There are some filmmakers that just effortlessly ooze cool, and Jason Eisener is absolutely one of those people. The Canadian creative first came to mainstream public consciousness after winning the "Grindhouse" fake trailer contest hosted by Robert Rodriguez and SXSW Festival, and his winning short, "Hobo with a Shotgun," led to a feature film of the same name starring Rutger Hauer. In the years that followed, Eisener has been involved in a slew of ridiculously rad projects, like the killer Christmas tree slasher, "Treevenge," serving as a producer on the well-loved "Turbo Kid," co-creating the Vice series "Dark Side of the Ring," and directing a segment of "V/H/S/2" that evolved into the genre-bending feature film, "Kids vs. Aliens."
If you want a film to have striking visuals, snappy dialogue, and a bleeding, beating heart of genre influences, you call Jason Eisener. This is why it makes complete sense that Eisner...

Sixteen years after Eli Roth created the faux trailer Thanksgiving for the Robert Rodriguez / Quentin Tarantino double feature Grindhouse, and a dozen years after he wrote the screenplay for a feature version of the concept with Jeff Rendell (who played the homicidal pilgrim in the trailer), Thanksgiving is finally set to start filming in Toronto next month… and The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Patrick Dempsey of Grey’s Anatomy and Scream 3 is in talks to play the sheriff in the film. A role that was played by Michael Biehn in the faux trailer.
Thanksgiving is finally happening because Spyglass Media stepped in to provide the funding. Roth jumped at the chance to get the movie made, even though it meant having Deadpool‘s Tim Miller take over as director on the reshoots for his video game adaptation Borderlands.
Roth is producing the film with Roger Birnbaum.

The Littlest Hobo is one of the craziest TV shows of all time. If you grew up in Canada during the ’80s and ’90s, you were undoubtedly raised on the adventures of this nameless German Shepherd, who trotted along from town-to-town, helping those in need. Throughout six seasons, the dog rescued children in danger, foiled a Soviet spy plot (yes – he fought the Cold War), prevented a plague outbreak, solved murders and helped innocent folks prove their innocence and more. Here’s the kicker – the dog didn’t have any magic powers or anything dumb like that. He was just a Very good dog, albeit an incredibly intelligent one. It’s a fun piece of Canadian camp nostalgia that’s gained a major cult following in the U.S. Tons of seventies and eighties character actors show up in various episodes, including Leslie Nielsen, DeForest Kelly, Michael Ironside and many more.

Sick as a dog. It’s a dog’s life. Dog-tired. Dog days. In the doghouse. Listen to the idioms and you could well believe that dogs had it rough. (Ruff? – Ed) They don’t. Dogs have it so good, or at least, the smart ones do.
Not the ones so clever they can understand over 50 words and dial the emergency services when you get a concussion, but the ones a step cleverer than that – the dogs who know that true happiness lies in being as dumb as a sack of hammers and of no use as anything other than a warm-bellied draught excluder.
So spare a thought for the guide dogs, police sniffer dogs and avalanche rescue dogs, those poor chumps. Do they know that other dogs don’t have jobs? While they’re up at the crack of dawn, ironing their little dog uniform and clocking in their little dog timecard,...

This isn’t news. This is a public service announcement in the interest of popular morale, a snapshot of a world that once was and could be again, if only we dare to dream.
In 1979, the Canadian Television Network revived 1960s series The Littlest Hobo, a half-hour family show about a German Shepherd dog who drifts around rural Canada helping folk in need. Don’t worry about why the dog does it. We don’t need to know. The desire to have a psychological origin story for every paper boy or nail technician ever to appear on screen is a 21st century weakness. In the 1970s and 80s, TV audiences enjoyed Zen acceptance of outrageous premises from Manimal to Help!… It’s the Hair Bear Bunch! without any irritable reaching after fact and reason. The dog is a good dog. He wants to help. That’s all there is to it.

Sturgill Simpson has surprise-released a second bluegrass album. Cuttin’ Grass Vol. 2 – The Cowboy Arms Sessions arrived early Friday morning with 12 new recordings, including the previously unheard “Hobo Cartoon” — a song written by Simpson and Merle Haggard.
“I wish I was riding a steam train right out of the pages of time,” Simpson sings in the nostalgic tune, which namechecks “The Singing Brakeman” Jimmie Rodgers and Bing Crosby and celebrates the “heyday of the railroad.” “This is a song how the way things used to be/in the script of a hobo cartoon,...

The Boy Who Sold The World is an entertaining look at boy genius Ben Pasternak, a master of the universe in the making (or has he already arrived?). One has to wonder if director Adam Barton got to the game too late or left his story a little too early despite chronicling his subject of the course of several years. The cameras start rolling when mom Amy drops the then-16-year-old Australian boy off at his new high-rise apartment in the heart of New York City. Known for his Apple unboxing videos and his iOS game Impossible Rush, which topped the app store charts, he declines multiple Silicon Valley internships to head to East Coast where venture capitalists throw money at him to develop Flogg, a social network similar for teens to buy and sell goods.

Must Hate Dogs would perhaps be a more fitting title for Lasse Hallström’s peculiar puppy snuff film, A Dog’s Purpose. What other explanation could there be for his decision to allow Josh Gad to gratingly narrate every last shred of affection for our canine chums from cinema-goers’ hearts? A Dog’s Purpose is a schmaltzy mash up of emotional manipulation and kitsch, as one tiny doggy soul wafts from host to host learning inane lessons about humankind and leaving a trail of corpses in its wake.
We open on a snuggly pup, nestled amongst its furry siblings, slowly acclimatising to the sights and sounds of planet earth. We flinch in recognition (and slump in resignation) as we realise that, dear god yes, that is the voice of Frozen’s Olaf trying to sell us on this cutesy, cynically family-friendly feature. He had success voicing Rocket Raccoon in Guardians Of The Galaxy and Bradley Cooper has decided to share his tonsil talents with another member of the animal kingdom. He’s in negotiations to voice the main canine character in Lasse Hallstrom’s A Dog’s Purpose.Adapted from W. Bruce Cameron’s best-seller, the film boasts a cast that includes Dennis Quaid, Britt Robertson, K.J. Apa, Juliet Rylance and Peggy Lipton in the story of a devoted pooch that is reincarnated various times, helps a number of different owners (think The Littlest Hobo, but across the plain of existence, not just the wilds of Canada), always with the driving aim of reuniting with his original human friend. This is one that, like Cameron’s 2010 tear-targeting tome, hops across several lives for the dog as he inhabits different canines. Robertson and Quaid are part of the same timeline, but with...

A look into the making of space opera comic ‘Saga’ and Canada vs. U.S. war story ‘We Stand On Guard’
The world is ruled by women when all male mammals (all but two) die suddenly. A group of teens discover their parents are part of an evil crime organization. War-torn Iraq is seen through the eyes of lions escaped from the Baghdad Zoo. These are just some of the tales spun by Brian K. Vaughan, one of the most compelling, creative, thought-provoking writers in comic books today. Issue #4 of Vaughan’s “We Stand On Guard” hits comic book store shelves today. The mini-series imagines a war between the U.S. and Canada about a century into the future. It centers on 18-year-old Canadian Amber, who’s survived on the run for 12 years when her older brother is captured by the American army. The series will run for a total of six issues, though Vaughan told HitFix that he and artist Steve Skroce “are already talking about what we’re gonna work on next.

One to keep the kids entertained on a rainy afternoon, Max is an amiable enough feature reminiscent of 80’s canine adventure television series The Littlest Hobo. Max, a beautiful german shepherd is the hero here as he leads the humans to uncover a mystery right under their very noses. When his big brother Kyle (Robbie Amell) is killed whilst serving in Afghanistan, surly teenager Justin (Josh Wiggins) finds himself left with his brother’s precision-trained military dog Max after his grieving parents agree to give him a home. Unfortunately most of the plot is given away in the trailer but suffice to say when an old soldier buddy of Kyle’s resurfaces in town, Max is not happy and leads Justin to uncover some unsettling truths about the death of his brother. While the film gets off to a fairly strong start, good premise, cute dog, nice troubled kid/traumatised dog bonding,...

What could be better than an inspirational, heart-warming film that’s all about a dog? Revelations fades up with what sounds like the lead character from Family Guy sitting on some bagpipes. In fact, Dingoes Ate My Baby are concluding their latest set with what seems to be some sort of agonised ode to pain. Lead singer Devon is bypassing the normal laws of clear singing by turning the simple phrase “If I could walk out” into something that can only be translated as “If I could wuuuuunnnggghhh aaaggghhhlluunggghhhh.” It's amazing that Dingoes manage to get regular bookings, given that their lead singer keeps impersonating a constipated horse. Possibly, the Bronze regulars like their singers on the avant-garde side.
This groaning pain shout nicely sets the stage for Revelations, which contains more frenzied barking than a room containing The Littlest Hobo, Scooby-Doo and Shep from Blue Peter. Revelations is all about – well, revelations, if you hadn't guessed. Primarily, the big talking point is that the...

With more than one film bubbling away in his development cauldron, he’s now adding the adaptation of Kate Dicamillo’s novel The Miraculous Journey Of Edward Tulane to the list.If he does end up making the film, it would find the Who Framed Roger Rabbit director back working with bunnies, as Dicamillo’s book, published in 2006, follows the misadventures of a vain china rabbit. I hate writing Top 10s about things, it’s like having to choose your favourite child, they’re all your favourites… except the ginger one (which we’ll cover more in Top 10 Dropped Comics of 2010). I’m choosing from the graphic novels and trades released in 2010, that I’ve purchased so far, so I won’t be waxing lyrical about books I’ve not personally read. On with the show…
1: Richard Stark’s Parker: Book 2 – The Outfit | Idw | W&A: Darwyn Cooke
I’ve always liked noir tales, the sort of story where the “”hero” is a bit of a bastard, and by the close of the final act no one has what they really want, and no one ends up particularly happy with the outcome… except the audience. Stark’s Parker novels are just that sort of story, and Cooke has again proven himself the perfect man to adapt them.

“There's a voice that keeps on calling me. Down the road, that's where I'll always…” No. Hang on… That’s The Littlest Hobo. Let’s try that again. Scrappy mutt Benji is the one planning a cinematic comeback, and he’s got some familiar (and familial) support behind him.Brandon Camp, who last directed Aaron Eckhart/Jennifer Aniston romance-fest Love Happens, is aiming to get his father Joe Camp Jr’s canine creation in front of a fresh audience, sealing a deal with Walden Media to make a new movie and launching a search for the right shelter dog to play the loveable hound. "My fantasy is to find a stray," Camp tells Variety. "The original Benji, the one most of us grew up with, is the look that I'll be going for."First unleashed (sorry) on the world in 1974 by ad man Joe, the tale of Benji has been an underdog (no,...

The Montreal Alouettes may have won the Grey Cup yesterday, but the news on the lips of every Canadian--and everyone around Hollywood--was that Leslie Nielsen had passed away at the age of 84. The actor, who boasted over one hundred television and movie credits, began his career as a serious dramatic actor starring in the likes of "The Forbidden Planet" and "The Poseidon Adventure" as well as appearing in programs such as "Columbo," "Kojak," "M.A.S.H.," "Hawaii Five-o" and "The Man From U.N.C.L.E." (and yes, he even made an appearance on the cult Canadian program "The Littlest Hobo"). Essentially, if you…...

The Littlest Hobo: The Complete Second Season
Stars: London the dog, Chris Makepeace, Keenan Wynn, John Vernon, Cameron Mitchell, DeForest Kelley | Directed by Various
The Littlest Hobo returns to UK DVD with it’s second season courtesy of Mediumrare Entertainment.
For those of you unfamiliar with the classic 80’s TV show, it follows the adventures of a German shepherd that travels from town to town helping those in need and also solving crimes, much like Skippy did in the outback of Australia, and Bruce Banner did in the previous decade in The Incredible Hulk. Once his task is done he moves on to the next town, the strains of the theme tune playing in the background as he does, and what a tune – “Maybe tomorrow I’ll wanna settle down, until tomorrow I’ll just keep moving on”. Classic.

The Littlest Hobo: The Complete First Season
Stars: London the dog, Mike Myers, John Carradine, Clarence Williams III, Michael Ironside, Patrick Macnee, Leslie Nielsen, DeForest Kelley | Directed by Various
Ah… my childhood in the 80’s, a more innocent time, full of Star Wars, Transformers, He-Man and Hobo’s. Littlest Hobo that is! A series more known for it’s theme tune (but what a tune – “Maybe tomorrow I’ll wanna settle down, until tomorrow I’ll just keep moving on”) than it’s episodes, The Littlest Hobo returns to our screens on DVD courtesy of newcomers Mediumrare Entertainment.
Essentially a canine mix of both The Incredible Hulk and Skippy the Bush Kangaroo, The Littlest Hobo follows the adventures of Hobo, a German shepherd that travels from town to town helping those in need and also solving crimes, much like Skippy did in the outback of Australia. Once his task...

The plundering of ancient mythology continues. First Percy Jackson and now Clash of the Titans. The latter is notable for having been accompanied by one of the best trailers I’ve seen for a while. Cutting action shots to music gave the film a sense of epic gravitas, and also appealed to the testosterone-fuelled part of me. It’s a remake of a 1981 film, and apparently it’s faithful in its way. But I’ve not seen it and I don’t intend to. I’ve got a stack of DVDs to check out, including The Littlest Hobo, and a lot of accumulated chocolate to get through. Nostalgia can be fattening. Clash of the Titans is a completely pointless film that turns out to have had the 3D effect slapped on in post production. At least this is my understanding of things. It was set to be released in March,...

Yet another classic TV series from my childhood finally sees the light of day on DVD as Mediumrare Entertainment, a newcomer to the UK DVD market, have announced the release of the first season of beloved 80s television series The Littlest Hobo on Region 2 DVD on April 26th 2010. The release will consist of all 24 episodes from Season One.
Known for the iconic theme song “Maybe Tomorrow”, the series ran from 1979 – 1985 and centered around a stray German Shepherd who wanders from town to town, helping people in need. Similar in concept to Lassie, The Littlest Hobo did not have an owner, and despite the attempts of many people to adopt him, he preferred to be on his own and would head off by himself at the end of each episode… Special Features:
• Singalong – ‘Maybe Tomorrow’
• Short Feature: ‘How to train a dog like London’ by the dog trainer Chuck Eisenmann who...

Connoisseurs of dog-based TV drama will know that The Littlest Hobo was always the cool guy when it came to unusually gifted canines. A rough and ready loner, he'd have kicked Lassie's fluffy, groomed ass in a fight, slept with his girlfriend and then left town without a word (or bark). With no interest in hanging around to 'make friends' or be petted by some obnoxious little brat, he just wanted to head off down the road to another adventure. And he had a better theme tune.
So if you're in the mood for some doggy-themed nostagia, then thanks to Mediumrare Entertainment you can buy the whole first season (24 episodes) on UK DVD from 26th April, and relive those childhood memories (admittedly not always a good thing). There's even a singalong to the theme tune on the discs, for when you're really wasted.
You can pre-order here.
