Sex & Nudity

  • In one of the scenes, the cameraman zooms in on Pam's butt in shorts.
  • Sally's nipples poke through her tank top in pretty much all her scenes, and Pam has a pretty obvious mound in her shorts because they're pulled up so high and tight on her crotch.
  • Pam wears a tight fitting shirt and shorts.

Violence & Gore

  • In the house where Leatherface and his family live, human body parts are found throughout. A couch made out of bones, a chair with human limbs as armrests, and more.
  • Most of The violence is actually all left to the imagination of the viewer, and this is true. Director Tobe Hooper was actually aiming to secure a PG rating by the MPAA.
  • An obviously psychopathic man shows off pictures of slaughtered animal corpses to other characters. They are all disgusted.
  • A woman is hit over the head with a hammer on camera repeatedly. Not very graphic, but disturbing.
  • No injury detail is visible throughout the film besides a small cut. All violence is offscreen.
  • Not as violent as some of the later films in the franchise.
  • Mildly bloody no gore.
  • Compared to other slashers like Friday the 13th or Halloween, The violence is more psychological and disturbing than extremely bloody.
  • A dead armadillo is seen by the side of the road. Unsettling, but hardly any blood.
  • A crazed man cuts his own arm with a straight razor. He then slashes another man's arm.
  • Leatherface kills a man via chainsaw to the chest. Blood is seen splattering onto his apron. However, since the death scene is shot from behind, no gore or injury detail is seen.
  • In one of the film's most infamous scenes, Leatherface suddenly pops out from a door and hits a man across the face with a sledgehammer. The man is seen on the ground, before he is dragged away into a room and presumably killed offscreen. The scene comes out of nowhere, and is still violent although no gore is used.
  • A woman's body is found stuffed inside an ice box. She lunges out at a man who passes by, before Leatherface shoves her back in.
  • By the end, one of the protagonists is covered in blood.
  • A woman's thumb is bleeding and an old man sucks the blood.
  • Leatherface's mask is an actual person's face, dried after having been removed by him. The removal nor making of the mask is shown.

Profanity

  • Man says "what the f*"k was she doing there."
  • 1 hard to hear use of sh*t
  • 10 uses of damn, 1 use of son of a bitch, and goddamn. 4 uses of bitch.
  • Name calling (nap-haired idiots, bitch hog, hippie, fool, etc.)

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Drugs, recreational: None
  • Smoking: None
  • Wine and liquor are shown in the background.
  • In one of the first scenes in the movie, a man appears to be drunk.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The camera very slowly backs away from a desecrated gravestone. On the gravestone is a rotting corpse that was stolen from one of the graves. Similar to the mothers corpse from psycho
  • Widely considered one of the scariest movies ever made. Contains intense horror and nightmarish atmosphere throughout the entirety of the film.
  • This film was actually originally aimed to receive a PG rating, and even though the movie was temporarily banned in a few places, it's a very tame movie, most of the violence is left to the imagination, or no gore in the kills. It favours on suspense, and psychological terror.
  • The dinner scene is full of terrified screaming, evil laughter, and horrifying dialogue.
  • The original Texas Chain Saw Massacre is old and grainy, giving it the unique and horrifying feel of realism that it is infamous for
  • Some of the scenes in which the characters are trapped in Leatherface's house are intense and disturbing, the floors are littered with chicken feathers and human bones and Leatherface has furniture made from human bones lining his house as well
  • Overall, the tone of the film is very dark and genuinely scary, even by modern standards.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Violence & Gore

  • Despite the film's title, only one person is killed with a chainsaw but is shown offscreen. Most of the kills are offscreen or obscured.
  • A woman is impaled alive on a meat hook. No gore but disturbing.
  • A man is run over by a truck.
  • Leatherface's own chainsaw falls and slices his leg. A bit of blood pours out.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The amount of blood is relatively minimal and most of the onscreen violence is obscured. The film relies more on atmosphere and tension to unsettle viewers. The most disturbing part of the film is near the end, in which a character is intimidated and tormented over the course of what is implied to be several hours and lasts for 10 minutes.
  • There is a scene where hundreds of daddy long leg spiders are crawling around.
  • A live woman is impaled and hung on a slaughterhouse hook through her back. She writhes in pain but no blood is shown.
  • The last 20 minutes of the film are intense, as a woman is chased by Leatherface wielding the chainsaw (very long scene) she is taken into his house, Although she escapes, this is probably one of the most disturbing moment.
