Now that nearly two years have passed since W.N.B.A. star Brittney Griner served a nine-month sentence for cannabis possession at a Russian penal colony, she has begun speaking out about the suffering she experienced while behind bars. In a New York Times interview, Griner said she felt dehumanized when a guard fastened a chain to her handcuffs, treating her like a dog, and how, in another instance, doctors forced her to undress so they could photograph her nude. In her darkest moments, she contemplated death by suicide.

Since the beginning of the Academy Awards in the late 1920s, Hollywood filmmakers have been making socially conscious films. Many of the best of those have scored the film town’s top honor — Oscar best picture.
This year, that winner could be “Oppenheimer,” a film that boldly and starkly dramatizes the creation of man’s most dangerous invention: atomic weapons.

R&b singer Usher made a musical comeback as the headliner for the Super Bowl Lviii halftime show.
The show included an extensive ensemble of performers made up of dancers, acrobats and a marching band. Usher wasn’t the only star on stage—Alicia Keys, Lil Jon, Ludacris, Will.i.am, H.E.R. and Jermaine Dupri all joined in for the show.
The crowd cheered as Usher and fellow musicians performed their best hits, including “Omg” and “My Boo.” Usher made multiple outfit changes, at one point going shirtless before concluding the show in a bedazzled padding.
Audiences appeared to enjoy the show as it happened live. However, Usher’s performance may have been hindered by Taylor Swift‘s attendance at the game. While Swift did not perform, many fans tuned in to the Super Bowl to watch Swift cheer on her boyfriend,Travis Kelce, of the Kansas City Chiefs.
Longtime Usher fans praised the show.

It looks like wedding bells may be in pop star Usher’s future.
The singer and his longtime girlfriend, Jennifer Goicoechea, obtained a marriage license in Las Vegas last week, according to Clark County court documents obtained by The Hollywood Reporter.
The big news for the couple broke Sunday as Super Bowl Lviii got under way at Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium, where Usher was in the final hours before he was set to perform during the halftime show. There, he was joined onstage by special guests including Alicia Keys, H.E.R., will.i.am, Jermaine Dupri, Ludacris and Lil Jon.
The Nevada court records show that on Thursday, the couple received a certificate of marriage, but has yet to file a marriage license. So, while the first step in their nuptials has been taken, the couple is not yet married.

Usher made a guest appearance at the Black Eyed Peas’ Super Bowl halftime show in 2011, and bandleader will.i.am says he was happy to return the favor Sunday.
Will.i.am performed “Omg” — which he wrote and produced — alongside Usher at both events.
“How can I explain it? There’s no words to really explain that,” he told The Hollywood Reporter after the performance. “Now 13 years later, it means something totally different. It’s beautiful. It was wonderful. It’s fantastic.”
As they performed “Omg,” roller skaters danced and flipped onstage. “The reason I say our section was the most ‘What the F?’ is because we’ve never seen roller skating at any type of big world stage like that. It felt like the urban Olympics. He brought the urban Olympics to the Super Bowl.”

With Taylor Swift in the 65,000-strong crowd at Sunday’s Super Bowl in Las Vegas, Usher couldn’t have had any illusions about who had the greater star power and the media’s attention as he hit the field for the halftime show.
So, battling some initial microphone problems, the slick R&b singer and the producing team of Dps with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation and Jesse Collins leaned in hard to the showmanship that Usher always has done best, and hoped for the best.
Hope was not enough, even when the ripped Usher stripped off his shirt halfway through and H.E.R. came out to offer some solid-gold guitar licks.
In no small part, H.E.R.’s extended stint onstage at Allegiant Stadium unveiled the staid mechanics of Sunday’s halftime show as it was clearly intended mainly to give Usher enough time for a costume change and the...

Usher has returned to one of the biggest stages in music for a headlining performance at the 2024 Super Bowl Halftime Show, which included guest appearances by Lil Jon, Ludacris, Alicia Keys, and more.
Marking the second time Usher has performed at the Halftime Show (thanks to his guest spot during The Black Eyed Peas’ performance in 2011), the pop star took charge at Super Bowl Lviii, taking the stage for a display of gyrating, roller skating, and pop nostalgia. Running through some of his biggest hits — like “My Boo,” “Omg,” “Yeah!” and more — Usher’s showmanship and the energy of his guests carried the performance, almost making up for the fact that the television mix was sub-par.
In addition to Lil Jon, Ludacris, and Keys, Usher was joined by the likes of H.E.R. — who provided a Prince-esque guitar solo — Jermaine Dupri, will.i.am, and more. Watch clips of the performance below.

Usher’s first studio album in six years largely operates as a high-wire homecoming of sorts for the R&b singer. Released two days before his halftime performance at Super Bowl Lviii and following a highly successful Las Vegas residency, Coming Home feels less driven by creative ingenuity or an aesthetic vision than by sheer showmanship. This is further emphasized by the inclusion of the sleepy “Risk It All,” a duet with H.E.R. from the Color Purple soundtrack, and a remix of BTS member Jungkook’s “Standing Next to You,” both of which, thematically and sonically, have little in common with anything else on the album.
Which is to say that the 20-track Coming Home, like many of Usher’s post-Confessions output, is a bit of a bloated mess. For every few colorless duds defined by their embrace of contemporary R&b, such as the overly smooth “Kissing Strangers” or the brassy “Big,...

Post Malone kicked off the 2024 Super Bowl festivities with an impassioned performance of “America the Beautiful” at Allegiant Stadium in Paradise, Nevada.
The Grammy-winning rapper and singer appeared alongside model and dancer Anjel Piñero, who performed the song in American Sign Language (Asl) on behalf of the National Association of the Deaf. Standing solo with an acoustic guitar in hand, Posty delivered a tasteful version of the song, with reverb-washed vocals and a dreamy pedal steel guitar line.
Speaking about the performance with Zane Lowe earlier this week, Malone revealed that he felt “totally out of [his] depth” compared to the evening’s other performers, and said, “I’m just excited and very, very honored to be able to come out and sing these songs with talented people and all of America. I’m excited. I’m nervous. I’m terrified, but I give it the best I got.” Watch the performance below.

Usher opened up about the important lessons that he picked up from conversations with Michael Jackson.
The 45-year-old “Yeah” superstar is a longtime fan of the late King of Pop. He even performed a tribute to Michael back in 2014 and sang at a public memorial for him back in 2009.
They shared some moments together before Michael‘s untimely death, and Usher learned a lot from his time with the “Thriller” icon. He shared what he got from their time together in a new interview.

“It was an admiration of what I do as an entertainer that he offered me,” Usher told The Hollywood Reporter. “He didn’t really say a lot. Whenever we had conversations, they were fairly brief, but what he did tell me is he appreciated the fact that I’m a song-and-dance man and the fact that that’s not an easy thing to do.

While preparing for his Super Bowl halftime performance, Usher achieved another goal: He finished recording his ninth album. Coming Home was released on Friday, two days before he celebrates his 30-year career at the big game.
“Life couldn’t be in a better situation for me right now,” he tells The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s going pretty great.”
The album is a 20-track R&b adventure and features collaborations with Latto, Burna Boy, The-Dream and Pheelz, who appears on the current single “Ruin.” Previously released songs include BTS’ Jungkook, 21 Savage, Summer Walker and H.E.R.
Coming Home is Usher’s first independent project, released through his new label Mega with famed music executive L.A. Reid.
Ahead of his Super Bowl performance, the singer talked to THR about his new album, how he reworked Billy Joel’s “Uptown Girl” to create a new track, the advice that the King of Pop gave him and more.

Fingers crossed that there are no malfunctions for Usher at this year’s Super Bowl!

Usher knows that social media has been buzzing with fantasy playlists about his halftime show performance, while others try to guess which special guests he’ll bring onstage.
He didn’t offer specific details at a press conference in Las Vegas on Thursday, but the singer said he would incorporate elements of his uber-successful Sin City residency, which includes him dancing and singing while skating.
“I was very mindful of my past, celebrating my present, which is here in Las Vegas, and thinking about where we are headed in the future,” he told Apple Music’s Nadeska Alexis onstage. “What songs do people know me for? What songs have been a celebration of [my career]? That was the idea.”
Usher has collaborated with acts like Beyoncé, Lil Wayne, Alicia Keys, Ludacris, Justin Bieber, Jungkook of BTS, J Balvin, Chris Brown, Nicki Minaj, Lil Jon and Jay-Z, who is executive producing the halftime show for a fifth time.

Usher is headlining Sunday’s Super Bowl halftime show, but the superstar admits he previously had thoughts of leaving the music industry.
“I hadn’t had a successful record as successful as [2004’s] Confessions, and there was this analyzing [thought], like, ‘Man, should I continue to do this, or should I pivot and become an actor?'” he tells The Hollywood Reporter.
But the singer pressed on and told himself, “No, I want to do what I really love.” That’s when he launched his residency in Sin City, which became a white-hot success.
“I went to Las Vegas with no promise in a time when the world was not going anywhere because we were in a pandemic, and had the hope that I could arouse people enough to come to Las Vegas and celebrate with me,” he explains. “And it turned into, not only the most successful moments of Las Vegas history,...

Usher has a new collaborator: Kim Kardashian.
The Grammy-winning star appears in new racy photos for the reality star and entrepreneur’s Skims line and he says the partnership was developed to celebrate his new album Coming Home, out on Friday.
“The idea started with the photo that is my album [cover], where I have the peach in my hand. We shot the reverse of that photo, which was the first shot that was released, and therefore, after, as I do support Kim, supporting Skims was the next step,” he tells The Hollywood Reporter. “It really was in conjunction with the album.”
A limited edition, digital download version of Coming Home, with an alternative cover and a bonus track called “Naked,” will be available the first week of release via Skims.com.
Usher says he played Kardashian his new album and called her “a fairy god-a&r.”
“She listened to my album.

Usher is kicking off Super Bowl week with a big collab: a Skims campaign!
“When I was asked to partner with Skims Mens, I was so humbled. [Kim Kardashian]’s been a longtime friend of mine who’s always been so supportive of my work, so the opportunity to collaborate together on a campaign that supports both of our highly anticipated launches made total sense. Launching this campaign ahead of multiple career milestones feels like a full circle moment, with Skims supporting the release of my new album, Coming Home,” Usher said in a statement. “With the way that I move, being this comfortable in what you wear is essential. Skims is about embracing who you are, inside and out, and feeling empowered to express yourself authentically.”

In 2020, Laura Dern celebrated with her very first Oscar win for “Marriage Story”! It was a fitting gift to the veteran actress, who has starred in dozens of quality films throughout her lengthy career. Let’s take a look back at her career by ranking her 16 greatest film performances.
Dern began her career as a teenager close to four decades ago. She seemed to initially aspire to a more normal life but her attempts to finish her college degree at the University of Southern California were continually interrupted by obtaining plum film roles. That she’d eventually settle into an acting career isn’t surprising since her father Bruce Dern is a two time Oscar nominee and her mother Diane Ladd a three time contender
Dern would go on to earn two Oscar nominations of her own for “Rambling Rose” (1991) and “Wild” (2014), plus work steadily in both film and television...
