I’m trying to decrease my usage of “good” and “bad” when discussing art. They are lazy shortcuts that distill creativity into the simplest qualitative assessments as if art is worth boiling down to a pure binary outlook. It’s why whenever any movie is widely labeled “good,” I can’t help but approach it with some increased skepticism. Conversely, “bad” movies always pique my interest, and I’m more likely to look deeper for their successful elements than what I find from the consensus.

One month after actor Julian Sands was confirmed dead, the corner report delivered the grisly and unsettling news that the cause of his death cannot be determined.
As per an officer in the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Coroner Department, “The cause is ‘Undetermined’ due to the condition of the body and because no other factors were discovered during the coroner’s investigation, this is common when dealing with cases of this type. This is the final determination.” Such wording only adds to the haunting and tragic scenario, conjuring images that are difficult to shake.
Julian Sands first went missing back in January while he was hiking in the Mount Baldy portion of the San Gabriel Mountains, an area noted for its dangerous conditions, especially in the winter when Sands was first reported missing. This led to several searches and hundreds of volunteer hours which ultimately turned up nothing. In late June,...

About a month ago, the San Bernardino County Sheriffs office confirmed that the human remains had been found in a remote wilderness area by hikers and were, indeed, those of the actor.

The worst has been confirmed by THR: Julian Sands, the unforgettable star of the horror classic Warlock, is dead. The actor vanished in January when hiking in the Mount Baldy wilderness outside of L.A. Recently, hikers found a body, and, as expected, its identity was confirmed as Sands. It’s a sad but not unexpected end for one of the most high-profile missing persons cases in recent years, and hopefully, his remains being identified will give his family peace. It sounds like a tragic accident, with Sands being a renowned outdoorsman and avid hiker. It took this long to find and identify him because, until recently, the area suffered the effects of unusually severe weather.
Of course, Sands is an icon to the horror community thanks to his star role in Warlock and its sequel, Warlock: The Armageddon. He also had roles in many other movies, with him initially...

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said Monday that it continued its search efforts for Julian Sands, the veteran actor who disappeared in January while hiking around Mount Baldy, which lies in the San Gabriel Mountains less than 50 miles northeast of Los Angeles.
Officials said more than 80 search and rescue volunteers, deputies and staff participated in the search that took place Saturday in the nearby wilderness and remote areas across the mountain. The effort included two helicopters and drone crews. Sands, 65, remains missing.
The search had been suspended temporarily after the British actor, an experienced outdoorsman, was reported missing on January 13 because of the extra-severe winter conditions across Western U.S. Since Sands’ disappearance, San Bernardino sheriffs said they have conducted eight searches to find him, along with eight other operations.
“Despite the recent warmer weather, portions of the mountain remain inaccessible due to extreme alpine conditions,” the department said today.

Glenn Danzig is getting anxious for a return to “normal.” A year ago, the heavy-metal singer turned horror filmmaker was editing his new feature, a blood-soaked “vampire spaghetti Western” called Death Rider in the House of Vampires, when the Covid-19 pandemic forced the world into lockdown. Now that the film is complete, and quarantine protocols are loosening up, he’s hoping to get it into theaters within the next couple of months.
“We’ve already got a plan to go to theaters with it around the country,” he says one day in late March.

We must preface this interview by stating this was supposed to be on camera, but thanks to dodgy internet signals, instead we reverted to a phone call, as we spoke to the wise and pensive actor Julian Sands, to mark the release of the controversial drama The Painted Bird.
The film – which provoked mass walk-outs upon its premiere in Venice last year, and at several film festivals since, has picked up notoriety, known by many for its violent, challenging sequences, as it is its masterful artistry. We asked Sands – famed for his roles in movies such as A Room With a View and The Killing Fields – how this made him feel.
“You know, Vaclav [Marhoul, the director] spent 10 years or more making this film,” he began. “For me, I’ve done several other projects in the meantime, and so it’s not quite as viscerally painful to hear about people’s unhappiness about...

Herb Dorfman, former Orion Pictures executive and a home video industry veteran, died Feb. 25 of complications from Parkinson’s disease and dementia. He was 77.
Dorfman served as head of home entertainment for Orion Pictures from 1987 to late 1996. Orion was a prosperous independent studio in those days that turned out a steady stream of box office hits during Dorfman’s tenure, including “Silence of the Lambs,” “Mississippi Burning” and “Dances With Wolves.” Orion was part of a wave of sizable Hollywood independents that thrived along with the home video boom of the 1980s and ’90s.
Dorfman was known for his elaborate marketing campaigns and promotional stunts, such as his attention-getting move to send director Jennifer Lynch out for a promotional press tour for the controversial 1993 drama “Boxing Helena” when it was held up from theatrical release by litigation.
Dorfman left Orion just as the company was sold to MGM in 1996 following a bankruptcy proceeding.

Decades after making it, many of Hollywood’s biggest stars who went broke and hit rock bottom

The former Bond girl was part of an investment group that hoped to turn the town of Braselton, Georgia, into a tourist attraction and a hub for film and television production. The plan ultimately failed and she lost millions. She settled for $3.8 million after filing for bankruptcy.

The Marvel series “Jessica Jones” made a big splash when it premiered in November 2015, proving that character-focused takes on superhero tales had real potential in an episodic context. And the best episode of Season 2, “Aka Three Lives and Counting,” is the one that proves the power of that idea.
[Editor’s note: Spoilers follow for “Marvel’s Jessica Jones” Season 2.]
Thanks to a longer-than-usual gap between seasons, Season 2 of “Jessica Jones” was able to be developed as a whole piece. But it’s not hard to pinpoint the best episode of the 13 that premiered on Thursday. While Episode 7, “Aka I Want Your Cray-Cray,” offers up some fascinating insight into Jessica’s past, it’s really Episode 11, “Aka Three Lives and Counting,” that lingers in the memory.
And no, it’s not just because David Tennant returns.
(But that was nice to see.)

When the first season of “Jessica Jones” premiered nearly two and a half years ago, the Netflix/Marvel universe felt shiny and new, and fans relished the possibilities behind this bold new take on superhero storytelling.
But now in the year 2018, after slogging through a second season of “Daredevil” that felt inessential, “Iron Fist” (no explanation needed), and the ultimately disappointing “The Defenders,” our excitement level for a new Marvel season — even a follow-up to arguably the very best Marvel season produced so far — is a bit waning.
That said — damn, is it good to be hanging out with Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter) again. In Season 2, the P.I. with superpowers remains vulnerable to bullets as well as the consequences of her bad choices. And while the narrative surrounding her takes too long to find cohesion, it still results in a searing, in-depth character study not normally expected from this genre.

Adult Babies gets an exclusive reveal at Horror Channel FrightFest Glasgow 2017, in anticipation of the event, actress / producer Joanne Mitchell – star of Before Dawn and Bait; and creator of Adult Babies – answers 10 scary questions…
When did your fascination for horror films begin?
I’ve been interested in horror since being a young kid. I liked to be frightened, whether it be reading a scary book, or watching one of the Hammer House of Horrors. But it wasn’t until my 30’s that I really became fascinated with the whole genre after making ‘Before Dawn’ and watching back to back movies at FrightFest!! The fans are so loyal and open minded and really know their stuff.
What was the first horror film you saw?
I’m pretty sure it was ‘The Thing’. If I remember rightly my brother and his mates had managed to get a copy and I snuck in!

Filmmaker Jennifer Chambers Lynch (Boxing Helena, Chained) appears to have spun a couple of work-for-hire TV episode jobs into a feature horror movie gig. The director, whose father is Twin Peaks creator David Lynch, has helmed just two episodes of AMC’s The Walking Dead, but those two episodes are undoubtedly among the most affecting and fear-inducing installments of the all-too-often disappointing series. Her work on the fifth season’s “Spend” and the sixth season’s “Jss” so impressed Twd producer Gale Anne Hurd that she decided to tap her for a Halloween-themed film she had in the works, according to Deadline.
“When I saw the level of passion and professionalism Jen brought to The Walking Dead when she directed for us, I knew I had found the right director to helm Hellfest,” Hurd explained. “Her vision for the film is not only compelling and character driven, but very, very...

One of my very favorite horror conventions has always been Flashback Weekend in Chicago, Illinois. For years, I attended Flashback as a fan and for the last six years, it’s been a huge honor for me to head back to serve as one of the convention co-hosts and work with Mike and Mia Kerz, two of the most selfless folks you’ll ever meet working in the industry.
Flashback Weekend will be celebrating its 15th anniversary this August 5th through the 7th and is being held at the Crowne Plaza Chicago O’Hare (5440 N. River Road, Chicago). This year’s schedule is shaping up to be yet another incredible time for midwestern horror fans, and there are still many announcements to come! So far, attendees can look forward to a celebration of the 20th anniversary of Scream, with a cast reunion featuring Neve Campbell, Skeet Ulrich, and Matthew Lillard.

Although relatively scarce, horror movies directed by women are out there. You may have to turn over a few rocks to know who they are and their material might be a little more difficult to get your hands on, but these directors deserve just as much attention and scrutiny as their male counterparts, who have long dominated the genre. The following discusses selections of female directors’ forays into the business of terror. (This post contains spoilers)
Antonia Bird
The late director Antonia Bird’s Ravenous is a bizarre amalgamation of humor and horror that explores cannibalism with warped nuance. The strangely cacophonous score builds up tension as craven outcasts face a glutinous and depraved attacker whose strength seems fortified by his consumption of human flesh. Set during America’s westward expansion, the metaphor of humanity’s insatiable appetite for power is plain to see, but its execution indulges in such...

1. Kim Basinger - Boxing Helena
I may as well start with one of the most infamous cases of an actress dropping out of a film to which they'd apparently agreed.
Director Jennifer Lynch originally had Madonna pegged to take the lead in her debut feature, Boxing Helena. The story of a woman who has her limbs removed and is kept in a box (it's as charming as it sounds), the role was then offered to Kim Basinger when Madonna passed.

Good day, horror fans. The post-Halloween season is rarely a big one for our genre of choice, and theaters are proving that. The biggest thing hitting cinemas this week is David Hayter.s Wolves, with Jason Momoa, which might end up being better than everything else in theaters, but I.m guessing Foxcatcher has it beat. In smaller news, you.ll be able to catch the blink-and-you-missed-it supernatural thriller Jessabelle out on DVD and Blu-ray starting January 13, 2015. Amblin is putting the dark magical thriller Pentacle together with Vertigo Entertainment and Black List screenwriter Ian Fried. Kevin Smith‘s attempt to reinvent or re-brand himself as a genre director began in 2011 with the uninspired and fairly forgettable (aside from Michael Parks) Red State, and now three years later he’s ready to take another stab at a dark and possibly horrific story. But while his last film featured extreme members of the religious right as the villains his latest appears to be focused on someone even nuttier. Tusk is about a man (Michael Parks again) who lures a podcast host (Justin Long) into rural Canada on the pretense of telling a weird and mesmerizing account involving a disaster at sea and the walrus who saved his life. The man is after more than just one night’s companionship though, and the podcaster discovers too late that he’s become a part of the tale… and the tail a part of him. Check out the first trailer for Kevin Smith’s Tusk. There...

FEARnet sat down recently with 1990’s bombshell and prolific actress Sherilyn Fenn on the set of director Hank Braxtan’s creature feature Unnatural to chat about the film, as well as the legacy of ‘Twin Peaks’, the David Lynch-created series and film that rocketed her to stardom, 1998’s erotic feature Two Moon Junction in which she starred, and much more. Read on.
Helmed by Braxtan (who’s upcoming psychological horror feature Chemical Peel is due out via Lionsgate this coming October), Unnatural was produced by Ron Carlson with cinematography by Marc Carter and editing by filmmaker Mike Mendez (Big-Ass Spider), and was shot this past January and February on location in Fairbanks, Alaska. In addition to Fenn, the cast includes James Remar (‘Dexter’), Ray Wise (Jeepers Creepers 2, ‘Twin Peaks’), Graham Greene (The Green Mile), Q’orianka Kilcher (‘Sons of Anarchy’) and Ivana Korab.

Margot Kidder was Lois Lane in Superman, Kim Basinger was Vicki Vale in Batman. But what happened afterwards to their careers, and those of other well-known love interests?
Had been a Hollywood siren since 9 1/2 Weeks in 1986, and cheerfully satirised herself in Wayne's World 2 and Cool World but disaster struck when she pulled out of Boxing Helena, Jennifer Lynch's directorial debut, and had to pay back more than $3m (£1.8m). Her career high point came in 1997 when she won best supporting actress Oscar for La Confidential for, essentially, impersonating Veronica Lake, one of the greatest of all Hollywood sirens. Since then it has all gone a bit flat.
