It’s been a stellar year of cinema and pop culture-themed books, and the texts (and Blu-rays) in this round-up all make fine gifts. One additional book that should be on your year-end list is Mark Frost’s Twin Peaks: The Final Dossier. It’s a satisfying companion to season three of Peaks, not to mention Frost’s own Secret History of Twin Peaks. So be sure to check out Nick Newman’s recent interview with the Peaks co-creator.
Live Cinema and Its Techniques by Francis Ford Coppola (Liveright)
The legendary Francis Ford Coppola has spoken of “live cinema” with regularity over the years, specifically with respect to 1981’s One From the Heart. That film, a box office flop now held in some regard, is an essential part of Live Cinema and Its Techniques, a fascinating new book authored by Coppola himself. The lessons from that experience, Coppola says,...

Last week, I gave you guys a few lists from Amazon and Netflix in regards to what they have to offer via their streaming services this fall. As a newbie to Hulu, I only discovered over the weekend that they, too, beyond just being an amazing resource for television programming, offer up a killer selection of genre movies that are free to stream with a standard Hulu membership.
Here’s a look at an assortment of 31 films from Hulu that I think would be great movies to stream this October. I tried to give you guys a wide variety, too, hitting various sub-genres, so hopefully there’s a little bit of something for everyone in this list.
The Faculty
As far as high school horror films go, The Faculty has remained one of my very favorites for years now. Essentially, it’s Robert Rodriguez riffing on The X-Files, and who can resist that?...

Last week, S. Craig Zahler’s Brawl in Cell Block 99 celebrated its Us premiere at the 2017 Fantastic Fest, and it also enjoyed its Los Angeles debut yesterday evening at the 2017 Beyond Fest at the historic Egyptian Theatre. Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to speak with one of Cell Block 99’s co-stars, the legendary Udo Kier, who discussed what drew him into the project initially and his thoughts on collaborating with Zahler.
And because Kier has enjoyed a career that has now spanned over five decades (with well over 200 titles on his résumé), we also asked him about creating memorable characters and his involvement with Dario Argento’s Suspiria, which is enjoying new life amongst fans with Synapse Films' 4K restoration.

All Hollywood stars have to start somewhere, and there are plenty of A-listers with low-budget B-movies in their early histories. A teenage Leonardo DiCaprio made an appearance in Critters 3; Kevin Bacon was a memorable victim in the original Friday The 13th. Then there's Parasite: a bargain-basement sci-fi horror that cheerfully slams together two popular 70s staples: Cronenbergian body horror and George Miller-style post-apocalypse. Oh, and Demi Moore makes her feature film debut as Patricia, who grows lemons.

The Puppet Master horror film franchise has had a long run! Today we have the trailer for the 11th film in the franchise, Puppet Master: Axis Termination, and depending on how you feel about the franchise, this new movie could look good or it could look like a piece of trash.
I actually enjoyed watching the first few movies in the franchise. They were kinda fun, but I stopped watching after Puppet Master III: Toulon's Revenge. It's not that I didn't like watching the films because I did. I enjoyed the campiness of them. I just stopped keeping up with them and now they are up to eleven movies! There's obviously a market for these films.
Puppet Master: Axis Termination looks exactly like what I would expect from the film. Here's the synopsis:

Horror seems to be making a comeback with a new wave of films now receiving both critical acclaim, as well as financial success at the box office. Just by attaching the names of writer/director James Wan or Production Company Blumhouse, seems to have enough momentum to make it a box office hit. So with the public now paying to get scared again, here are the top five horror films worth looking out for in 2017.
Death House (Release Date: Tbc)
x
With jump scare film franchises like The Conjuring (2013-2016) and Insidious (2010 -2018) dominating at the box office, it will take something special to change the trend, but that is something Death House is looking to initiate.
Based on an original concept by Gunnar Hansen to bring the icons of horror together the cast reflects his vision perfectly; and for any icons not featured in the original, 5 sequels are already planned for the franchise.

Long live Michael Laughlin. Two years after he released one of my favorite early ‘80s oddities, Strange Behavior (I wrote about it here), he was back to unleash the next chapter in a proposed ‘Strange’ trilogy, Strange Invaders (1983). And while the former is a tribute to Mad Scientist films of the ‘50s via an updated Slasher take, the latter tips its fedora to the great Alien Invasion films of the same era. It may not reach the same dizzyingly weird heights, but Strange Invaders is an affectionate romp that captures the feel of those bygone drive-in classics and solidifies Laughlin’s unique voice.
A co-production between Emi Films and Lone Wolf McQuade Associates, Strange Invaders was released by Orion Pictures in mid September stateside to positive reviews and lackluster box office. Returning only a quarter of its $5 million plus budget, this was the Way of the Laughlin – everyone liked his movies,...

Scarlett Johansson plays The Major in Ghost in the Shell from Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Pictures in theaters March 31, 2017. © 2016 Paramount Pictures. All Rights Reserved.
If you are going to re-make a classic, fan favorite film, you might want to keep the original story. Oddly, the live action remake of the anime classic Ghost In The Shell, based on the Japanese manga of the same name, recreates several scenes, sometimes shot-for-shot and keeps some of the same characters. But the American live-action version ditches the mystery, the atmospheric moodiness, and the philosophical aspects in favor of a standard, less-interesting action film story line. That is a lot of changes, without even getting into the controversy of a largely non-Asian lead cast in this manga-inspired story set in futuristic Japan.

We didn’t see much of him on screens last year, but Oscar Isaac has been quite busy. This year, we’ll see him in the next Star Wars film, along with the George Clooney-directed Suburbicon, as well as alongside Christian Bale in The Promise next month, not to mention next year in Alex Garland’s Annihilation next year. He’s now found his next role, according to Deadline.
The Inside Llewyn Davis star is set to lead the WWII drama Operation Finale, which will be directed by Chris Weitz (About a Boy, The Twilight Saga: New Moon). Described as a drama akin to Argo and Munich, it will follow his character as an Israeli spy named Peter Malkin, who hunts down the Nazi general Adolf Eichmann, as scripted by Matthew Orton. Production is expected to begin this fall in Argentina, so we could see it by next year.

The twelfth (!) installment of the “Puppet Master” series, “Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich,” is set to start filming in Dallas next week, and an interesting cast has been revealed. The franchise, which has never previously featured notable acting talent, is bringing an interesting roster to the production: Thomas Lennon, Udo Kier, Jenny Pellicer, Nelson Franklin, Charlyne Yi, Alex Beh, Barbara Crampton, Tina Parker, Skeeta Jenkins, and Michael Pare are all set to tango with the devious dolls, Variety reports.

As fans of marionette-based murder are well aware, we’re now 12 movies deep on the Puppet Master series, the long-running B-movie franchise that started with a direct-to-video installment in 1989, and has since descended into an endless succession of demonic sequels and Nazi-fighting prequels that still somehow managed to scare us pretty badly when we were kids. (The leech-spitting lady puppet probably didn’t help.) Due in part to their typically abysmal budget (and the fact that the knife-wielding murder puppets are the real stars of the show), you don’t usually think of things like “actors I’ve heard of before” when it comes to the cast of a Puppet Master movie; this is a franchise where Corey Feldman—from 2004’s crossover Puppet Master vs Demonic Toys—is a big-name get.
So it’s kind of crazy to see Variety report on the casting of the 13th ...

Ghost in the Shell is now only three weeks away from its theatrical release, and the promos continue to pour online. The latest two – one featurette, one blink-and-you’ll-miss-it TV spot – are designed to shed some light on Scarlett Johansson’s ass-kicking Major as she sets off on a journey to discover the truth behind her missing identity.
Engineered to be the flagship product of Hanka Robotics, Johansson’s one-of-a-kind cyborg is deployed onto the streets of neo-Tokyo with one goal in mind: to stamp out any and all terrorism before it bubbles to the surface. Doing so will force The Major on a one-way collision course with Kuze, the chief antagonist of Paramount’s Ghost in the Shell movie.
Borrowing elements from the iconic Puppet Master, director Rupert Sanders has revealed in the past that Kuze is something of an evil amalgamation, one which seeds inspiration from a handful...

Paramount has released 8 new motion posters today for the hotly anticipated live action version of Ghost In The Shell. The anime adaptation, due for release March 31st, has been gradually gaining buzz following its impressive Super Bowl teaser trailer and with just over a month to go until it debuts, excitement is, understandably, quite high.
The new motion posters feature Scarlett Johansson’s Major Motoko Kusanagi, the first “full body prosthesis” cybernetic human, and the seven members of her elite Section 9 special ops team, played by Takeshi Kitano, Danusia Samal, Pilou Asbaek, Yutaka Izumihara, Lasarus Ratuere, Tawanda Manyimo and Chin Han.
The film, which appears to closely hew to the 1995 anime original, follows Major and Section 9 has they hunt for an enigmatic hacker known as the Puppet Master. A cut above most anime, Ghost In The Shell takes an imaginative and intelligent look at identity in an increasingly technologically advanced society.

Stars: Lily-Rose Depp, Harley Quinn Smith, Johnny Depp. Justin Long, Austin Butler, Adam Brody, Ralph Garman, Tony Hale, Natasha Lyonne, Haley Joel Osment, Vanessa Paradis, Tyler Posey, Génesis Rodríguez, Jennifer Schwalbach, Sasheer Zamata | Written and Directed by Kevin Smith
So, Kevin Smith… A man whose work I’ve really enjoyed over the years (Clerks 2 and Dogma being my personal highlights, though I used to live for Mallrats), took a, let’s say, interesting path with his recent directorial efforts Red State and Tusk. Exploring the horror genre rather than the comedy/drama he became known for, Smith looks to have a new-found passion for filmmaking, seemingly no longer going through the motions with his View Askewniverse – though he has just announced another Jay and Silent Bob flick!
Instead Smith announced the development of a “True North” trilogy: strange genre tales set in Canada, a country that – like Smith – I have an affinity for.

A new teaser for the upcoming “Ghost in the Shell” trailer that will debut during Super Bowl Li features Scarlett Johansson tearing across a futuristic city guns blazing. Based on the iconic anime series of the same name, the film follows the Major (Johansson), a cyborg working for the counterterrorist organization Section 9. Her unit is tasked to bring down the Puppet Master, a sentient virus program that has the ability to “ghost hack” into cyborgs and take over their bodies, hence the title of the film. The film adaption, directed by Rupert Sanders (“Snow White and the Huntsman”), came under...

Barbara Crampton has been a mainstay in the horror community for more than thirty years, but she’d rather not be called a “Scream Queen.” In a recent essay, Crampton explained that for her, the term is reductive and dismisses the nuances and hard work that go into her roles. I can understand if she wants her legacy to carry more complexity than a catchy nickname, especially considering the wide range of roles that Crampton has contributed to the horror genre. In the past, she played a medical student hounded by reanimated corpses in Re-Animator, and more recently, she portrayed a grieving mother haunted by her past (as well as actual ghosts) in We Are Still Here, as well as the sinister host of a VHS board game in Beyond the Gates.

Major Motoko Kusanagi is not to be trifled with. For more than 20 years, Masamune Shirow’s kick-ass heroine has been a fixture of the Japanese anime scene, during which time the Ghost in the Shell manga ostensibly became a household name through a series of comics, books, video games and even animated feature films.
But in 2017, Paramount and director Rupert Sanders will be taking that lore and blowing it out onto a blockbuster scale with their planned live-action movie. In it, Scarlett Johansson takes point as the Major, a fiercely intelligent cybernetic human capable of leading the elite task force known as Section 9. She’s a force of nature, essentially, and a new international trailer released today gives us a fresh look at Johansson’s cyborg leaping into action in every sense of the word.

In March of 2017, the world wil finally see the live-action version of the classic anime film “Ghost in the Shell,” starring Scarlett Johansson as The Major alongside Pilou Asbæk (“Borgen”), Takeshi Kitano (“Battle Royale”) and Juliette Binoche (“The English Patient”). Johansson’s casting has received quite a bit of backlash for its alleged whitewashing of Asian identity, shrouding the film in controversy since earlier this year. For those eager to see the original vision on the big screen, Mamoru Oshii’s “Ghost in the Shell” will return to UK theaters this January for one night only. Watch a trailer for the release below.

Pitched somewhere between a mournful chant and a military march of drums, Kenji Kawai’s soundtrack for 1995’s Ghost In The Shell cast an unforgettably eerie pall over the entire movie. The makers of the new, live-action take on Ghost In The Shell clearly recognise the power of Kawai’s music because, as the lights go down on the movie’s Tokyo unveiling event, the composer and musician himself is here to thrash out a live version of his score.

Adapting a property as respected and acclaimed as Ghost In The Shell must be something of a double-edged sword. On one hand, you have all the startling imagery and rich ideas of the original cyberpunk manga and anime to fall back on; but then again, whatever you create is going to be compared closely to the original.

Over the weekend, Paramount finally blew the lid off their highly anticipated Ghost in the Shell adaptation, which is arriving in March. After a few tantalizing teasers, the studio dropped the first full trailer during a fan event in Japan and sent the internet into a frenzy. So far, the general consensus seems to be positive and anticipation is certainly high for Rupert Sanders’ film.
One thing that many people are curious about though is the villain. While fans expected it to be Puppet Master, it’s actually going to be Hideo Kuze. In the manga, Kuze is a childhood friend of Motoko’s who she convinced to undergo the cyber-conversion procedure. As is clear from the trailer, he didn’t take to it – believing it robbed him of his humanity – and sets about destroying everyone with a so-called cyberbrain.

There’s a matter of factness to Ghost In The Shell that is perfectly chilling. If our souls are programs within machines, then it follows that those programs can be hacked. If they can be hacked, they can be controlled, shut down or corrupted.
Based on the hit manga by Masamune Shirow, and adapted as an anime feature in 1995 by director Mamoru Oshii, Ghost In The Shell is an influential genre classic. Sporadically violent but also unusually meditative, Oshii’s film ranks alongside Akira and the work of the late Satoshi Kon as some of the most intelligent sci-fi storytelling to emerge from Japan.
