On April 5th, 20th Century Studios will be giving a theatrical release to The First Omen, which serves as a prequel to the 1976 horror classic The Omen (watch it Here) – but some reviewers, including JoBlo’s own JimmyO, have already had the chance to see the movie, and their largely positive reactions started hitting social media last night. We have assembled some of them below, and some of the descriptions used in these reactions include disturbing, chilling, stunning, fascinating, and unrepentantly ghoulish.
The film stars Nell Tiger Free of the Apple TV+ series Servant, and will be hitting the big screen with an R rating for violent content, grisly/disturbing images, and brief graphic nudity… although it nearly got an Nc-17.

If your idea of a laugh riot is a high-school dreamboat being separated from his penis by an axe while treacly ‘80s classic “On the Wings of Love” soars on the soundtrack, then Lisa Frankenstein might be for you. So long as your frame of reference doesn’t go as far back as Edward Scissorhands. Diablo Cody’s screenplay about a maladjusted teen who finds a sense of purpose by bonding with a reanimated corpse delivers enough funny lines to make you want to cut it some slack for a minute. But Zelda Williams’ clunky direction soon stifles that good will as this retro-minded horror-comedy-romance lurches from scene to scene without ever building much steam.
Focus is positioning the release as a Valentine’s Day date movie for young audiences who like a touch of graveyard humor and gore with their canoodling. Maybe they’ll get a kick out of its garish candy colors,...

In yet another example of anime blending into the real world, to celebrate the release of the Kizumonogatari -Koyomi Vamp- anime film, a compilation re-edit of the three Kizumonogatari anime films, the film has taken over Shinjuku Sanchome Tokyo Metro station in a media blitz until January 15. For those with a keen eye and have seen the original three films, you might be able to tell that Shinjuku Sanchome Station was the inspiration behind the iconic scene where Araragi and Kiss-Shot Acerola-Orion Heart-Under-Blade met for the very first time. Alongside the collaboration, the film also announced that French artist Clémentine will be returning to compose the ending theme song for the compilation film after previously working on the themes for the second and third outings. The Return to Horror High episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? was Written by Emilie Black, Narrated by Travis Hopson, Edited by Victoria Verduzco, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
The 1980s, especially the mid-1980s, were basically the heyday of slasher films, many of them were being released each year in theaters and direct-to-video, some of them making huge box office numbers like the Nightmare on Elm Street movies, the Friday the 13th movies, and the Halloween movies. Non-franchise films were not as big both financially and critically but they didn’t do too badly either. Then came Return to Horror High in 1987 (watch it Here). Some would say that the film was ahead of its time, being a very meta horror comedy about slasher films, having endings within endings, and twisting the sub-genre on its head. However, the film failed,...

Yesterday, we shared the news that Encyclopocalypse Publications, the company that not only brought John Skipp and Craig Spector’s novelization of Fright Night and Jeff Rovin’s novelization of Re-Animator back into print, but have also commissioned new novelizations of older films like Scared to Death, Wishmaster, Vamp, Titan Find (a.k.a. Creature), and Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, is set to bring us a novelization of the 1989 Troma release Redneck Zombies. But that’s not the only novelization they currently have in the works. Encyclopocalypse Publications has also announced that they’ve got Snow Shark author Brian G. Berry working on a novelization of the 1986 low budget classic Nail Gun Massacre, while A Bouquet of Viscera author Bridgett Nelson is writing a novelization of the unnerving 2008 film Deadgirl!
Written and directed by Terry Lofton, Nail Gun Massacre told the following story: Forget about that guy with the chainsaw.

A couple months ago, we heard that we’ll be getting a novelization of Attack of the Killer Tomatoes from Encyclopocalypse Publications and author Jeff Strand. Happy Friday, everyone! This time last week, we celebrated the amazing independent horror films that were released throughout the 1970s, so it only makes sense that we shift our focus today to all the great indie genre movies and moviemakers that helped make the ’80s one of the most unforgettable decades in horror.
Much like the 1970s, we saw a handful of eventual Masters of Horror establish themselves as genre storytellers on the indie side of things throughout the ’80s. On the East Coast, we saw an explosion of creativity come out of New York City with filmmakers such as William Lustig, Frank Henenlotter, Larry Fessenden, and Troma’s Lloyd Kaufman making their feature debuts in the world of horror during the ’80s. And even though Troma Entertainment was founded in 1974, the company really came into its own during the 1980s as well. The indie studio founded by the aforementioned...

Look, those of you who know me likely already know why I have an affinity for New World Pictures (hint: they’re responsible for a movie I think is really “swellraiser”). But I’ve always wondered what kind of film studio had the gumption to produce a movie at the height of the AIDS crisis that was directed by an openly gay man and revels in kink, incorporates copious amounts of blood, and dares us to indulge in our darker nature? It turns out that for a studio like New World Pictures, this tact was pretty much par for the course. New World’s history is all about taking chances, an approach that would ultimately lead to its downfall.
New World was founded by Roger Corman and his brother Gene in 1970. They distributed their first film, the biker flick Angels Die Hard, in June of that year, but their first...

In what I thought would be my final feature for the Class of 88 series, I sang the praises of Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers as the kind of trashy goodness that’s quite separate from movies we watch just so that we can rag on them for being so terrible. As luck would have it, earlier this month I stumbled on a movie very much on the opposite side of the equation, Jag Mundhra’s schlockfest Hack-o-Lantern. I just couldn’t pass up the opportunity to at least briefly talk about one of the most entertainingly terrible movies I’ve seen in recent memory.
To provide some context, I’d never even heard of Hack-o-Lantern until I saw it being advertised at the Mahoning Drive-In, a bastion of genre cinema nestled in the Pocono Mountains of Northeastern Pennsylvania. Hack-o-Lantern was the first billed movie for their second annual Drive-In VHS-Fest,...

Check out this cool poster for Seed 2 director Marcel Walz’s forthcoming remake of Herschell Gordon Lewis’ Blood Feast, which stars genre veterans Robert Rusler (Nightmare on Elm St. 2), Caroline Williams (Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2), Sadie Katz (Wrong Turn 6), and Sophie Monk (The Hills Run Red).
Blood Feast will make its Us debut on June 23rd.
Fuad Ramses (Robert Rusler – A Nightmare On Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge, Vamp, Tales of Halloween) and his family have moved from the United States to France, where they run an American diner. Since business is not going too well, Fuad also works night shifts in a museum of ancient Egyptian culture. During these long, lonely nights he is repeatedly drawn to a statue representing the seductive ancient goddess Ishtar. He becomes more and more allured by the goddess as she speaks to him in visions. Eventually he succumbs to her deadly charms.

Mazes And Monsters provided the first feature role for a young Tom Hanks in 1982 - and warned against the perils of Dungeons & Dragons...
Where there's great popularity, there's sometimes an equal and opposite backlash. Pokemon has occasionally been accused of promoting everything from Satanism to animal cruelty. The book Why Knock Rock, published in 1984, warned of the morally corrosive dangers hidden in the music of Judas Priest, Kiss and Led Zeppelin.
Before all this, there was the moral panic surrounding Dungeons & Dragons. From humble beginnings, the role-playing game quickly became a phenomenon in the 1970s, taking the company behind it - Tactical Studies Rules, founded by Gary Gygax - from a tiny cottage industry to a 600-strong firm by the end of the decade.

Sometimes some pretty influential stuff by some pretty talented filmmakers has to season into its own. After being around long enough to see something make its debut, fall into obscurity for a couple of decades, be lovingly put on life support by loyal fans, and then rise like a phoenix to the accolades it deserved all along, I’ve got some perspective. That perspective is more than affirmed with “Vamp”. This 1986 horror comedy was well ahead of its time, and was influential in more ways than one.

If you read our "Class of 1986" issue of Deadly Magazine from earlier this year, then you know Richard Wenk’s Vamp is a film that is near and dear to my horror-loving heart. The 1980s were an exceptional time for vampire-themed cinema, with films like Fright Night, The Lost Boys, Near Dark, and The Hunger immediately capturing the imaginations of filmgoers during that era. But the one film that has been grossly overlooked over the last 30 years has been Vamp, and it’s great to see Wenk’s incredibly clever and funny take on a very popular sub-genre celebrated in grand fashion with the recent Special Edition Blu-Ray release from Arrow Video.
For the uninitiated, Vamp follows college students Keith (Chris Makepeace) and Aj (Robert Rusler), who are desperate to move into their fraternity house to escape dorm life, but before they can start packing their bags, they’re tasked...

Richard Wenk's 1986 horror comedy is even better than we remember -- funny, reasonably scary, and stylish. Grace Jones' vampire queen is intimidatingly strange, and great makeup effects and polished direction insure that the jokes and chills get equal attention. Happy October, everyone! As expected, our favorite month is kicking off with a ton of horror and sci-fi home releases – 25 to be precise – and there’s a great selection of new and old titles coming our way on October 4th. As far as recent movies, The Purge: Election Year, The Mind’s Eye, Swiss Army Man and Fender Bender all arrive on both Blu and DVD this week, as well as the stunning South Korean horror film The Wailing. Several great cult classics are getting the HD treatment on Tuesday, including Terence Fisher’s The Earth Dies Screaming and Richard Wenk’s Vamp (both hugely underrated films, in my opinion).
Other notable Blu-ray and DVD releases for October 4th include X-Men: Apocalypse, House of Manson, Daughter of Dracula, Sharknado: The 4th Awakens, They’re Watching and Chosen Survivors.
The Earth Dies Screaming (1964) (Kino Lorber, Blu-ray)
Their target: Humanity.

Fancy some horror? We've been taking a look at the discs of Ghoulies, The Burning, Psychomania and more...
“Have you ever heard a frog scream?”, the tag-line to George McCowan’s 1972 ecological horror Frogs (out now on Arrow Blu-ray) should have read. Indeed, for any of you readers that have ever been rudely awoken at 2am by the sound of a traumatised frog being gifted to you by your pet cat/furry psychopath, an amphibian cry of terror is probably the second worst sound there is (behind, of course, Kaiser Chiefs).

Not that frogs themselves are inherently evil, though viewing this classic dose of seventies green-themed nastiness might convince you otherwise. Slugs are Ok, too, though we’ll get on to them later on in this month’s vague...

Bloodsuckers, the water-soaked paranormal, and a Herschell Gordon Lewis film collection are coming out on Blu-ray this October from Arrow Video, and the official special features lists and cover art for The Herschell Gordon Lewis Feast collection, Dark Water (2002), and 1986's Vamp tease plenty to enjoy on all three releases:
"Mvd Entertainment Group furthers the distribution of Arrow Video in the Us with several new titles in October...
Dark Water [Blu-ray + DVD] (October 11th)
After terrifying audiences worldwide with the blockbuster J-horror classic Ring and its sequel, director Hideo Nakata returned to the genre for Dark Water, another highly atmospheric, and critically acclaimed, tale of the supernatural which took the common theme of the "dead wet girl" to new heights of suspense and drama.
Based upon on a short story by Ring author Koji Suzuki, Dark Water follows Yoshimi, a single mother struggling to win sole custody of her only child, Ikuko.

Sequelizer: Fuqua Resurrects Vintage TV Series to Maudlin Effect
Upon the project’s official announcement, it may not have seemed a necessarily surprising or even awful idea to resurrect the mid-80s television series The Equalizer to be retrofitted as an action vehicle for Denzel Washington. In fact, in a day of dodgy remakes, reinterpretations, and constant regurgitations, it seemed an inspired bit of casting. After initial names backed out and it landed in the hands of Antoine Fuqua, who would then be reunited with his Training Day star, anticipation kicked into high gear in what seemed a perfect remedy to wash away the cornball melodrama of Olympus Has Fallen in Fuqua’s otherwise gritty and often hard-hitting filmography. Unfortunately, though sporting some considerably violent sequences, it is pure studio fodder, suffering from some miscasting, a bloated running time, and a flat lined screenplay. That said, Washington is a winning presence,...

They are perhaps the most versatile monster we know. The vampire. Sometimes sexy, sometimes proper, sometimes feral, sometimes classic. The vampire comes in so many different forms.
With the release of Black Water Vampire on DVD and VOD tomorrow, January 21st, we celebrate the Top 11 Most Vicious Vampires.
There are so many to choose from. Vampires have been present in movies and television forever, so picking out the most vicious is no mean feat. We've done our best to narrow it down to the Top 11 but also have our usual honorable mentions to help flesh out the list (pun definitely intended).
We'd like to recognize the infected Alpha male vampire from I Am Legend; that dude was simply badass. In any version of Salem's Lot, be it either of the television mini-series or the book, Kurt Barlow has always been Type 1 brutal. Chris Sarandon's Jerry Dandridge in Fright Night...

The likable vampire seems like somewhat of a paradox. Since the earliest incarnation of count Dracula, the vampire has typically been somewhat of a reviled species. However, over time, it has been scientifically proven (no it hasn’t) that audiences find vampires irresistibly sexy and dangerous but charming.
Contemporary vampire fiction has forever changed the landscape of vampire cinema and television. We now see vampires cast as the protagonists and antiheroes in movies and TV, as opposed to being almost exclusively cast in the role of the villain. Anne Rice was a pioneer of vampire fiction in her heyday and still continues to be. She was undoubtedly a huge inspiration for L.J. Smith (The Vampire Diaries Books) and Charlaine Harris (The Sookie Stackhouse Novels). Both authors have further changed the light in which vampires are portrayed, both in fiction and on the big and small screens. We didn’t forget to mention Stephanie Meyer.

Anyone who knows me knows that I have some seriously mad love for the 1986 horror comedy cult classic Vamp, directed by Richard Wenk and starring Chris Makepeace, Robert Rusler, Gedde Watanabe, Sandy Baron, Grace Jones and the delightful Dedee Pfeiffer.
While I'm still unsure of just how I talked my mom into renting Vamp for me in the first place, I can distinctly remember every single moment of the very first time I took this often overlooked gem home from the video store. While there had been several vampire movies in that era of genre filmmaking that I really loved as a kid, I always felt like Vamp was something totally different and weird- and I liked that.
For those of you who've never seen Vamp (last time I checked, it was on Netflix Instant), the movie follows two college kids named Keith (Makepeace) and Aj (Rusler), who have to...

We open with Benny working the bar at the local Gumbo Shack in Carencro, Louisiana.
Should I waste time commenting on how good Ty Olssen looks in that tight white shirt and the green apron which brings out his eyes? And that smile… Yeah, okay, snapping out.

Oh, Chuck! Take that accent and stow it away for a rainy day.
A lone trucker sitting at the bar comments about the easy camaraderie between them and wonders if they have something going on. “Nuh..uh, she’s more like a li’l sister to me, y’know,” Benny replies. The trucker, who’s about as old as her grandfather, wonders if he can take a shot at her.

Adi Shankar (producer of The Grey) will produce a new all-female action-style film, to be written by Dutch Southern, kinda like The Expendables.
Now, we wrote about how this was a fucking good idea a long-ass time ago. Not only have we been excited about it in our forums, but we actually made a list a while back. The impetus for that list was a statement Sigourney Weaver made about how it sucks that she's too old to play Ripley in another action Aliens film. We were pissed that Old Dudes get to keep making action films, but Weaver didn't think she could just because she's a chick.
Let's update our wish list. Because all the dudes in The Expendables films are Old Mother Fuckers, I demand that the female cast be Old Bitches. None of this "Zoe Saldana" or "Milla Jovovich" bullshit other sites keep talking about. Seriously. Can...

This horror and sci-fi festival would rather sift through the cultural debris for classic trash than scrabble for the latest offerings. There's a rare chance to see 1970's notorious rabid-hippy bloodbath I Drink Your Blood in its fullest grindhouse glory, for example, or neglected Dario Argento horror Four Flies On Grey Velvet (1971). Still too highbrow? Then how about 80s heroines like Grace Jones's Vamp or Brigitte Nielsen's Red Sonja? And a Troma triple bill? How low can you go?

Anthony Burgess And Cinema, Manchester
It's the 50th anniversary of the publication of A Clockwork Orange, and this celebration of Burgess's great dystopian (Mancunian?) novel spreads the net a little wider than simply Stanley Kubrick's legendary movie. Well, there are slow weeks for new DVD releases, and then there are Slow weeks. This time around there are literally no new releases hitting store shelves aside from Bridesmaids, and I'm assuming it's because no one wanted to compete with Star Wars on Blu-ray. Probably a wise choice. There are still plenty of TV releases, however, including The Kennedys mini-series, the second seasons of both Hung and Modern Family, and (to go with Bridesmaids) the first season of Mike & Molly starring Melissa McCarthy. Also hitting Blu-ray for the first time this week we have Disney's Dumbo, Breakfast at Tiffany's, Dead Heat and Vamp starring Grace Jones. Will you be buying or renting anything this week? Check out the full list of new release after the jump. Amazon.com Widgets

Boccaccio ’70 (1962)
Synopsis: Four legendary filmmakers direct some of Europe’s biggest stars in Boccaccio ’70, a landmark anthology film. Mario Monicelli (Big Deal on Madonna Street), Federico Fellini (8½), Luchino Visconti (The Leopard) and Vittorio De Sica (Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow) direct Sophia Loren, Anita Ekberg, Romy Schneider and more through four stories of unashamed eros. Modeled on Boccaccio’s Decameron, they are comic moral tales about the hypocrisies surrounding sex in 1960s Italy. Monicelli’s “Renzo e Luciana” (cut out of the original American release) is a frothy tale of young love and office politics in the big city. Fellini’s notorious “Le tentazioni del dottor Antonio” features Ekberg as a busty model in a milk advertisement whose image begins to haunt an aging prude. Visconti’s “Il Lavoro” stars Romy Schneider as a trophy wife enduring her husband’s very public affairs,...
