A young orphan boy, Pedro, comes to stay with Don Mateo, a school teacher from Avila, and his wife, and daughter Martina. The boy feels lost at first, because of his new surroundings. He is soon joined by Alfredo, the son of a Madrid woman who is having an affair and wants the boy away. Alfredo proves to be a great influence in Pedro's life. Alfredo's untimely death leaves a void in Pedro that makes him choose a career as a merchant sea captain because through his friend, he learns to love the ocean.
Years later, Pedro traveling to Mexico, rescues a few people from a damaged yacht and brings them to Veracruz. Jane, one of the saved passengers, sees a kindness in the man that gave her another chance at life. She loves Pedro, but she has a problem, mainly that she wants to be free, something that does not sit well with the man that wants to bring her to Spain. Their romance was not meant to be when Jane dies in a tragedy. Pedro, all alone now, must reflect what to do with his own life. He chooses to follow Don Mateo's footsteps by becoming a teacher.
This Spanish film was shown recently on a cable channel. Directed by the late Luis Alcoriza, a Spaniard that settled in Mexico and was a collaborator of Luis Bunuel. The film is involving during the first part dealing with Pedro's life at school and his encounter with Alfredo, a boy that was going to change his life completely. The adult Pedro is not as interesting as the boy. Mr. Alcoriza showed a reverence for the original material in the way he sets the story. Julio Gutierrez Caba is seen as Don Mateo. Maria Rojo, an exceptional Mexican actress has nothing to do in the film.
