It’s easy to think of the kind of stories that get told in the comic book world as just one genre or tone, but as seen below, graphic novels, comic strips, and other sequential art have offered up an incredible range of storytelling. And these stories have been inspiring great TV shows for years, even before superhero stories dominated the box office.
There were plenty of options that nearly made the list, like the WB’s “Smallville,” which squandered its early potential after running just a few seasons too long. Because one of the most exciting things about these stories is that there’s a rich variety to choose from.
With editorial contributions from Liz Shannon Miller, Ben Travers, and Hanh Nguyen.

This X-Men ’97 article contains spoilers.
Life has never been easy for the X-Men, or any mutant in the Marvel Universe. They’re feared and hated, oppressed just for being alive. They’re betrayed time and again, even by heroes who call themselves their friends.
But in the history of the X-Men, there are three stories that stand out as particularly heartbreaking: Mutant Massacre, E is for Extinction, and Fall of X. And the latest episode of X-Men ’97 just combined them all into one shocking half-hour full of deaths.
“Remember It” begins as a love letter to all things X-Men, as Magneto, Rogue, and Gambit head to the island nation of Genosha. Once the home of an oppressive human regime (modeled in the original comics after Apartheid South Africa), Genosha has become a home for mutants, a sovereign nation under mutant rule. Sanguis bibimus! Corpus edimus! In a partnership between Mutant, Hollywood Records, and 20th Century Films, the haunting soundtrack to "The First Omen" can soon be yours on vinyl. The prequel to Richard Donner's 1976 masterpiece, director Arkashsa Stevenson's most excellent "The First Omen" is the rare example of a legacy film done right, and what /Film's Witney Seibold described in his review, as "a film of dank, bloody, spittle-flecked dread, made no less powerful by the foregone conclusion." Donner's original film shocked audiences upon release and is believed to this day to be a cursed film, but Stevenson's prequel film had to fight with the MPA to avoid an Nc-17 rating, so the franchise tradition of scaring the squares is alive and well.
"The Omen" was scored by Jerry Goldsmith, who was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Score, but took home the "Best Original Song" statue for the movie's theme "Ave Satani,...

X-Men ‘97 is finally here and the animated series is quickly proving itself worthy of its predecessor’s legacy. The series serves as a revival and continuation of X-Men: The Animated Series. It follows a group of mutant superheroes dealing with the loss of their leader, Professor Charles Xavier. The series recently debuted with its first two episodes and quickly gained overwhelmingly positive critical reception.
A still from X-Men ’97
On top of its positive reviews, the revival has managed to pull off something truly extraordinary by beating a record that even Avengers: Endgame could not achieve despite being the MCU’s highest-grossing film and a cultural juggernaut. Moreover, X-Men ‘97‘s record brings some reprieve to Marvel Studios considering their recent decline in form. Here is everything you need to know about the X-Men ‘97 record that eclipses Avengers: Endgame.

Evaluating animated TV can be tricky. Not only is animation a medium that crosses a wide range of genres, but so many of our earliest memories in front of a screen are tied to an animated series, short, or special, and that impermeable nostalgia can be difficult to penetrate with typical critical tools like reason, logic, and other objective criteria. Some shows just click. They hit at the right time and capture a blossoming imagination. When it comes to ranking animated series, you’re not just analyzing TV shows. You’re critiquing childhoods.
Of course, animation is also one of the more expansive TV subsets, with dozens of different tones and styles that make comparisons often feel like apples and oranges. There are cartoons, anime, short films, short series, short films turned into short series, web series, adult-oriented animation, and that’s before digging into all the individual genres, like...

One of the best things about the X-Men is the vast roster of characters that allow a myriad of people to see themselves as a member of the mutant superhero team. But if you were a kid who wanted to be all of the mutants, you may have gravitated towards Morph, the shapeshifter who could temporarily take on the appearance and superpowers of any other mutant out there. During my childhood years, there was many an argument about who would get the honor of pretending to be Morph on the playground.
Even though Morph (originally voiced by Ron Rubin) seemed to meet his maker in the first episode of the original "X-Men: The Animated Series," the character eventually returned from his presumed grave, albeit under the influence of the villain Mr. Sinister. Morph used his shapeshifting abilities to create chaos among the X-Men on many occasions, but thankfully, he was only acting on Mr.

Cue that iconic theme tune because X-Men ‘97 has us squeezing back into our colorful spandex once again. It’s been nearly 27 years since “Graduation Day” saw X-Men: The Animated Series bow out in style, and while Fox’s X-Men movies and the Marvel Cinematic Universe have changed how we see Charles Xavier’s Gifted Youngsters, it feels good to be home with this nostalgic cartoon caper.
Picking up events several months after the season finale seemingly closed the book on X-Men: The Animated Series, the class of ‘97 is still living in the shadow of Professor X’s “death” in the two-part series premiere. Morph and Bishop are on the team and in the credits, while Magneto has had an apparent change of heart, choosing to honor Charles Xavier’s final wish that he take over leadership of the mutant team.

Spoilers for "X-Men '97" to follow.
Storm, mistress of the elements ... no more? In episode 2 of "X-Men '97" — "Mutant Liberation Begins" — Storm/Ororo Monroe (still voiced by Alison Sealy-Smith) took a shot from a gun fired by the villainous X-Cutioner, an assassin affiliated with the anti-mutant hate group the Friends of Humanity. The shot, intended for Magneto, robbed Storm of her weather-manipulating powers: "The breeze is gone ... I cannot feel it, nor the moisture, nor the air," she despairs before the tears finally swell up. It's a sign of Magneto's growth of character that he stays his hand of X-Cution after Storm's fate.
According to Beast, the gun fired the same radiation used by the collars that inhibit mutant powers. However, the blast is concentrated to deliver its dosage on a cellular level, so the depower is permanent. Storm, feeling she doesn't belong with the X-Men anymore and unable to say goodbye in person,...

You know what's cool? The unabashedly sci-fi nerdery on display in "Dune" and this week's follow-up, "Dune: Part Two." You know what's even cooler? Coming down from that spice-induced high in the days and weeks and even months after the fact, blasting the sumptuous and epic soundtrack from composer Hans Zimmer in a new release crafted by the fine folks over at Mutant (the new shop that rose from the ashes of the shutdown of Mondo).

Back in March of 2023, we reported on the death of the greatest boutique pop culture poster company, Mondo. Granted, the company still exists in name only underneath the Funko brand, but Mondo as we once knew it (including a majority of the founders and core staff that made the company possible) is over. Fortunately, a savior appeared in the form of ... the team that gave us Mondo in the first place and the wonderful weirdos (Elijah Wood and Daniel Noah) over at SpectreVision. Former Mondo creative directors Spencer Hickman, Eric Garza, Mitch Putnam, and Mo Shafeek joined CEO Jenny Jacobi to form the new company, Mutant, which will produce limited-edition artwork, posters, soundtracks on vinyl, collectibles, events, and more.
One of Mutant's first releases is the original motion picture soundtrack for "Lisa Frankenstein," so you can relive all the glorious, creepy '80s goodness whenever the urge to build your own undead boyfriend beckons.

Established in 2004, Mondo forever changed the landscape of pop culture collectibles — from t-shirts to screen printed movie posters, vinyl soundtracks, toys, board games and even home goods, the company elevated fandom from a hobby to a lifestyle. It has not only inspired dozens of similar businesses worldwide and propelled the consumption of physical media, but minted a team that quickly and widely became known for its passion, creativity and shrewd decisionmaking. On Monday, four of their former leaders — led by Eric Garza, Mitch Putnam, Spencer Hickman and Mo Shafeek — debuted a new endeavor leveraging their experience, relationships and reputation: Mutant.
Led by CEO Jenny Jacobi, a Vidiots Foundation advisory board member and seven-year Alamo Drafthouse veteran, the quartet will produce posters, music, apparel and more. The announcement them a chance to start fresh after exiting Mondo, now under the ownership of vinyl figurine company Funko Inc.

I found this year’s list to be quite tricky. I’m quite happy with my order from ten through six but the top five have changed a fair amount over the last month or so. Like with any list I guess, it’s just a temperature test of how you’re feeling at that time. I also wrestled with the inclusion of my choice for number ten but sometimes you just have to be honest with yourself and admit when you’ve really enjoyed a movie. On an observational level, there’s slightly less animation on this year’s list than there has been in previous couple of years. The latest Spider-Verse instalment, which I have got in my honourable mentions, could’ve made the cut but it feels like the first part of a wider story. If they stick the landing with Beyond though it’ll likely retroactively...

A strange thing happens to me at the end of each year. Tasked with compiling a list of cultural favorites, I find myself drawing a blank. It’s as if I haven’t spent the past 365 days watching films, binging various TV shows, listening to albums or attending theater productions to prepare for this very moment.
On the heel of a deadline, I usually fire off some texts to friends — some desperate, all pleading. Is there anything you’ve watched this year that deserves more attention, I ask. What’s the best song you’ve heard? The best movie you watched? The best series?
Other than outsourcing a bit of my job, the questions end up being a good exercise in perspective. They reorient my attitude toward the compilation process. I begin to recognize the importance of reflecting, even casually, on a year’s worth of culture. I get excited about what’s to come,...

Four (an unusually high number) recent studio theatrical releases added PVOD home availability over the last week. No question which among them scored best — “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” (Disney) took the #1 slot on all charts.
Consumer options vary among the titles. “Indiana Jones” can immediately be digitally downloaded for $19.99. “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” (Paramount) is $19.99 for a 48 hour rental, as is “The Last Voyage of the Demeter” (Universal). “Mutant” can be purchased for $24.99. Meanwhile, Disney released “The Boogeyman” at a $14.99 initial rental price.
The rush to open could be related to two factors — holiday viewing, but also the anticipated (but not yet confirmed) release of “Barbie” (Warner Bros.) as early as Tuesday. Presales are available on multiple sites, but none yet list a specific date.
Oddly, only “Indiana Jones” among the four new entries made all three charts. “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” was released Friday,...

With August coming to a close, we have officially come to the end of the summer movie season. A season that kicked off with The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 on May 5 and ended this weekend with Gran Turismo. Along the way we had some hits and some misses (does anyone even remember that Ben Affleck and Robert Rodriguez released a movie called Hypnotic back in May?! I actually enjoyed it for what it’s worth!) So with summer in our rear view, what movie released in the past three months was your favorite. As always if you don’t see your favorite, click other and let us know in the comments.

Heavy spoilers for "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem" to follow.
"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem" is a bold reimagining of the franchise that serves to both introduce a whole new generation to the Turtles while also recapturing a sense of nostalgia for older viewers who are not necessarily watching every single animated TV show. The movie features a unique visual style that builds on an exciting trend from recent years and pushes the animation medium forward, with a story that reinvents many of the classic characters with new backstories and motivations that still capture their essence while breathing new life into them. The result is a movie that puts the teenage back in "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," with a fantastic main cast that added a lot of improvisation to the characters.

Four teenage boys run through the streets of New York City. They go to their local bodega, pick up pizzas, watch a movie in the park, and head back home later than their expected curfew. Except: they’re mutant turtles grown to human-size! The idea of the teenage turtles has always been absurd in concept. With constant attempts to reboot it for younger audiences, the franchise exists in a state of fluctuated success. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem should bring the turtles back into the mainstream, as director Jeff Rowe takes the four brothers throughout multiple boroughs on a mission to save the humans that have dismissed them.
Produced and co-written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, Rowe’s film takes the wackiness of the Turtles franchise in stride. The film knows how ridiculous it is. It’s happy to be silly, cracking self-knowing jokes about the flimsy premise holding this story together.

Plot: Follows the Turtle brothers as they work to earn the love of New York City while facing down an army of mutants.
Review: I count myself as a massive fan of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Whether it’s the old cartoon show, the live actions films of the 90’s, or even the original comic book. While I didn’t vibe with the Michael Bay-produced films, I’ve always loved the turtle action in them. So the fact that this one does the right thing and focuses on the titular characters versus April O’Neil, is already a massive win in my book. That’s what I want in a turtle movie and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem has that in spades. And while there’s certainly a degree of origin story present, it mostly serves to reintroduce the public to this gang of green teens versus treading old ground.

In retrospect, it’s downright weird that after roughly a half-dozen reboots and reimaginings, not a single film, cartoon, or video game based on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise prior to 2023 asked the deceptively simple question: “What if the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were actually teenagers?” Not cooler-than-thou, aspirational teens of the focus-tested variety, but awkward, 21st-century teenage boys who film dumb stunts with their siblings on a quest for TikTok glory and infodump about anime at the drop of a dime.
And here we are. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is a film that feels ripped right out of a high school art-class notebook, and sounds like a Twitch stream—thanks, in part, to Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’s deliberately chiptune-infused soundtrack. As such, it’s appropriate that the titular turtles are voiced by a quartet of relatively unknown teen actors who sound like they recorded...

While scores of Tmnt fans have already seen Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, thanks to the magic of preview screenings, others have reserved a table at their favorite pizza joint in anticipation of the film’s release on Wednesday, August 2! Still, a pie decorated with pepperoni, anchovies, and banana peppers isn’t the only way to celebrate the Fab Four’s return. Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies are proud to present a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem featurette exploring the evolution of the Turtles franchise!
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem featurette begins with Tmnt co-creator Kevin Eastman recalling the night the characters were conceived. After drawing a rudimentary version of a Ninja Turtle, Eastman slapped the image on Peter Laird’s desk and said, “This is going to be the next big thing!” More valid words have never been spoken as Tmnt’s popularity skyrocketed through the 1990s,...

Ahead of the film’s August 2nd theatrical release, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have unveiled the companion soundtrack to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. Listen to the album below via Apple Music or Spotify.
All of the films and television shows about our favorite reptilian crime fighters have a certain childlike quality, but with a team including Jeff Rowe (Gravity Falls), Seth Rogen, and Evan Goldberg, Mutant Mayhem breathes new comic life into the Ninja Turtles franchise. Reznor and Ross’ score follows suit, giving up their refined reputation for song titles like “Dipshits on a Roof,” “Murder the Shreks!,” “Puke Girl,” “Megamind, Gru-Type Sh*T,” and “Better Than Mark Ruffalo.”

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has convinced countless Hollywood A-listers to participate in its sprawling superhero saga over the past 15 years. But don’t expect Seth Rogen to join the stable any time soon.
In a new interview with Polygon, Rogen explained that he is hesitant to work on a massive franchise due to fears about compromising the writing process he has developed with longtime partner Evan Goldberg.
“Honestly, probably fear,” Rogen said when asked about what has stopped him from making a Marvel or DC movie. “We really have a pretty specific way we work; me and Evan [Goldberg] have been writers for 20 years at this point. It’s a fear of the process, honestly. And I say that knowing nothing about the process. There are a lot of Marvel things I love.”

The original 1980s Ninja Turtles cartoon intro song described Leonardo quite simply as “Leonardo leads” and Mutant Mayhem is ready to expand on that. In the new film, the Turtles’ father Splinter tells Leonardo that he has “honor.” He does his best to keep the others out of trouble but is still a teenager after all, which means his role as leader comes with a lot of anxiety. Out of all the Turtles, Leonardo is the most okay with living in the sewer until he meets reporter April and discovers his desire to be a part of the human world… And his crush on April.

Igo Kantor, whose Hollywood career took him from Howard Hughes’ projection room to supervising post-production on “Easy Rider” and producing B-movies like “Kingdom of the Spiders” and “Mutant,” died Oct. 15. He was 89.
Kantor, who was born in Vienna and raised in Lisbon, met “Dillinger” director Max Nosseck on the ship to New York. Nosseck gave him an intro to his projectionist brother while Kantor was studying at UCLA, leading to a job screening screened movies for Hughes at a private theater while he was secretly dating actress Jean Peters, whom Hughes later married.
In the early 1960s, Kantor opened post-production house Synchrofilm, becoming the post-production supervisor on “The Monkees,” which led to Bert Schneider and Bob Rafelson hiring him to head post-production on “Easy Rider,” “Five Easy Pieces” and “The King of Marvin Gardens.”
He received Emmy nominations three years in a row for his work on the Bob Hope Christmas specials.

When I review a game, I can usually tell within the first few hours if I’m going to enjoy it or not. For the most part, games show their hand early on because developers are well aware of the time investment they require. Since games can be a slower burn compared to other media, they try to hook players in quickly so they stick around to the end — or for a couple dozen hours at the very least. Unfortunately, my life has become increasingly hectic over the years, so if I’m not invested after the opening hours and tutorials, chances are my opinion of the game will only decline from there.
The Bearded Ladies Consulting’s debut tactical RPG, Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden, was the exception to the rule. After my initial hours with the game, I was not convinced. I thought the animal-mutant characters were charming and the story interesting,...

“Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden” may have caught North American audiences off guard when it was announced back in March, but for pen-and-paper role-playing gamers who grew up in Sweden, it was likely a different story.
“Mutant” is a pen-and-paper role-playing system and world — similar to “Gurps” or “Cyberpunk 2020” — that originally released in Sweden in 1984 and saw a series of expansions and updates through the ’80s and ’90s and all the way up through 2002. In “Mutant,” the human race is largely extinct; in its place, a ragged collection of animal-derived mutants, robots, and a few human remnants are rebuilding in ways big and small, exploring the ruined world and the mysteries of that now-extinct human society. This was elaborated on in several expansions, but “Mutant” and its myriad offshoots never saw translation into other languages — until, that is, 2014, when a new version of “Mutant” was published, set hundreds of years before the original game,...

The best sequels, whether superhero or otherwise, are those ones that bring a measure of control with them. Sure, the audience wants to see things bigger and better than they did in the origin tale but it’s all about whether the filmmakers can do so in the structure of its story. The Dark Knight, Spider-Man 2 and The Winter Soldier are some of the most recent sequels featuring heroic crusaders that have maintained their levels of compelling narratives and characters from before whilst crafting an exciting new one that allows for thing to be bigger and better – there are none so fickle as the superhero fanbase and such things can become “been there, done it” quite quickly in this world. The decision to replace Tim Miller with David Leitch in the director’s chair for Part Deux was a sign that the notches were certainly being cranked up to...
