Van Johnson steps into adventure-guy shoes more suitable for Humphrey Bogart in this European-shot thriller. Daring Martine Carol provides the sex appeal as the mystery dame who entices Johnson to smuggle a man out of Red Albania. The movie is practically a proto- James Bond film: it’s directed by Terence Young, includes Sean Connery and Anthony Dawson in the cast list, and features a fight in a gypsy camp. But Herbert Lom steals the show from them all as a monocle-wearing, oversexed gypsy bandit who can’t abide Commies. Oh, and the disc has special treat in store for discerning, high-toned art-movie intellectuals: this is the film’s hotter Continental version.

Ahead of the 100-year anniversary of the discovery of King Tut’s tomb, Storied Media Group has acquired the production and sponsorship rights to a large archeological excavation in Egypt’s Valley of the Kings, to begin in September, led by renowned Egyptologist and archaeologist Dr. Zahi Hawass. The project is being pitched to multiple networks as a docuseries and possible live-event special. Storied Media Group was selected by Egypt’s Ministry of Antiquities to document the event.
The focus of the excavations will be an area near the tomb of the Golden King Tutankhamun — known as Kv 62 — and an area near the tomb of King Merenptah, according to Hawass. This is the first time that there has been excavation within yards of King Tut’s tomb based on promising scans of the area. King Tutankhamun was a minor king, a mere teenager with a relatively short reign. And yet...

It was recently announced that Lucasfilm would once again be teaming up with Steven Spielberg and Harrison Ford for Indiana Jones 5. During his cinematic adventures thus far, Indy has gone after the Ark of the Covenant, tracked down a stolen sacred stone, found the Holy Grail, and uncovered an alien UFO.
The last Indiana Jones movie was set in 1957. I imagine Indiana Jones 5 will be set either in the '60s or '70s. There are a number of adventures that Indy could find himself in, but what’s next for the adventurous archeologist? Officially, we’ll have to wait and see — but in the meantime, here’s a list of mysterious archeological discoveries and legends that could spark Indiana Jones on his next adventure.
I will say that a lot of these are in North America because I think it would be cool to see Dr. Jones...

ITV is working on a new event series based around the discovery of Tutankhamun.
The four-part drama - from The Bletchley Circle writer Guy Burt - will tell the compelling true story of how Howard Carter came to discover the tomb of Ancient Egypt's boy-king.
Carter's incredible story will begin in 1905 as he leads an expedition to find lost treasures in Egypt's Valley of the Kings.
However, he finds himself living rough when his license to dig is revoked, and he is forced to sell his previous finds in order to survive.
An unlikely friendship with a British aristocrat named Lord Carnavon brings Carter back to archaeology, and helps him make one of the most significant discoveries of the modern age.
The drama will be executive produced by ITV Studios' Creative Director of Drama, Francis Hopkinson, who has previously worked on Home Fires, Jekyll & Hyde and Wallander.

Washington, April 29: Excavations by Egyptologists from the University of Basel, close to the royal tombs in the Egyptian Valley of the Kings, have led to the identification of the burial place of several children as well as other family members of two pharaohs.
Basel Egyptologists of the University of Basel Kings' Valley Project have been working on tomb Kv 40 in the Valley of the Kings close to the city of Luxor for three years.
From the outside, only a depression in the ground indicated the presence of a subterranean tomb. Up to now, nothing was known about the layout of tomb Kv 40 nor for whom it was build and.

At least 50 mummies have been discovered in a tomb at the Valley of the Kings in Egypt (above).
50 Mummies Found In Egyptian Tomb
Archaeologists recently unearthed the mummified remains of tens of royal Egyptians – from princes and princesses to infants – while excavating a ruin, reported Live Science. From hieratic inscriptions, the archaeologists were able to deduce that those buried in the tomb descended from 14th century B.C.E. pharaohs Thutmose IV and Amenhotep III.
The Valley of the Kings has been a popular dig site for archaeologists for a number of decades. Over 300 miles south of Cairo, the location served as the burial spot for Egyptian royalty during the country’s New Kingdom (1550-1070 B.C.E.). Among the most famous discoveries in the Valley of the Kings was the tomb of King Tutankhamun.

Eleanor Parker today: Beautiful as ever in Scaramouche, Interrupted Melody Eleanor Parker, who turns 91 in ten days (June 26, 2013), can be seen at her most radiantly beautiful in several films Turner Classic Movies is showing this evening and tomorrow morning as part of their Star of the Month Eleanor Parker "tribute." Among them are the classic Scaramouche, the politically delicate Above and Beyond, and the biopic Interrupted Melody, which earned Parker her third and final Best Actress Academy Award nomination. (Photo: publicity shot of Eleanor Parker in Scaramouche.) The best of the lot is probably George Sidney’s balletic Scaramouche (1952), in which Eleanor Parker plays one of Stewart Granger’s love interests — the other one is Janet Leigh. A loose remake of Rex Ingram’s 1923 blockbuster, the George Sidney version features plenty of humor, romance, and adventure; vibrant colors (cinematography by Charles Rosher); an elaborately staged climactic swordfight; and tough dudes...

The Google Doodle is celebrating another birthday Wednesday, May 9 - the 138th birthday of Howard Carter, the man who discovered the tomb of 14th century BC pharaoh Tutankhamun, a.k.a. King Tut.
Carter was born in London, England May 9, 1874 and at the young age of 17 was sent out by the Egypt Exploration Fund to help excavate and record tombs, as Carter was quite a skilled artist and could replicate the tomb decorations that they discovered.
In 1899, Carter was appointed the first chief inspector of the Egypt Antiquities and went on to work for George Herbert, 5th Earl of Carnarvon, who was the financial backer in the search for King Tut's tomb. The search appeared fairly fruitless and Carnarvon was becoming frustrated, but on Nov. 4, 1922, the excavation team found the steps leading to the tomb, which turned out to be the most intact and best preserved tomb in the Valley of the Kings.

When it comes to the story of the eight-year-old boy king, the classic tale never gets old, no matter how many versions are made. The Curse of King Tutankhamen's Tomb whisks you off to November 1922, where 48-year-old struggling archaeologist Howard Carter (Robin Ellis), who has already spent six years at an Egyptian dig in the Valley of Kings, is desperate to find something. Fortune, it seems at the beginning, blesses him when he discovers the tomb of Tutankhamen, one of Egypt’s youngest pharaohs. However, the rumours of an ancient curse, foreshadowing grief and disaster, threaten to mar his triumph...
The storyline is obviously good and, once you read the plot synopsis, lures you into watching it. However, if you’re really into Ancient Egyptians, then you might be in for a disappointed evening after watching this DVD.
The opening doesn’t live up to the précis, and fails to hook you in immediately.
