Dianne Crittenden, casting director on the original Star Wars who also worked on Pretty Woman, Spider-Man 2 and dozens of other films during a 40-year career, died March 19 at her home in Pacific Palisades. She was 82.
Her friend and colleague Ilene Starger confirmed her passing to Deadline.
Born on August 6, 1941, in the Jamaica neighborhood of Queens, NY, Crittenden got her start in the entertainment industry working with Howard Zieff, a photographer and director. They worked on advertising campaigns, TV commercials and films.
Her first project as casting director was Terrence Malick’s 1973 drama Badlands, starring Martin Sheen-Sissy Spacek, on which Bruce Springsteen based his song “Nebraska” a decade later. Crittenden worked on a few other films and TV shows, including the Emmy-winning 1976 Sally Field miniseries Sybil, before land the casting-director role of a lifetime — a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.

Let’s jump back to the year 2020, infamously known now as the year of Covid-19. Jacob Elordi from Euphoria played his son. The movie wasn’t great, but Hogan himself was amazing to talk to, with him chatting with me much longer than he had to, telling me stories, such as when he was hiking in...

John Cornell, the Australian director and writer whose longtime friendship and comedy partnership with actor Paul Hogan led to the pair’s word on Crocodile Dundee and other film and TV projects, died today at his home in Byron Bay, New South Wales following a two-decade battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was 80.

Our look at underappreciated films of the 80s continues, as we head back to 1988...
Either in terms of ticket sales or critical acclaim, 1988 was dominated by the likes of Rain Man, Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Coming To America. It was the year Bruce Willis made the jump from TV to action star with Die Hard, and became a star in the process.
It was the year Leslie Nielsen made his own jump from the small to silver screen with Police Squad spin-off The Naked Gun, which sparked a hugely popular franchise of its own. Elsewhere, the eccentric Tim Burton scored one of the biggest hits of the year with Beetlejuice, the success of which would result in the birth of Batman a year later. And then there was Tom Cruise, who managed to make a drama about a student-turned-barman into a $170m hit, back when $170m was still an...

Oh my, how the mighty had fallen! I had vague memories of Monkey Shines when I watched it over twenty years ago and, after revisiting this, it all makes sense why this film doesn’t spring to mind when I think of Romero’s great early body of work. George A. Romero’s first studio film ideally should have been the perfect opportunity for him to showcase his talent in a direction that nobody would expect and on paper it would seem that was his intention.
The story itself isn’t exactly straight horror. Tomorrow is the 25th anniversary of Big, the movie that boosted Tom Hanks from being just a funny leading man to an Oscar-worthy movie star. It’s also the comedy that put filmmaker Gary Ross on the map as he too earned an Academy Award nomination for this, his first feature script (co-written by Steven Spielberg’s sister, Anne). Directed by Penny Marshall, it was a word of mouth kind of hit, having opened in second place behind Crocodile Dundee II in its second week then going on to become the fourth highest grossing movie of 1988. For those of us around the same age as Josh Haskins (David Moscow/Hanks) at the time, it was a thought-provoking What If? situation even if most of us found a lot of the scenarios and behavior to be well-below the character’s maturity level. The tricky thing about Big in terms of highlighting its best moments is that it’s...

If you’re a crocodile hoping to make some money at the box office, you better grab a safari hat and add a “Dundee” to the end of your name because chances are, audiences won’t want to see you otherwise.
As you may have heard, Creature, a schlocky B-movie about a half-gator, half-human monster, utterly bombed at the box office this weekend, swamping up a disastrous $327,000 from 1,507 theaters. That opening, which ranks as the worst-ever debut for a film playing in more than 1,500 theaters, means that each screening of Creature had an average of fewer than six viewers. No matter you look at it,...

It was 15 years ago that Twister changed America's summer blockbuster season. It didn't do it with cutting-edge special effects or immersive 3D technology or previously unknown storytelling devices. No, Twister altered something more fundamental about summer: its start date. Before 1996, the summer movie season began with Memorial Day Weekend, at the end of May. There was no official decree, nothing in the Hollywood city ordinances, but that's how it worked. The trend began with Star Wars in 1977, and subsequent Memorial Day releases included Alien, The Empire Strikes Back, Rocky III, Return of the Jedi, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Rambo II, Beverly Hills Cop II, Crocodile Dundee II, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Back to the Future Part III, Backdraft, Alien 3...

Australian actor Ernie Dingo has been suffering from bouts of depression since he was accused of slapping a young boy during a school visit over the summer - because the assault charge has left him unable to work. The "Crocodile Dundee II" star was charged with aggravated common assault after allegedly striking an 11-year-old pupil at a primary school in Carnarvon, Western Australia in July.
He pleaded not guilty in October and is due to stand trial in February 2011. Dingo reveals he has been banned from working with children since the incident, and he's devastated because he has always loved performing for youngsters.
He says, "I haven't worked because (the Department of) Education deem me unfit, as a threat... I can't do any work with children, and I have done that all my life. (I'm dealing with) a lot of negatives, mental anguishes, inserts of depression, not being able to work.

"Mainly because of the fact of the disrespect of who I am. I have worked with kids. Kids jump all over me 24/7 when I work with kids... I do it because I love kids, and I love to try and work out a positive way for them..."
Dingo faces a possible jail sentence if convicted.

SYDNEY -- George Miller's musical penguins have sung and danced their way into the record books in their home territory.
Since its Boxing Day opening, Happy Feet has grossed AUS$12.13 million ($9.3 million), the highest opening week of all time for an Australian film, distributor Roadshow Films said Tuesday.
The Warner Bros./Village Roadshow Pictures animated feature is expected to quickly join the top five Australian films of all time. That group includes No. 1 Crocodile Dundee, which has taken in $36.7 million; George Miller's Babe ($28.3 million); Baz Luhrmann's Moulin Rouge ($21.3 million); Crocodile Dundee 2 ($19.1 million); and Strictly Ballroom ($16.8 million).
Feet also will help boost Australian films' share of the boxoffice for 2006. Those figures will be officially released by the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia in the next few weeks. The No. 2-grossing Australian film of the year was Kenny, which took AUS$7.6 million ($5.8 million), followed by Jindabyne with AUS$5.2 million ($4 million).
