekend to complain about Hulu producing the unauthorized show without his consent.
“Hulu stole my story,” Tyson tweeted. “They’re Goliath and I’m David. Heads will roll for this.” He later added that “Hulu’s model of stealing life rights of celebrities is egregiously greedy.”
This isn’t the first time that Tyson has complained about the Hulu series. In a previously-deleted Instagram post, he wrote that: “Hulu’s announcement to do an unauthorized mini-series of the Tyson story without compensation, although unfortunate, isn’t surprising.”
It’s possible that Tyson’s opposition to the series is partially fueled by the fact that it is competing with a separate project that he is developing.

Hulu is in early development stages of adapting Invisible Man as a series, reports Variety. The streaming outlet, which acquired the rights to the 1952 novel from the Ralph and Fanny Ellison Charitable Trust, is moving forward with their small-screen serial adaptation, having appointed John Callahan as executive producer. Indeed, The Handmaid’s Tale proved to be a proverbial North Star for the streaming outlet, something that tends to occur after winning eight Emmy awards for a single season of television. As Hulu’s senior Vice President of content, Craig Erwich, told the trade shortly after those September wins:

The joy of each new season of Fargo is piecing together just what in the hell is actually going on, while all of the key players stumble to their starting positions. Getting your bearings in this show is equal parts fun and frustrating, as the plot has no real intention of revealing itself, and yet there's so much crazy going on that it doesn't much matter anyway. Fargo is all about the journey, and since the destination will undoubtedly be vicious and brutal, it's best to enjoy the fun parts of the ride while you can.

About a month ago news broke that a new remake of The Fly was in development with Sleight director J.D. Dillard. As much as a enjoyed Sleight and think the director has some talent, It's hard to get behind another remake of The Fly, especially after what David Cronenberg did with it.
The film is still in the early stages of development, but Dillard recently talked to /Flim about the remake and he seems pretty excited about it. He starts out be explaining that his approach and how he's starting with the character:

It hasn’t taken long for J.D. Dillard to make an impression on the Powers That Be. One month before the big opening of Sleight, his feature film debut of magic and coming-of-age drama, the writer-director came attached to 20th Century Fox’s remake of The Fly.
A modern reimagining of David Cronenberg’s body-horror classic of ’86, Dillard initially opened talks with Fox to shepherd the remake alongside writing partner Alex Theurer. It’s still early, early days, but the director is already well invested in the property, as the folks at /Film discovered in a recent interview.

Pierce Brosnan and Keely Shaye Smith have been together for 23 years (and married for 16), but the longtime couple could still pass as a pair of love-struck teenagers. While walking the red carpet on Monday for Pierce's upcoming show, AMC's The Son, they only had eyes for each other. Photographers snapped away as they giggled, shared a few cheek kisses, and basically looked like they were in their own little world. In a 2013 interview, Pierce credited meeting Keely after the loss of his first wife, Cassandra Harris, as a life-changing moment for him. "She is the most beautiful woman and someone who has been my North Star for many a day and a year now," he said. "We met when I was like Philip, adrift. I'd lost my wife and been a widower for three years. Keely is the backbone of our family, of my life, and I tell her that I love her every day.

Walt Disney Records is set to release a massive original motion picture soundtrack for their upcoming live-action take on “Pete’s Dragon” next month. The new album features 3 original songs written for the David Lowery film, including the end credit track “Something Wild” by electronic violinist Lindsey Stirling featuring Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness. The soundtrack will also include “Nobody Knows” performed by the Lumineers, plus “The Dragon Song” performed by Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy.

If Brady Corbet‘s The Childhood of a Leader hadn’t received plenty of early praise as a forceful, confident directorial debut from a perpetually interesting young actor, my eye would still be fixed on it for one reason: composer Scott Walker. The press-shy, not-exactly-prolific musician has a fanbase as narrow as it is dedicated — David Bowie may have been first and foremost among them, often considering him a North Star; just hear his reaction to a birthday wish for some idea — and his one contribution to film-scoring, on Leos Carax’s Pola X, is among the best anybody has produced in the last 20 years.
Though a recent convert, I consider myself among said fanbase, and so: whatever I come to make of it, The Childhood of a Leader earns credit for giving us a new, of-the-same-name Scott Walker album on August 19, ahead of which there’s now a very brief preview.

During E3 Marvel unveiled a teaser trailer for a new Spider-Man game that seems to have fans really excited. The game looks awesome, and Spider-Man even got a fresh new look. It sounds like this is only the first in a series of games that Marvel is developing!
During an interview with Polygon, Vice President of Games at Marvel Jay Ong discussed the new Spider-Man PS4 game and teased some big plans and upcoming announcements.
"When I joined Marvel two years ago, I came in with a mandate to usher in a new era for Marvel Games, We have a treasure trove of the best superhero characters on earth. What can we do with this to create truly epic games? Is [Spider-Man] a signal of things to come? Oh, yes. Absolutely. And we can’t wait to tell the world about it."
Ong goes on to talk about their long-term strategy, which is great because Marvel has never really had a decent strategy for their video games. The quality and style of the games have never really been consistent. They range from complete and utter crap to a few decent ones. I've never really been completely blown away by any of the games Marvel has released. Maybe that's all about to change.
"One of the things we really focus on in terms of our new strategy is that we all believe that great games drive the brand and great games are what our fans really deserve. The question is, 'How we can get there?' The thing we landed on is to be really selective with who we partner with. Extremely selective. Right now I would say that out of every 10 opportunities we look at, we maybe do one."
He goes on to talk about the kind of talent they are looking for to develop their games:
"What we look at first and foremost is the talent level of partner. Are they world class in building the games we're talking about? They have to have world-class talent. They have to be able to invest the resources to make that talent sing. Equally important is, do they have passion for the IP they're working on? Do they share the same ambition? Do they love the character? We look for passion, that comes through in the first 30 seconds."One of our mantras is authenticity; it's easy to make a game with Spider-Man on the label, but it's much harder to make it truly authentic in a way that reflects Peter Parker, the character. We are absolutely obsessed about [quality]. That is our North Star. We always say 'Great is not good enough. We're going for truly epic.'"
I like this attitude! It sounds like they actually know what they want this time around and they are going after talented developers who will give them the best quality games possible. It's about time! It's then explained that Marvel will no longer have timed releases to coincide with the release of their movies, which is the smartest thing they could do. I'm surprised they weren't doing that sooner. This will allow the developers to create the kind of quality games they want.
"Things like [games] you cannot under-resource, You can't not give the development time ... to do justice to the game. We think, 'How do we make the game better? How do we help our partners make the game better?'"Building these franchises, and building these characters [at Marvel Games], this is that first big milestone from this team. This is a huge ambitious project."
Hopefully, they follow through with this vision and give fans the "truly epic" games that these characters deserve.

If you are excited by the prospect of a Lonely Island movie, I have good news for you. Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping is a Lonely Island movie in every way, packed with music and jokes. At 90 minutes, it moves fast, and it offers up some laser-sharp satire. If there’s any overall problem with the film, it is that they’ve made a very specific satire of a target that is so ridiculous it almost resists parody. It’s easy to just make the comparison to This Is Spinal Tap, the mockumentary that launched Rob Reiner’s career as a director, but Popstar is a reaction to a very different kind of film than Spinal Tap was. You have to go back and look at films like The Song Remains The Same or The Kids Are Alright to understand what the culture was that Spinal Tap targeted, while modern...

The "coming of age" genre of American movies can vary wildly in terms of subject matter. There are the great teenage "coming-of-age" films (see: John Hughes)- which are more poignant than standard, individual teen angst stories dealing with topics such as "Why doesn't he like me?" or "How do I get rid of my acne and become more popular?" Yet other, far more dramatic "coming of age" films center on the evolution of the United States, none more movingly than those dealing with the abolitionist period of our nation's history. It was a proud time in our history; people of conviction stood up against an abhorrent societal norm in certain areas of the country. Some people went willingly and others were dragged kicking and screaming into a new age of tolerance and growth. Yes, I know, we're still not all growed-up yet but you notice that...

In the penultimate episode of Helix season 2, a main story arc proves as elusive as ever...
This review contains spoilers.
2.12 The Ascendant
When Helix first arrived, it had moments of eeriness that I took as being intentional and stylistic, but the second season has revealed the true nature of these curious moments as exceptionally shallow.
The opening sequence of The Ascendant proves the point exactly, because we already know Peter (now Ely) and Anne are both madder than a box of frogs. So them chopping up dead people with axes and then having blurry shower sex to The Flower duet from the opera Lakmé isn’t remotely weird but actually somewhere between tedious and passé. It’s a sociopathic romance built on zero foundations and some sort of misplaced shock value ethos.
I’d have been more taken aback if two characters spoke some well-constructed dialogue, or a subplot was developed that actually made sense.

Chicago – The Chicago independent film scene keeps thriving, and a local production that just wrapped up will soon be a part of it. “The View From Tall” is based on a play written by co-director Caitlin Parrish, who along with her directing partner Erica Weiss brought the story to the screen.
One of the key roles in the film is portrayed by Chicago actor Michael Patrick Thornton. Thornton is a veteran performer, who most recently appeared as Dr. Gabriel Fife in the ABC-tv series “Private Practice.” Thornton suffered a spinal stroke in 2003, and is now mobile via a wheelchair, but has still forged a full acting career which also included an appearance in “The Dilemma” – directed by Ron Howard – in 2011.

Whoever thought RoboCop, Highlander and Rambo would make suitable kids' cartoons? These folks, that's who...
There are certain eternal questions in life that I doubt we’ll ever find an answer to. Who was Jack The Ripper? What happened on the Mary Celeste? How have there been five Resident Evil movies? And the question we’re going to look at now, why do they make kids' cartoons out of very adult movies?
In some ways it makes sense. As a kid, there are very few moments more exciting than watching an ultra-gory action film or a dodgy sex comedy that you know you’re not supposed to be watching. Everyone knows this, the studios especially. But surely they can’t be that blatant about it? You can’t make a show for kids based on RoboCop! Have you seen RoboCop? Won’t somebody please think of the children?

After taking on roles in thrillers like Dream House and The Bourne Legacy, then a supporting part in the big-budget blockbuster Oz the Great and Powerful, Rachel Weisz is getting back to smaller dramatic fare by joining Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander in the Derek Cianfrance-directed The Light Between Oceans.
The drama, an adaptation of the bestselling novel of the same name by M.L. Stedman, is set on a remote island off the coast of Australia in the years following World War I. It centers on a lighthouse keeper (Fassbender) and his lonely wife (Vikander), who are faced with an unexpected moral conundrum when a small boat containing a dead man and a two-month-old infant washes ashore. When the pair decide to keep the child and raise it as their own, the consequences of that choice are devastating.

Earlier this week I wrote about the whole of DreamWorks Animation, which came after I — no joke — revisited all 28 features released by the studio so far and attended a screening of the studio's latest, "How to Train Your Dragon 2" (hitting theaters next week). That hotly anticipated sequel, which bowed at the Cannes Film Festival last month, comfortably took the top spot, with the 2010 original firmly at #2. Because these, to me, are the crowning achievements of DreamWorks so far. I imagine the campaigns behind such competitors as "The Lego Movie" (Warner Bros.) and the still unseen "Boxtrolls" (Focus Features) would cringe at reading something like what I'm about to write, but I'm going to write it anyway: the Best Animated Feature Film Oscar race seems all but over, and I really have to say, I think "Dragon 2" deserves to be in the Best Picture conversation later this year as well.
