After years of delays and creative team changes, filming on Indiana Jones 5 has finally been completed. And yet, we still don’t have a single official publicity photo from the movie. Heck, we don’t even have a title! What do we have to do to get a new look at Indy? Swipe an idol from its pedestal without disrupting the weight balance? Cross a seemingly invisible bridge? Find a crashed alien ship?
Well, while it’s not quite as exciting as a knight’s tomb declaring “X marks the spot,” director James Mangold did give us a bit of a hint on Twitter this week. “Although I’ve been cutting while shooting, I officially start editing Indy today!” Mangold tweeted. He went on to assure “all those asking about trailers and teasers, still drops and first looks and other peeks or sneaks,” that information will be coming, but...

Outside of the dragon Sisu, Tuk Tuk might be the most adorable thing in Raya and the Last Dragon. Technically a fantasy creature who is half-armadillo and half-pug, this hybrid beastie embodies pure fairy tale fun in Walt Disney Animation Studios‘ latest adventure. And with his nifty hard shell acting as a giant unicycle upon which our heroine Raya gets around desert wastelands, we are sure kids are already wishing they could have a Tuk Tuk of their own.
It’s a nifty design, but what might surprise a lot of folks is the voice beneath the hard shell and cuddly countenance. Yes that’s right, Tuk Tuk is voiced by a real person, and those vocals belong to one of fan culture’s most beloved actors: Alan Tudyk.

The Western used to be one of the biggest – if not the biggest – genres in Hollywood, with tons of A-list stars and acclaimed filmmakers getting in on the fun. Nowadays, of course, we don’t see too many Westerns anymore, though every once in a while a gem like Django Unchained, 3:10 to Yuma or the True Grit remake will pop up and remind us of why they’re so enjoyable.
Of course, many modern takes on the genre have tried to put their own spin on the tropes as well, with everything from big budget blockbuster The Lone Ranger to disappointing comic book adaptation Jonah Hex and even the animated Rango all attempting something new. Which didn’t always work out, but it’s still nice to see filmmakers trying to apply a fresh coat of paint to one of Hollywood’s oldest genres.

The Western used to be the biggest and most popular genre in Hollywood, reigning supreme for decades as almost every A-list star and respected filmmaker journeyed to the Old West. Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be as much interest in producing them as there used to be, but we have seen plenty of recent gems like Django Unchained, 3:10 to Yuma, the True Grit remake and Open Range.
Instead of taking the old-fashioned route, a lot of modern Westerns have also sought to put their own twist on the tropes of the genre to decidedly mixed results, whether it be action blockbuster The Lone Ranger, comic book adaptation Jonah Hex, the animated Rango, the blood-soaked Red Hill, the star-studded Magnificent Seven update or South Korean Spaghetti Western The Good, the Bad, the Weird. All of them brought something interesting to the table, but not all were successful.

Before the dusty down-and-out protagonist is ready to give up on life in “Yuma,” one of Justin Townes Earle’s earliest songs, he calls his mom. “There ain’t nothing I fear,” he tells her, “so much as being alone.” Released in 2007, ”Yuma” is astonishing in its emotional tenderness, a song ostensibly about a young man who decides to kill himself that is actually a meditation on what it means to accept someone else’s pain. As he calls home to beg for forgiveness for what he’s about to do,...

The Notebook Primer introduces readers to some of the most important figures, films, genres, and movements in film history.Above: The Great Train RobberyThe western has been around since nearly the advent of cinema. Some of Thomas Edison’s earliest films incorporated standard conventions of the genre, established in preceding works of popular fiction, and other key tropes were solidified in Edwin S. Porter’s pioneering The Great Train Robbery (1903). Primarily originating on the East Coast, American motion picture production soon made its general migration west where the geographic consequences only amplified the form, enticing the likes of producers and directors including Thomas Ince and Cecil B. DeMille. The western swiftly flourished as an exuberant, manifold survey of idealized, often exaggerated themes concerning heroism, progress, and the myth of the American dream. The genre became a beloved compendium of cultural dichotomies, iconic symbols, locations, and character types, evincing countless variations alongside the tried and true.

We’re only just over halfway through July, but let’s hop ahead a couple of weeks into the future and take a look at what’s coming to Hulu in August. Next month will see the streaming service add an enormous list of movies and TV shows, with numerous classics amongst them, and everyone from horror to action to romance fans and even family audiences should be pleased with what’s coming.
The first day of the month, for example, brings the opening installments in two major horror franchises that kicked off in the late 80s – 1987’s Hellraiser and 1988’s Child’s Play. Sticking with the 80s, August 1st likewise sees 1986’s Top Gun added to the library, too. Not to mention 1981’s My Bloody Valentine.

It seems hard to believe, but Christian Bale has been a regular fixture on our screens for over 30 years, having gotten his big break playing the lead role in Steven Spielberg’s 1987 war drama Empire of the Sun, and in the decades since he’s gone on to firmly establish himself as one of the greatest actors of his generation, if not one of the best ever.
The famously committed 46 year-old is notoriously picky about the projects he signs on to, which makes his impending Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as the villain of Thor: Love and Thunder so exciting. Not only does it mark his first venture into comic book territory since headlining the Dark Knight Trilogy, but it’ll also be the first time he’s appeared in any non-Batman blockbuster since 2009’s poorly-received Terminator Salvation.

Whether or not the world needs another Indiana Jones sequel is up for debate, but regardless, we’re getting one in the near future. Long expected to be the final installment, wrapping up star Harrison Ford’s turn as the title archeologist, there was never any doubt that director Steven Spielberg would be at the helm. Well, that changed this week, as reports have indicated that he won’t be directing Indiana Jones 5 (or whatever it ends up being called). Rather than leading to a search for a replacement, which could have jeopardized the starting date, the powers that be, Spielberg likely included, have come up with their first choice to take over behind the camera, and it’s James Mangold. For those unaware, Mangold is most recently the director of the Academy Award winner Ford v Ferrari, which took home two tech category Oscars, in addition to being nominated in Best Picture.

Matt Damon reteams with Ford v Ferrari director James Mangold for The Force, a movie about NYPD corruption and dirty cops.
James Mangold has a knack for reteaming with his best leading men to phenomenal results. Working with Hugh Jackman on The Wolverine paved the way for Logan, one of the finest superhero films ever produced, and 3:10 to Yuma in turn led to Mangold and Christian Bale reteaming for Ford v Ferrari, a slick drama for adults that just got nominated for the Oscars’ Best Picture. Another great Samuel Fuller film on Blu-ray — this one is a crime tale set in downtown Los Angeles’ Little Tokyo, that forms an interracial romantic triangle. It’s risky for its year because of the sexual dynamics — a Japanese-American man falls in love with a Caucasian woman. Fuller’s approach is years ahead of its time, even if Columbia’s sales job was a little weird.

California Woman Gets 50 Years for Murdering Olympic Medalist Husband Who She Accused of Beating Her
The widow of a 1984 Olympic medalist was sentenced Tuesday to at least 50 years in prison for his 2009 murder, People has confirmed. The sentence came nearly five months after Jane Laut, 59, was found guilty of the first-degree premeditated murder of her husband, Dave Laut, who was found shot to death in the yard of their Oxnard, California, home on Aug. 27, 2009. Dave Laut, a 52-year-old athletic director at Hueneme High School in Oxnard and a bronze medalist in shot put, was shot five times with a .22 caliber handgun, authorities have said. The last bullet was fired into the back of his head.

This is the actual view from Savant Central, looking due North.
What a year! I was able to take one very nice trip back East too see Washington D.C. for the first time, or at least as much as two days' walking in the hot sun and then cool rain would allow. Back home in Los Angeles, we've had a year of extreme drought -- my lawn is looking patriotically ratty -- and we're expecting something called El Niño, that's supposed to be just shy of Old-Testament build-me-an-ark intensity. We withstood heat waves like those in Day the Earth Caught Fire, and now we'll get the storms part. This has been a wild year for DVD Savant, which is still a little unsettled. Sam Fuller's superior western classic stars Rod Steiger, Brian Keith, Charles Bronson and Sarita Montiel, and takes on a tall stack of potent issues. A Reb sharpshooter denies the South's defeat, and goes west to join the Sioux nation where he can continue his war against the Yankees. This spin on 'The Man Without a Country' is one of Fuller's best thanks to a generous budget, unflinching action violence and committed performances. Hondo (1953), which is set to play June 13 - July 4 at the Museum of Modern Art as part of their "3-D Summer" series, was John Wayne's first Western in three years. It was produced by his own Wayne/Fellows Productions (later named Batjac), founded just the year prior by Wayne and producer Robert Fellows. And James Edward Grant, who had already written several Wayne features and had a particular flair for writing classic John Wayne dialogue, penned the screenplay. All told, one gets the sense that everything about this exemplary return to the genre was a carefully conscious decision by the iconic American star. Hondo is a definitive Western. Moreover, it's a definitive John Wayne Western. When Wayne made Hondo, his masculine persona was already firmly established. After viewing the film at one point, Wayne supposedly declared, "I'll be damned if I'm not the stuff men are made of." Such a comment,...

A photograph of Samuel Fuller in "the shack."
It is always well to remember that documentaries are first of all films like other films, meaning that no less than fictional narrative movies, they too have a narrative shaped by the vision of their maker and are not only about their subjects but also are that vision and the individual elements that make it up. So, in A Fuller Life there are a number of choices that Samantha Fuller as director has made, for example to film in “the shack”—the bungalow her father kept as office and filled with his memorabilia from his days as a crime reporter, an infantryman in WWII, a writer and filmmaker; or to use her “readers” (including both actors—mostly from Fuller’s movies—and some well-chosen directors) dramatically, effectively acting their readings from Fuller’s posthumous autobiography A Third Face; or, very simply, to...

Legendary Spanish-born international film and music icon has died Sara Montiel, also known as either Sarita Montiel or, at times, Saritisima, was one of the Spanish-speaking world's biggest stars. She died on Monday, April 8, apparently of "natural causes" at her house in Madrid's district of Salamanca. She was 85 years old. Earlier today, a cortege driving through the streets of Madrid was attended (and applauded) by thousands of mourning fans. Montiel was born on March 10, 1928; according to online sources, her birth name was María Antonia Alejandra Vicenta Elpidia Isadora Abad Fernández; her father was a small farmer and her mother was beauty products salesperson. She left behind her poverty-stricken childhood, spending her days in the streets of her small village while dreaming of Spanish film star Imperio Argentina, after moving to Madrid in her mid-teens. Diction and singing lessons followed. Eventually, she started appearing in films, landing two roles in 1944 releases:...

Games that encourage tactical combat are always something to be fairly cautious of. Matches you enter force you to witness the reality of being able to “Lone Wolf” your way through enemies, objectives, and the result of ridiculously high experience gains. It feels that at the heart of many games claiming tactical combat and communication are key, few accomplish anything other than making it an option, rather than a necessity. In order to dominate in Ghost Recon Future Soldier, you need to prepare, plan, and execute. I’m happy to report that while there may be flaws in its present state, it is still a beta, and Ghost Recon Future Soldier is aiming to make tactical combat and teamwork a necessity for victory.
Ghost Recon Future Soldier offers a variety of play styles and customization options in order to help prepare for battle. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves though.

"Dan Callahan's Barbara Stanwyck: The Miracle Woman is a serious book about a serious woman, less a biography of an actress than a biography of her career," writes Scott Eyman in the Wall Street Journal. "Mr Callahan follows her choices of roles and tries to capture what she was saying about herself through her acting. It was an astonishing career, whose impressive outlines only became clear in retrospect. Most actors want to be loved — it's the Achilles' heel of the profession — but Stanwyck seems to have been after something else: respect."
Introducing his interview with Dan Callahan at the L, Mark Asch notes that "Dan concludes that Stanwyck was the most open, raw, unshowy and affectless of the Golden Age movie queens, in both her performances and offscreen attitudes; he builds a compelling personal narrative out of her contradictions: her bootstrapping tough-broad self-sufficiency (this slum kid was a...

In the senior citizen ratings smackdown of the year, Betty White stomped George Segal and Jessica Walter as TV Land unleashed the second season of Hot in Cleveland and revealed new comedy Retired at 35.
Hot delivered a healthy 2.9 million viewers (here’s Tanner Stransky’s recap). As expected, that’s down quite a bit from the sitcom’s record-setting 4.8 million series premiere last year, but still in line with how the show was performing later on. Retired, about a guy who moves in with his retired parents (Segal and Walter) in Florida, lost 31% of its Hot lead-in, delivering 2 million viewers.

Terrence Malick's The New World doesn't have fans, just fanatics – John Patterson among them. He explains the purity and beauty of this bottomless movie, which came and went in a month in the middle of the decade
This decade hasn't been up to much, movie-wise, but I am more than ever convinced that when every other scrap of celluloid from 2000-2009 has crumbled to dust, one film will remain, like some Ozymandias-like remnant of transient vanished glory in the desert. And that film is The New World, Terrence Malick's American foundation myth, which arrived just as the decade reached its dismal halfway point, in January 2006.
It's been said that The New World doesn't have fans: it has disciples and partisans and fanatics. I'm one of them, and my fanaticism burns undimmed 30 or more viewings later. The New World is a bottomless movie, almost unspeakably beautiful and formally harmonious.
