Good show
Catherine_Grace_Zeh27 August 2008
I used to watch this show when I was a growing up. When I think about it, I remember it pretty well. If you ask me, it was a good show. However, the opening sequence and theme song are two things I remember very well. In addition to that, everyone was ideally cast. Also, the writing was very strong. The performances were top-grade, too. I hope some network brings it back so I can see every episode. Before I wrap this up, I'd like to say that I'll always remember this show in my memory forever, even though I don't think I've seen every episode. Now, in conclusion, if some network ever brings it back, I hope that you catch it one day before it goes off the air for good.

Just as funny as the comics!
OllieSuave-00718 November 2016
Garfield and Friends is a cartoon show that is just as funny as the comics. My brother was a huge fun of the show and he actually got me into watching a few episodes as well. It consists of stories about the food-loving cat Garfield the cat, the clueless dog Odie and their frustrated, geeky owner Jon. They get into lots of misadventures - funny as heck, and will send the laughs pile on.

The show also follows Orson the Pig and his adventures with fellow his fellow farm animals. The stories of Orson follows the Garfield stories.

A very nice cartoon that is great for the kids!

Glowing Reviews for Garfield
view_and_review18 November 2021
If there was one thing I didn't like about Garfield was how he treated Odie. That was wrong, Odie didn't deserve that. But other than that, Garfield was my man... or I should say "my cat."

The Jim Davis comic strip was fantastic and it translated very well to screen. I also like the "Friends" part of the show. If memory serves me correctly the extra part of the cartoon, which was a separate cartoon, was "Animal Farm" about a pig and other animals on a farm.

I Loved This Show!
Ginger8730 August 2004
"Garfield and Friends" was a really good show. I started watching it Saturday mornings with my sister in 1990 when I was 3 years old. I loved it. My favorite character was Odie, he was so cute. My sister's favorite character was Garfield, he was funny and clever. I liked both the "Garfield" and "U.S. Acres" part of the show.

My favorite "Garfield" episodes were: "Good Cat, Bad Cat", " Garfield Goes Hawaiian", and "Ode to Odie". Those episodes were classics. My favorite "U.S. Acres" episode (I can't remember the title of it) was about one character following a rainbow which led to a game show with prizes. That episode was really funny.

I think everyone should watch this show because it is a classic. I give this show 9/10 stars.

Garfield-friends

I loved this show as a kid in the 90s. I must say I was a big Garfield fan, probably the reason I love lasagna. Just like ninja turtles are the reason I love pizza lol. I always turned it off when the "friends" came on they were just plain annoying and not interesting really. Watching this was like reading the comics for the most part minus the friends. It's a shame hand drawn animation has gone the way of the dodo.

Fun and laughter for all ages!
Beta_Gallinger10 November 2009
After the "Garfield" comic strip had been appearing in newspapers for ten years and several TV specials based on the strip had been made, Jim Davis' popular cartoon character finally got his own TV series, a Saturday morning cartoon. Unlike some of those cartoons, this one ran for many years. It was one of the shows I used to watch in my childhood, as I was a big Garfield fan at the time. Early in 2005, after I hadn't seen any episodes of the show for a long time and had since gone through adolescenthood, I purchased the Volume 2 DVD set, and really liked what I saw, making it clear that the show isn't strictly for kids. Since then, I've watched all the episodes on all five volumes of the DVD release, which hasn't changed my mind about the show.

Each episode is divided into three different segments (other than the quickies). The first and third segments always feature Garfield, the lazy, overweight, bitter, sarcastic, cynical feline from the strip. He lives in a suburban house with his owner, a dimwitted, clumsy cartoonist who is terrible with women, and a good-natured but not so bright dog named Odie. Garfield loves to eat, sleep, give Jon and Odie a hard time, watch TV, attack the mailman, etc. He has annoyances in his life, such as Odie licking him, Nermal, a kitten who is generally adored by people and gets on Garfield's nerves during his unexpected visits, and Binky the Clown, a goofy clown who appears on TV. Although Garfield is happy with his lazy lifestyle and doesn't like to leave the house much, he often finds himself on adventures, and it's often up to him to solve problems.

The second full segment of each episode is based on Jim Davis' short-lived, lesser known comic strip, "U.S. Acres" (a.k.a. "Orson's Farm"). This cartoon involves a group of anthropomorphic animals living on a farm together. The leader is a pig named Orson, a bibliophile who can get carried away with his imagination, but can also do some good with it. Other characters include: Roy Rooster, an obnoxious rooster who loves to play tricks on the other animals; Wade Duck, a cowardly duck who is afraid of just about everything and often runs in terror; Bo Sheep, a surfer dude sheep; Lanolin Sheep, Bo's loud-mouthed sister who loves to disagree with him; Booker, an adventurous chick who likes to try and catch worms, but they always outsmart him; and Sheldon, Booker's brother, who is still in his egg shell, with only his feet sticking out so he can walk. The farm often gets intruders, most notably the Weasel, who tries to steal the chickens and eat them, and Mort, Gort, and Wart, Orson's mean brothers (all bigger than him), who like to come to the farm to try and steal the vegetable harvest!

I don't recall seeing most of the episodes of this long-running show on TV during my childhood, but do remember some of the episodes I've recently revisited on DVD, and it seems they're mostly still entertaining. This includes the episode where Jon gets in trouble with the police for paying in cash instead of using a credit card, which I find funnier now than I used to! There are many episodes I didn't see as a kid which have cracked me up in recent years, with Garfield (often Jon and Odie as well) in some bizarre situations and meeting crazy characters, Jon pathetically trying to impress his date, among other things. Many fans clearly consider the "U.S. Acres/Orson's Farm" segments far inferior to the "Garfield" ones, but I disagree. I tend to find those very entertaining as well, with some of Orson's fantasies (sometimes a problem for the others on the farm), Roy's pranks, etc. My favourite character in these cartoons is the cowardly Wade Duck, who makes me laugh so hard, though the other characters can be really funny as well!

Sadly, Lorenzo Music, who gave Garfield his famous distinctive voice, passed away in 2001 from bone and lung cancer at age 64. Howard Morris, who provided the voice of Wade Duck (a voice which definitely fit the character), lived to be much older than Music, but died in 2005. I think this is a good time for me to say R.I.P. to both of them. Even though this show ended fifteen years ago, it's still memorable with a lot to like. Not all the episodes are that great (which is probably the case with any long-running show), and I don't find most of the things Garfield says at the end of the intro very funny, but overall, it's a great family cartoon show! It can obviously appeal to a lot of kids, and there are also things for adults to appreciate, including some clever satire that kids might not pick up. Forget the recent CGI Garfield, if you want good family entertainment for all ages, "Garfield and Friends" could be it!

Out of the blue...
Quinoa198412 December 2003
Out of the blue this week I found an old tape of Garfield episodes I recorded back when the show played on Nickelodeon. I remembered how much I loved the show back in my childhood (I stopped watching around 12 or 13 due to school), and I watched it all the way through one night. Not only was I not disappointed after all these years, but in some episodes I laughed more than I did when I was a kid. Like The Simpsons and Ren and Stimpy, Garfield and Friends was a cartoon that could appeal to older kids and (some) adults due to its brand of cynicism and sarcasm, and still contained a wholesome, like-able quality for children of all ages. While I wasn't so much a fan of the US Acres shorts (though a few characters, like Sheldon and the duck with the inflatable tube, were always dependable), nearly every one of the old shorts I viewed on the tape were surprisingly good. I'm not too sure if the upcoming film adaptation will do justice to this or to the smart, original comics by Jim Davis, however this series proves that Garfield- brought to life by the recognizable voice of Lorenzo Music- was one of the more accessible cartoons of the late 80's and early to mid 90's. Great series from my childhood
Rectangular_businessman22 January 2012
Warning: Spoilers
This is such an underrated series. I know that many modern viewers dislike Garfield due the two horrible live-action movies that were made based on the character, but those movies didn't made any justice to the characters created by Jim Davis.

If you are looking for a good adaptation of the "Garfield" comic strip, then you should watch this cartoon, which not only captured the essence of the original comic strip, even improving it adding lots of satirical elements, the same that were present in many cartoons that came later, such as "The Simpsons" or "Family Guy": Even when this was a show for kids, it was brilliantly written, having many interesting criticism to modern society, cinema, television, and even some elements of meta-humor

"Garfield and Friends" was ahead of its time, being one of the best (and one of the most underrated, too) animated series ever made. Personally, I think that without this cartoons, we won't have many of those satirical cartoons aimed to adults. In many aspects, this series was much better than the comic strip in which it was inspired.

A cartoon classic for everyone!
TheLittleSongbird28 January 2010
"Garfield and Friends" is a great show, based on a great comic strip. I just loved how funny, creative and original it was. If I had a disappointment though, and this has been mentioned by many other reviewers, I didn't think the "US Acres" (or "Orson's Farm") segments were as witty or as fun. But there were some fun characters, Wade the Duck was my favourite, and there have been some good moments. But everything else is first rate. The cartoon animation is wonderful, really nice to look at and very colourful. The theme tune is wonderful, and hummable even after a long time. And I love the characters, the lazy Garfield, adorable mischievous Oadie, narcissistic Nermal and goofy Binky The Clown. And the voice work was superb, Lorenzo Music(R.I.P) owned the character of Garfield and part of the reason why I love the show so much. The scripts are dry and witty, full of hilarious asides uttered by Garfield mostly, and the story lines are a lot of fun. In conclusion, this is a great cartoon classic, with something for everyone! 9/10 Bethany Cox

I didn't like it
kikiboo_829 May 2022
It's boring, it's not funny. I don't find any characters to be interesting, funny or lovable. It's pretty lame. I also didn't like the way Garfield never opens his mouth, even when he's supposed to be saying something. The voices are flat, dull and uncompelling.

A true classic
macratzenberger24 October 2016
Travel back in time to the days when Garfield was genuinely funny. When Ronald Regan's presidency was in its finest hours. This makes me wish I lived then. The comedy was funny I listen to the Buddy bears theme 24/7 Binky just makes me hyper. Lorenzo Music acted well. Everything was just right. Not generic, not cliché. Just right. The voice acting is great. The music is great. The cartoon artwork is great. Garfield and Friends is without a doubt a great show and is completely pure. No doubt in my mind. This show never fells to entertain. This is everything ALL tie in shows at the time should have been. A valiant effort to capture the spirit of the source material. No idiots, no bad plots. Everything was near perfect. Combating certain modern shows in that field.

Garfield and his crazy adventures
thegreenbiker10 July 2005
This cartoon is one of my favorites. Not only because of the smart, hungry, talking cat but because of the wide array of secondary characters. I love the fact that it practically parallels the comic. I don't really know how Orson's Farm came about, but i really don't care because it is funny. The good thing about Garfield is that not only is it a great kids show because it ends with a moral or value being taught but it is also ideal for teens due to the fact that his comics are what we grew up with. I love Garfield because he is a teen icon. He eats when he wants, sleeps when he wants and if anybody gives him lip about it he'll let you know.

Cat Antics
hellraiser727 April 2018
This show is another one of my favorite animated shows of all time, it's also one of my favorite skit comedy shows number 9 in my book. Ok, it's not exactly a skit comedy but since each of the comedy segments on each episode are short it kind of counts. The animation I think is great I wouldn't want it any other way as it's true to the comic strip series. Even the music is good, I mainly like the second theme song to the show I thought was a lot of fun, catchy, and just had lots of energy which fits the show because it really is an energetic skit show. The voice acting is great each actor fits like a glove in their roles. Jon is a fun straight man as he is constantly given grief from both his cat and life. But he's insecure and not always a guy that wins in life though he does try, most notably his love life in which he never has a relationship that sticks either by circumstances or his own foil. He's also not always the brightest bulb despite trying to improve on his life he inadvertently makes a mess of it when he sometimes lets himself get suckered into a bunch of Self Help programs which are all really scams.

Lorenzo Music one of my favorite voice actors of all time is excellent as Garfield. This is my second favorite role from Lorenzo, he is Garfield, every time I read the strips I keep thinking about his voice. Garfield as usual is pretty much the definition of laziness as he really doesn't want to do much of anything with his day except eat, sleep, and watch TV. I can't help feeling when you look at the character real closely there is a very tiny part of him in ourselves, whenever we get out of a stressful day I know that's most of the time what I want to do. However, what I like about him is deep down that big lazy exterior he really does have a big heart if not a heart of gold; he's doesn't always think about himself he does care for others may 'be more so and really does come though when he must, because no one else well.

But what makes him enduring is in his dead pan humor; this guy just like his stomach is just full of dry sarcasm, wit, puns and quotes. At the time when I was a kid I wasn't into verbal humor but more physical and visual comedy, which this show does have. This show was a great start in getting me into it because just like the comic strip series verbal humor is where it truly excels. The show also has a bit of a replaybility factor as there are so many verbal jokes it would take more than one watch to uncover.

And of course really like Garfield's back and forth with his fellow dog Odie whom is a cute mutt that isn't a bright bulb but sometimes can be a voice or non-verbal voice of sensuality when there are moments he points out certain things to Garfield that Garfield isn't aware of or doesn't acknowledge; let alone really is a good number two for him as he does sometimes help get him out of certain jams.

His back and forth with Jon is also great as he or both give each other a lot of grief sometimes inadvertently cause problems in each other's lives much like adding gasoline and oil to a bonfire. But Garfield really is a good friend to Jon, as he does get him out of jams but is also a voice of common sense and reason from the things Jon gets himself into. Really like Garfield reactions at those times where you most of the time see him roll his eyes or even have that look of "how could you be this dumb" it's much like any of us whom have had friends where we see and know they've made a dumb choice.

And of course, the comedy segments are just great each is also something different. Just like in the comic their short and are what they set out to do to be fun and funny; but also, smart but in a good way. There are a lot of memorable segments, I'll just say three of my favorites. "Super Sonic Seymour" this to me is where Jon I feel is at his best, just seeing him doing so many things in one day is funny and exhausting just watching him. But the highlight it because the voice actor playing Seymour is the same guy that does the Micro Machine commercials, listening to his voice is music to my ears.

"Invasion of the Big Robots" this episode really blew me away, I honestly didn't expect it to happen. I just thought it was a cool idea having Garfield inadvertently crossing over to another cartoon show and this was before cross overs became a common concept from the comic books like "Power Rangers and Justice League" to TV shows like "The Defenders". But anyway, it is just hilarious seeing how Garfield reacts in what looks like a Transformer's like cartoon; just seeing this episode makes me wonder what would happen if Garfield crossed over with the anime "Sailor Moon" I'd watch that.

Though my favorite segment is "No Monday's" it is just hilarious from beginning to end because of its absurdity how one lost day of the week can screw up anyone day (seriously no one ever heard of rescheduling); this could have made a good fantasy comedy movie, would of love to see how many more problems this would cause. And this episode has one of my favorite quotes from the show, "RASINS, AHHHHH!"

Garfield is Catastic.

Very Good
ianheath-909-9444564 July 2018
Garfield and Friends was a great cartoon. Because they went back and forth between the two sets of characters in the farm location and Jon's house, it never had a chance to get boring. Just a bunch of very fun short stories. Great voice work and characters.

Not as Good as the Comic Strip!
ian-121115 December 2008
I liked (not loved) this cartoon when I saw this on Children's ITV back in the early 90's. I adore the comic strip thought, the wit and purity of the comic strip still appeals to everyone to this day and even going into 2009, Garfield still proves he is going to be very popular (just check out Borders for calenders!). The animation of the strip has also improved. Garfield looks cleaner and a lot more believable and Odie is now playing more of a part in the comic strip than he used to (but the days when Jon is not going around searching for a date anymore since Liz actually love him now but at least he's finally happy!). Mealtime jokes for now on! Anyways, about this cartoon, is was good for watching something to come home from school for, but there was something about that never gelled! There was a lot of comic strips turn T.V. cartoon back in the day like Snoopy, Hagar and Heathcliff, so I guess this was only really being a money-spinner. First off, why is the animation in the Garfield sketches cruder than the Orson's Farm ones? It's weird! Where they trying to develop styles or something? Because I find this really strange. I really didn't like the Orson's Farm segments. They were boring and not funny. The appealed to a CbeeBies audience than anyone else. And another that bothers me is Garfield's dry wit. He is just a one joke character who does nothing more than fools his foolish owner Jon, eat the house out and humiliate the dog while making sarcastic side remarks! The animation was not up to standards either and the voices grated quickly. And where was Odie for most of the episodes? Mind you, the Garfield stories were good fun, if they were original enough. I did like this when it first came out but I lost interest as this went on, especially when it change the theme tune and became more like trying to compete with Tiny Toons or Animanics!

My final words: If you are looking for a good cartoon on a Friday afternoon and there is nothing on the other side, than this will do. But if you want to capture the pure wit and charm of Garfield in all his flavour, you're better off reading the newspaper each day!

The best cartoon adaptation of a comic in this world!
MilkTheCouch24 June 2013
I first heard of this show in 2007, when it aired on Boomerang, a few weeks before it got canned. The first episode I ever saw was "China Cat/Cock-A-Doodle-Dandy/Beach Blanket Bonzo", and the only other one I saw was "Peace and Quiet/Wanted: Wade/Garfield Goes Hawaiian". One day, we got a coupon in a Laptop Meal at KFC for a discount on the Behind The Scenes DVD, so me and my sister got that DVD and were obsessed with the show. But once I was addicted into Pokemon, I rarely watched the show. That was until April 2012, when I decided to look on a website about television and saw the Season 7 opening theme linked to on a page. That night, I watched some Garfield segments. A month after that, I discovered U.S. Acres after seeing a 5-second clip of it attached to a commercial break, and thought it looked cute. I was right-the segment turned out to be better than Garfield! Which brings me to my review: The Garfield segments are based on the comic strip by Jim Davis about a very peculiar cat who doesn't act like other cats. He eats human food like lasagna, he sleeps a lot, he is fat, he doesn't chase mice, he hates spiders and dogs, and we're able to hear his thoughts. He goes on many misadventures, like visiting a little girl's mansion, asking viewers to find mistakes in his cartoon, meeting a copy of himself, celebrating holidays, and re-telling classic stories. U.S. Acres is about a pig named Orson who loves to read, and his wacky friends. They vary from a duck who is afraid of nearly everything named Wade, a "prankster-gangster" rooster named Roy, an egg with feet named Sheldon, a grumpy female sheep named Lanolin, a "cool dude" sheep named Bo, a baby chick named Booker, 3 evil pigs who are his brothers, a weasel who wants to steal chickens, a duck with buck-teeth named Fred, a chick girl named Chloe and my favorite character, a pig named Aloysius who is voiced by the famous comedian Kevin Meaney who works for The Network. They go on many misadventures too, but they mostly teach lessons, like not breaking the law and to not make fun of other people, and re-do stories, like Snow White, Cinderella, The Count Of Monte Cristo, and even classic nursery rhymes! This cartoon will make you laugh, and it's one of the best out there!

The Best Cartoon of the Time from Jim Davis
CSGarfield23 February 2005
I definitely remember this cartoon as one of the bests out there along with the Pink Panther. I mean, who could forget those episodes? There was one where Garfield, Jon, and Odie go out to get a car from the high-bargaining, high-convincing salesman Mr. Swindler (It's getting tougher and tougher to make an honest dollar). There was also the one where Garfield wakes up on the wrong cartoon with a He-man/Transformers atmosphere (See them to find out what Gafield does). Otherwise, Garfield is just another world's laziest cat.

There's also the U.S. Acres (Orson's Farm) segments, based on another strip by Jim Davis preferably for young children (which explains why it aims toward a younger audience). They were great as well, and I liked all the characters (especially Bo and Roy). It was yet another masterpiece in there. And to conclude, there would be a Garfield Quickie based on the comic strips Jim Davis made. I also heard of hidden, or unsyndicated, episodes that never seemed to air on television (but they might appear on the videos/DVDs) All in all, this is most definitely the best cartoon show ever made! Unlike all that violent and vulgar cartoons they're crowding up with nowadays, especially anime, or Japanese animation shows

Still this is my favorite one of cartoons shows in all!!! See if you can find it!

A kids' cartoon worth revisiting
soymilk16 April 2005
At one point when I was very young, 'Garfield and Friends' was one of the after-school cartoons I always looked forward to being able to watch the most – every Thursday I would eagerly await getting home and tuning in to the sardonic ginger-tabby and his various musings on life. I LOVED the initial theme song, 'Friends are There' (in fact I can still remember how frustrated I was when they converted to the painfully catchy 'Get Ready to Party' opener – ugh!), and the escapades that the overweight kitty got himself into always held my interest from beginning to end. Even when production stopped and the show left the air, and when I grew up and lost my enthusiasm for after-school TV (though I'll always have a soft spot for cartoons deep down, and this show is one of the key reasons why), a whole load of the stories, the characters and of course the theme music stayed with me through the years. I was delighted, a couple of years or so ago, to find a satellite channel that broadcast repeats of 'Garfield and Friends', and decided to watch them chiefly for the childhood memories. It came as quite a pleasant surprise, therefore, to discover just how well 'Garfield' now stood up to even my cynical young adult mind. The writing here could be so smart and dry that I found myself smiling at lines which meant nothing to me at that age. Back then, I just loved it for the visual humour and the easy-to-follow narratives, but really there were so many layers to this show all along that I had to wait to be able to value.

There was one mild disappointment that I probably should try and get out of the way as quickly as possible, and that's that the lesser known Jim Davis cartoon that accompanied it, 'US Acres' (or, as it was titled here in the UK, 'Orson's Farm') proved exactly the opposite – that is, it doesn't impress me nearly as much now as it did when I was six or so. I feel like I'm echoing pretty much everyone else here in saying it – that they were good for non-discerning kids who wouldn't mind the preachy morals or grating musical numbers that turned up in *every single damn episode*. Older viewers, on the other hand, might want to use the 'US Acres' segments as time to step out into the kitchen and fix themselves a cup of coffee before the next 'Garfield' one starts. That in mind, the inspired opening credits sequence, in which Garfield battles it out with Orson and his farmyard cronies for screen dominance, just about manages to justify them.

Back to the truly great stuff – the 'Garfield' segments. There are so many glowing things to be said about those cartoons. Lorenzo Music's voice-work was fabulous. The anti-heroic characters were all wonderful, and so unlike any you could find in other kids' cartoons at the time – as well as our sarcastic, self-serving lead, we also had the hapless social misfit Jon Arbuckle, the mindless, relentlessly cheerful yellow canine Odie, and Nermal, a narcissistic little kitten who values his natural cuteness above everything else in life (and yes, he IS officially a male, no matter how feminine his voice-over sounded – that's something which always confused me as a kid). Another thing to be admired about 'Garfield' was just how brave and risk-taking it was for a cartoon that came after 'the Flinstones' but just before 'the Simpsons' – in between the great success that those two shows each enjoyed, animation had been widely regarded as exclusively juvenile stuff of no importance other than to keep the younger members of the family quiet for half an hour. Such disregard did little to dampen Garfield's attitude. His cartoons were willing to play around with the customs of the format, with its very post-modern self-referring humour (not to mention the fact that Garfield himself appeared to be fully aware that he was really a character in a cartoon show), and frequent stabs at experimental episodes – I'm thinking along the lines of the one where Garfield wakes up in the wrong cartoon, or those where he steps out of the context of his own cartoon and gives a lecture on what makes successful comedy, or whatnot. Most of it paid off really well.

And I just realised that I managed to get through most of this comment without reference to that live action movie with a CGI Garfield that 20th Century Fox churned out last year. Well, maybe one day when I'm feeling bored I'll finally give in, sit down and give it a chance, but I don't anticipate that it'll come anywhere close to the standards set by this TV show (for one thing I just can't picture Garfield without Lorenzo Music's vocals). This is, after all, one the finest pieces of animated TV that us kids of the late 80s/early 90s ever had the pleasure of growing up with. And it's not the sort of thing that can be easily repeated.

Grade: A (that's for Garfield, not Orson, mind)

I Love This Show!!!!!!!!

Man do I miss this show. One of the best cartoons ever made! I used to watch this when it was on the air and even after it went off I watched the re-runs until stupid UPN stop showing them in 1997! Great kids show. I actually like the show better then the Garfield comics. The thing that really the show kick off was that Lorenzo Music, aka Carlton the doorman on Rhoda, did the voice of Garfield! He is thee perfect person to do his voice. It was so upsetting when he died. He wasn't in The Garfield Movie and that made it suck not to mention they totally changed Jon in it. I always wanted Odie to talk. Garfield and Nermal can "talk" so why can't Odie? I also liked the barnyard animals. My favorite was Wade, so scared of everything. Poor duck. I wish this show never went off. Why did it? It was so successful. Bring it back! Come on Jim Davis! Bring back Garfield and Friends!

An Honest Review

This is Garfield...staring Venkman from the Real Ghostbusters. I am sure there were complaints.

So it's about Garfield, he's the star, but it has the "and friends" tag. And in this case it is important. The Friends are really the stars of the show and the source of most of the humor.

Garfield is just kind of there to mumble and kick Odie off the table. That doesn't really work for a cartoon. At least not anything longer than a short video.

Somewhere along the lines the studio executives must have realized that you can't make a Cartoon around a lazy cat that hates Mondays and really only gets up to eat. The jokes work fine in a 3 frame comic strip but a full cartoon needs something more.

So the friends were introduced and in a few short episodes the focus switched to his friends...and it worked. The Garfield name draws you in...but really once you're watching it, if it's funny you are going to keep watching it even if Garfield gets the least amount of screen time.

And they made it great by doing the classic cartoon thing of taking cute characters and making them kind of sadistic.

A show that aged like fine wine

The animation is so warm and comforting, the grain of the audio is perfection, the voices and the dialect of the voices are also warm and soothing especially accompanied by the classic audio grain. Something about the old style like this is simply delightful. The stories are simple, yet excel at it, especially accompanied by all of the other auditory and visual aspects. The settings are also comforting, and compact, they vary and are very well done. The jokes are well delivered and sometimes subtle to a point where you can always catch on, and still get the subtle feeling the character went for. The dialogue really hints at tender connections in-depth but appears to be regular, casual, almost masterful conversation on the surface value. Considering all of these variables, the Garfield and Friends show is nothing short of a classic that not only hit everything it went for, but it also has the perfect vintage of the time it was made. Overall, a wholesome experience. For everyone in the family.
