good short movie for kids; was pretty memorable for me
FieCrier28 January 2005
I hadn't seen this since I guess 1983, when I was ten. Surprisingly, I remembered quite a lot of it! In fact a number of these Weekend Specials have stuck in my memory: The Gold Bug, Zack & the Magic Factory, The Red Room Riddle, etc. There was treasurehunt-type one with a weathervane pointing against the wind; I don't remember what that was, anyone else? (PM me if you do).

In this one, a young boy (Christian Slater!) with a single mom (apparently) is urged to invite a new neighbor girl to go to the beach with them. He's not too hot on becoming friends with a girl, especially since she wears weird clothes, and her house is reportedly haunted by old man Waterman, who used to steal his baseballs. He introduces himself, though, and as soon as he tells her about the baseballs, a rotten old baseball comes slowly bouncing down the stairs and rolls between his feet.

He tells her about the treasure old man Waterman supposedly hid in the house, and they resolve to find it. She finds a map that seems to indicate a tunnel below the yard leading to underneath a big tree. They enlist neighborhood kids to dig up the yard, but get nowhere. They talk to old man Waterman's chauffeur, and some plans for the house are found, along with some other things and problems....

On the video you can tell where the commercials went, from freeze-frames and fades to black. The video is also in two parts (the first ends with "To be continued...", each with their own credits. In between them, and after the last one, the hosts of Weekend Special "Lester and Willie Tyler" appear and talk about the episode briefly. I remember them too. Lester is a dummy, and Willie a ventriloquist.

Christian Slater is recognizable because of his eyes, but otherwise I don't know if I would have known who he was. His voice sounds nothing like it does now! This might have been shot earlier than 1983 - he seems younger than fourteen.

There are arguably a number of morals to the story: the value of making new friends, doing research, and the importance of keeping your parents informed of where you are. Certainly not aimed at adults, but boy I did enjoy it when I was a kid and it was fun seeing it again.

Pretty Good 80's Kid Mystery
gwnightscream17 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This 1983 TV short is based on a book featuring Christian Slater (Heathers) as Billy, a young boy who befriends Angel (Tristine Skyler), a young girl who has just moved into the mansion next door. He tells her that it may be haunted by a wealthy, old miser, Waterman who used to live there. Soon, Angel finds a map in the house and she and Billy try to unlock the mystery of his hidden fortune. I watched this in school long ago and it has some eeriness, but not as much as I remember. It's still a pretty good 80's kid mystery and Slater & Skyler are good as well. If you enjoy mysteries or horror stories, check this out.

They Don't Make 'Em Like This Anymore

Back in the early 80's there were a lot of kid movies involving a haunted house. Mystery at Castle House and the Red Room Riddle both aired between 1982-1983 along with the Haunted Mansion Mystery. Christian Slater and Tristine Skyler are both brilliant. Unlike most kid actors today, they both show a quality performance that is hard to find today. Each brings a uniqueness to the story. Both appear to be "old souls" as much of the child like qualities vanish as we get deeper into the story-line. Although this is made for children, we start to pick up adult themes as the main characters start to mature. The movie is able to capture moments of the innocence of childhood but then enters some interesting moments. What started out as a mystery for kids becomes a lesson in friendship, greed and the struggle not to be in a hurry to grow up.

Great kids special

I vividly remember this afternoon special movie when I was a kid. It was probably one of my favorites of the genre as a kid. I have been trying to find the title of this for years and hopefully get a copy for my kids to watch as I did. This movie definitely left an impression as I still remember the name Old Man Waterman. One thing I was surprised to find out was that it was Christian Slater who starred in it. It has been over 20 years since I saw it, so I am really looking forward to finding a copy. Pull the kids up to the TV on a rainy day and enjoy this movie! They will enjoy the mystery and slightly spooky aspect of it. It may be dated, but they just don't make them like they used to. 9 out of 10 from me on this one.

*laughs hysterically* Oh...my...God...

Warning: Spoilers
Wow! This movie was a riot! I of course sought it out for viewage because of the fact that it features a 13 year old Christian Slater, but I laughed my butt off watching this. It's about the corniest thing you'll see, but you have to cut it some slack because it was made for early 80s morning TV. Definitely worth a watch if you're a Christian Slater fan. (I of course am more than a fan. I love this man with a passion not to be described...) The boy had hair like a brillo pad in this! And...

*SPOILER*

When he's confessing his love for the little girl he becomes friends with, I almost died laughing. It was THE most hilarious thing I've ever seen. Oh God..."I can't explain it. You're more fun than playing baseball with the guys!"

In yo' face every other Christian Slater fan who wasn't a child in the early 80s! I finally found The Haunted Mansion Mystery!
