In a new series, Alex talks us through the film roles of the actors who've played the Doctor. First up, William Hartnell and Jon Pertwee...
We know them best as the twelve very different incarnations of the Doctor. But all the actors who've been the star of Doctor Who, being such good all-rounders in the first place, have also had film careers. Admittedly, some CVs are more impressive than others, but this retrospective attempts to pick out some of the many worthwhile films which have starred, featured or seen a fleeting cameo by the actors who would become (or had been) the Doctor.
William Hartnell was, above all else, a film star. He is by far the most prolific film actor of the main twelve to play the Time Lord. With over 70 films to his name, summarising Hartnell's film career is difficult at best.

Director Jonathan Glazer talks about how the film – which stars Scarlett Johansson as an alien driving round Glasgow in a van – came to obsess him
In early 2001, Jonathan Glazer began planning his next film. The director was then 35, a wildly sought-after maker of music videos and adverts who had just released his first film, the singular gangster movie Sexy Beast. His next was to be an adaptation of Michel Faber's cult novel Under the Skin. The project ended up on ice. Work didn't start until 2004.
Ten years later, Under the Skin is finished, and Glazer is in a publicists' office in Soho, a well-preserved Londoner with a thicket of dark hair, tall enough to verge on the looming. Having spent almost all his 40s getting the film made, he must feel like a different man from the one who began it?
"Well. Hmm. I … God. That's a teaser." He stalls.

Some films take niche viewing to a whole new level, and oddly enough, a lot of them involve Stephen Rea. That game may have found its new poster child in Tasting Menu, a complex concoction that is ostensibly about Marc and Rachel’s love affair, but doesn’t seem to want to talk about it in the trailer. Sure, we see Marc and Rachel, but the trailer is for a film that is about the closing of the world’s best restaurant, a place depicted as being as oddly out of anyplace as Adams’ Restaurant at the End of the Universe.
Possibly (given the clues in the trailer) existing everywhere and nowhere, there is apparently a best restaurant in the world, and despite achieving this unique status, it is about to close. A fantastic guest list is obviously on hand for this momentous occasion, and in the mix are Marc and Rachel,...

After bringing hit Chinese films to the Us such as Hero and House of Flying Daggers, director Zhang Yimou is situating himself with an American film at Universal Pictures. THR has word that Yimou is currently in talks to adapt The Parsifal Mosaic, the 1982 novel by Robert Ludlum, the same author behind The Bourne Identity and the sequels that followed. This would be Yimou's first studio film, and he's got Imagine Entertainment duo Brian Grazer and Ron Howard producing with the Ludlum estate's Captivate Entertainment, not to mention a script from Road to Perdition writer David Self too. Read on! Here's the official synopsis of the early 80s spy thriller novel: Michael Havelock’s world died on a moonlit beach on the Costa Brava as he watched his partner and lover, double agent Jenna Karas, efficiently gunned down by his own agency. There’s nothing left for him but to quit the game,...

While 2011’s “The Flowers Of War” starred Christian Bale and had 40% of its dialogue in English, Zhang Yimou has mostly stayed away from the Hollywood machine, preferring to continue working in his native county. Universal, however, seems to have found a way to lure the “Hero” director stateside. Deadline reports that the long-developing Robert Ludlum adaptation “The Parsifal Mosaic” has secured Zhang as its helmer. Originally set as a directorial outing for Ron Howard—he’s instead producing the project with long-time partner Brian Grazer—the film will revolve around a CIA operative who gets back in the game after discovering a lover is still alive despite previously believing her to be a Kgb double agent and witnessing her execution. Here's the Amazon synopsis: Michael Havelock’s world died on a moonlit beach on the Costa Brava as he watched his partner and lover, double agent Jenna Karas, efficiently gunned down by his own agency.

In a landmark move, Universal Pictures have signed award-winning Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou (The Flowers Of War) to direct their planned film adaptation of Robert Ludlum’s The Parsifal Mosaic. According to Deadline, this collaboration will mark the first time a mainland Chinese director has signed on for an English-language film for a Us film studio.
Zhang Yimou – a director, producer, actor, writer and former cinematographer – is no stranger to the concept of blazing a trail. In 1990, his film Ju Dou became the first Chinese movie to be nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award. More recently, he directed both the opening and closing ceremonies for the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games.

This documentary about Michelin-starred restaurant El Bulli doesn't dig deep enough
In some ways, it's a pleasure to see a documentary about a restaurant and a top chef that doesn't use the phoney-baloney word "passionate". This film, by the German director Gereon Wetzel, about the ultra-exclusive Michelin-starred restaurant El Bulli near Roses on the Costa Brava, doesn't go in for this kind of life-affirming schmaltz, but there is something frigid and opaque about it. At the end of every summer season, the restaurant's charismatic boss, Ferran Adrià, closes it down, and key staff retreat for a "research" period in which they will develop new tastes, new textures, new ideas. Adrià is candid about coming up with dishes which go beyond "tasting good". This is where cuisine merges with conceptual art: a new taste combination might trigger new thoughts and feelings, as well as just making us say: "Oooh, yummy." Without any voiceover,...

Title: El Bulli: Cooking in Progress Director: Gereon Wetzel For the first six months of the year, renowned Spanish chef Ferran Adria closes his tiny restaurant elBulli, overlooking Catalonia’s Costa Brava Bay, and works with his culinary team to prepare for the next season. (Or did — the amazing restaurant has now shuttered permanently, set to re-open in 2014 as only a culinary center and institute.) “El Bulli: Cooking in Progress,” a rather elegantly simplistic and hands-off exploration of food as avant-garde art, spotlights this unusual process, and cooks up all sorts of elemental yearnings in the tastebuds of viewers. Adria is one of the undisputed masters of haute cuisine (one of...

Penelope Cruz and her husband, Javier Bardem, brought their baby son, Leo, along last night to get ice cream in Sarajevo. The Bardem-Cruz family arrived in Bosnia last week, so that Penelope would have time to prep for beginning production on her new movie, Venuto al Mondo. She joined director Sergio Castellitto on set yesterday afternoon, and work is expected to continue in the country for the next week and a half. Penelope has been logging long hours before the cameras this Summer, since she was also in Rome to shoot Woody Allen's Bop Decameron. She, nonetheless, fit in a few weeks of fun traveling with her boys. Penelope broke out her swimsuit during a getaway in southern Italy, and she, Javier, and Leo also visited Spain's Costa Brava. So when he appeared in his crisp chef's whites on Monday's episode, it was clear something different was going on. "This is the price I'm paying for being given incredible access to this kitchen and to this man," he said in the voiceover.
The kitchen Bourdain was a guest in belonged to Ferran Adrian, considered one of the world's best chefs at one of the world's best restaurants, El Bulli on Costa Brava in Spain. Bourdain traveled to the restaurant before it closed in July to cook with Adrian, his last chance to do so at El Bulli. The dishes Bourdain assisted with are not the kind of cuisine you're likely to whip up at home.

Eva Longoria and her boyfriend, Eduardo Cruz, were off taking care of individual business yesterday afternoon in La. He logged a few hours at a studio while she was decked out in a blazer to join her Desperate Housewives costars, like Marcia Cross at a promo shoot for their last season. Eva and Eduardo are together again on the West Coast after a fun tour of Europe with his sister, Penelope, and her husband, Javier Bardem. They spent a day sightseeing in Spain's Costa Brava, and it was during that outing we had a first look at little Leo Bardem! Eva's back to work on the last episodes of her small-screen series and also recently taped an appearance for Mario Lopez's show H8R. One project Eva's trying to get off her hands is the Nevada branch of her restaurant, and she may have found a buyer for the Las Vegas outpost of Beso.

Let's be honest – the notion of summer as an extended golden period of rest and re-stimulation really now only applies to the young, the retired, or those in the teaching professions. The rest of us slog on, hoping to catch the odd festival (or maybe just gig in a park), marking time until camping in Cornwall or fly-drive to France, where finally luxuriating in the latest Alan Hollinghurst will come a distant second to stopping the youngest weeing in the hotel pool.

Nestled in a picturesque spot along a bay on Catalonia’s Costa Brava in Spain, the three-star Michelin restaurant El Bulli is home to Ferran Adrià, considered by many colleagues and foodies to be the world’s most innovative chef. He’s a culinary avant-gardist who’s strongly associated with molecular gastronomy, an emerging field that fuses cooking with the rigors of scientific experimentation, bringing tools into play like liquid nitrogen, thermal immersion circulators, and syringes. Those lucky enough to eat at El Bulli are treated to a three-hour, 30-plus-course tasting menu that Adrià and his staff fill with bold ...

Penelope Cruz has taken her baby son for an outing with Eva Longoria. On Monday, July 17, the "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" actress was snapped carrying six-month-old Leo in a baby sling as she walked down a flight of steps followed by the "Desperate Housewives" star.
Vacationing together in Costa Brava, Spain, the two Hollywood actresses were seen all smiles as they were joined by Penelope's husband Javier Bardem and brother Eduardo Cruz, who is currently dating Eva. X17Online, which provided the photo from the outing, reported that they "had a mountain-side lunch on a beautiful spread."
Penelope gave birth to her first son with Javier in late January this year, shortly after Eva was linked romantically to her singer brother. The "Nine" actress has since returned to work. In early July, she joined the filming of new Woody Allen movie, "The Bop Decameron", in Rome.

Michael Winterbottom is one of Britain's most original film-makers - no rehearsals, actors who improvise and subjects that range from lesbian serial killers to torture in Guantanamo. His latest film – with its graphic and prolonged sex and murder scenes – has audiences reeling in horror. What's all the fuss about, he wonders
Is Michael Winterbottom merely in deep denial about what he has done with his new film, The Killer Inside Me, or is it more that, in the course of a long career, some vital part of his film-making soul has become so inured to violence that he is unable to grasp quite how abhorrent parts of his movie are? I'm not sure. You can see why they made Top Gun about jet fighters. This is set entirely within the confines of an Israeli tank during the 1982 Lebanon war, and it's not much of a recruitment ad. The gimmick is both the movie's strength and its weakness. The space and visibility restrictions make this a neat minimalist thriller and a nervy, unpredictable combat experience, but it's one safely insulated from the questions – and victims – of the real-life conflict. Kylie Minogue seemed to be getting on famously with boyfriend Andrés Velencoso Segura's family over the festive period. After the couple jetted into Spain on Christmas Eve to be with his familly, the pint-size popstar spent quality time with his sisters. The three ladies have been spending time together during Kylie's stay with the family of her current beau. Minogue, 41, and the sisters, Sonia and Silvia, were pictured taking a stroll in Tossa del Mar, on the Costa Brava, near Barcelona yesterday. And they appeared to be getting on well, with seemingly no problems in communication between the potential in-laws.

Kylie Minogue and her Spanish model beau, Andres Velencoso, jetted off to Spain for the holiday break after spending family time in Australia. Minogue and Velencoso were spotted at Barcelona airport and then headed straight for the atmospheric town of Tossa de Mar on the Costa Brava where Velencoso's father and sisters reside. Minogue was said to have impressed them earlier in the year by working a shift at the family bar. The pair had been in Melbourne, Kylie's hometown, and attended her grandmother's 90th birthday in the sleepy suburb of Box Hill, where Velencoso had to take a sudden rush trip to the dentist.
