Two of the most famous characters Audrey Hepburn ever played were Eliza Dolittle and Maid Marion. In StudioCanal’s new 4K restoration home entertainment release of The Lavender Hill Mob, Audrey Hepburn shares her first film with Stanley Holloway, who played Eliza’s father in My Fair Lady, and Robert Shaw, who played the Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin & Marion. Not that Audrey Hepburn actually shares the screen in The Lavender Hill Mob with either Stanley Holloway or Robert Shaw, but she does get the film off to a bright start with a nuzzle with Alec Guinness The Lavender Hill Mob arrived in the middle of the golden era of the Ealing Comedy cycle, two years after Kind Hearts and Coronets and just four years before The Ladykillers. [Editor’s note: The following interview contains some spoilers for “The First Omen.”]
In the final act of Richard Donner’s iconic 1976 horror feature “The Omen,” star Gregory Peck — driven almost mad by the realization this his adopted son Damien is probably the Antichrist — heads to the Italian cemetery where Damien’s cursed biological mother is said to be buried. When he cracks open her grave, he’s not entirely surprised to find, not the skeleton of a young woman, but of a large jackal. After all, he’s already been told Damien is the product of a satanic breeding ritual between the devil himself and a willing female jackal.
What Arkasha Stevenson’s prequel feature “The First Omen” presupposes is: What if Damien’s mother wasn’t actually a jackal? In the pantheon of horror classic remakes and reimaginings — like “Halloween” and “The Exorcist,” to name some recent offerings — it’s a hell of a starting point. A smart one,...

Katy O’Brian is about to be a big star — and for audiences who check out Rose Glass’ “Love Lies Bleeding,” in which the actress stars alongside Kristen Stewart in an audacious, sexy, unpredictable mash-up of body horror, crime thriller, and love story, that concept will prove to be literally true by the film’s wild end. But she’s not slipping into any Hollywood starlet habits just yet.
Case in point: O’Brian signed on to our Zoom interview a full five minutes early this week (practically unheard of!), and offered to spend our extra time “just chatting.” And O’Brian, whose pre-acting resumes includes everything from bodybuilding to a seven-year stint as a police officer in her native Indiana, is a very good conversationalist.

Audrey Hepburn is the absolute definition of classic Hollywood. The star of beloved films such as "Roman Holiday" and the criminally underseen "Wait Until Dark," she became the embodiment of the term movie star for decades until her passing in 1993. Perhaps no single movie embodies the greatness of Hepburn more than 1961's "Breakfast at Tiffany's." Based on Truman Capote's novel of the same name, director Blake Edwards helped turn Hepburn's Holly Golightly into a cinematic icon. Yet, amazingly enough, it's a role that Hepburn very nearly passed on.
Speaking to The New York Times in 1960, the actress discussed her role as a New York City socialite who was looking to marry a rich man only to find herself smitten by a writer. In the interview, Hepburn, who was coming off of "The Nun's Story" and "The Unforgiven," explained that she didn't believe she was right for the part. It...

Although he has personally competed for the Best Picture Oscar as a qualifying producer of just four films, Martin Scorsese is responsible for directing 10 of the top Academy Award category’s nominees, including 2024 contender “Killers of the Flower Moon.” This recent improvement upon his total makes him only the third filmmaker in Oscars history to helm a double-digit amount of Best Picture nominees. Including him, six people who were already credited with directing at least one nominee rose higher in the ranks this year.
The previous Scorsese films that vied for Best Picture are 2007 winner “The Departed” (for which he earned his sole directing trophy) and nominees “Taxi Driver” (1977), “Raging Bull” (1981), “Goodfellas” (1991), “Gangs of New York” (2003), “The Aviator” (2005), “Hugo” (2012), “The Wolf of Wall Street” (2014), and “The Irishman” (2020). There are films you watched every time they pop up on TCM or streaming services. It’s like visiting an old friend. These movies put a smile on your face and a song in your heart. And one such film is “Charade,” which celebrates its 60th anniversary on Dec. 5. Deftly directed by Stanley Donen from a fun and thrilling Peter Stone screenplay, “Charade” stars Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn who exude a William Powell/Myrna Loy style chemistry that leaps off the screen. And let’s not forget that gorgeous Henry Mancini score, the romantic Oscar-nominated title tune “Charade,” with lyrics by Johnny Mercer and the pulsating Saul Bass title sequence.
I saw “Charade” when it was released, and I’ve probably seen it at least 15 more times. And each time seems like the first. Not many films have that kind of power. A 2010 Criterion Collection article by film historian...

If you ask people what their favorite movie endings are, they will most likely tell you an ending that has some sort of big twist, a big set piece, or a major display of emotional catharsis, be it the two lovers deciding to be together or them opting for a painful, tear-filled goodbye. However, sometimes it is the quietest endings that can be the most impactful, where restraint is the only way to properly convey what the filmmaker wants to get across. One of my favorite endings of all time — William Wyler's "Roman Holiday" — uses this tactic to perfection. It sets up with nearly two hours of a buoyant, lovely romance between Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck, and in the final scene, their separation cannot be addressed in the public forum in which it is set, meaning their bittersweet parting can only de done through glances and innuendo.

f it was the summer of the megawatt blockbusters “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer,” September has turned into a month of sequelitis with “The Nun 2,” “Equalizer 3” and “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3.” Even Kenneth Branagh’s “A Hunting in Venice,” is the third installment in the actor/director’s Hercule Poirot mystery series. It’s all a bit of a snooze. That wasn’t the case 70 years ago this month.
There were some oddball films that were released September, 1953 including “Cat-Women of the Moon” with Sonny Tufts and Marie Windsor and “The Sins of Jezebel” starring Paulette Goddard. But 70 years ago, audiences were introduced to a new wide-screen format and young actress who would become one of the biggest stars of the 1950s and ‘60s and Clark Gable returning to a role he originated in 1932.

Martin Scorsese is one of the greatest movie makers of all time, with titles such as “Taxi Driver,” “Raging Bull,” “Goodfellas,” and “The Irishman.” The Academy Awards think that highly of him, too. Marisa Tomei was more than reluctant to shed her locks for 1994 film “Only You.”
Tomei, who plays a hopeless romantic determined to find her soulmate, a man identified by her Ouija board when she was a teen, had a major fashion moment onscreen with a stylish bob haircut, starting a trend upon the film’s release in 1994. Robert Downey Jr., Bonnie Hunt, and Billy Zane co-star in the beloved rom-com.
Emmy-winning costume designer Nicoletta Ercole, who also worked on fellow Italy-set productions like “Letters to Juliet,” “Under the Tuscan Sun,” and “My House in Umbria,” recently told IndieWire that Tomei had to be convinced to change up her style.
“Marisa, at the beginning, she arrived right after she won [the Oscar] for ‘My Cousin Vinny.’ She had very long hair,” Ercole explained. “I said, ‘Why can’t you cut it? Like this, it’s normal. It’s nothing special.'”

The 1953 romantic comedy may lack heft but the Oscar-winner’s charming lead turn makes it an escape worth taking again
When Roman Holiday was released, 70 summers ago, the monarchy was having a fashionable moment. Two months before, the world had watched the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, a relatively young, glamorous face for a fusty institution: the first such event to be globally televised, it made the very principle of royalty seem less like the realm of ancient history. I say “relatively”: the frilly pomp and ceremony of English royalty can’t have been much sexier in 1953 than it was in 2023, though at least they didn’t have official broad-bean quiche to contend with.
There was certainly ample scope for Hollywood to prettify the notion a bit, which is where Roman Holiday proved most fortuitously timed. A romantic comedy that set a quasi-fantasy template for the genre that has...

Love is when the other person’s happiness is more important than your own.
H. Jackson Brown, Jr.
Human beings live in societies whether they like it or not. Some people like being in their society, while others hate being in theirs. And then there is a third group of people who stay silent by trying their best to fit in. Our protagonist Shu (Liang Cuishan) belongs to this group. Shu is someone who seems to fit well in her society. She is a devoted partner to her fiancé. She leads a mundane life and takes care of him in a dutiful manner as scripted by society. But what happens when someone living in this kind of bubble gets out, finds happiness outside her comfort zone, cherishes every moment of it and soon realizes that the past few years of her life might be a mistake?...

As a genre, romantic comedies are not known for having a particularly strong relationship to reality. Many of the most beloved films in the genre are heightened absurdities, relying on wild coincidences and fairy tale-esque logic to carry their love stories. But for all the silly screwballs and unbelievable farces in the romcom sphere, there’s a subcategory of the genre that tops them all in terms of absurd lack of realism: the royalty rom-com.
In a royal romantic comedy, one of the leads is a member of a royal family, universally a prince or a princess. The royal family member, whose country of rule is typically either completely made up or left unnamed, falls in love with a commoner or someone generally not of their station, and the main conflict comes from how they can circumnavigate the gaping class differences. Many of these movies often feel like live-action Disney Princess films,...

It's hard to believe it's been 70 years since Fred Zinneman's "From Here to Eternity" came out. Not that we were all there of course, but time has been really kind to the all-star, Best Picture-winning drama. Unlike many of the rah-rah war films emerging from America during and post-World War II, "From Here to Eternity" argues not that war is hell — since most of the movie takes place during peace time — but that men, even in the army, are subconsciously determined to make life hell whether there's a war on or not.

Despite only appearing in 34 films, Hepburn’s talent and natural beauty made her a true Hollywood legend. Although she started her career as a ballet dancer, and later a model, Hepburn quickly transitioned into acting. As most streamers neglected to put much stock in their film libraries, one has stood out from the rest of the pack: Paramount+.
As the streaming wars hit a fever pitch over the last few years, the budgets for splashy originals expanded. To make room in the budget, streamers looked to cull their library of licensed titles. The influence of classic movies on modern culture is immense, and there remains a high demand for these timeless works, which is why many in the industry viewed Warner Bros. Discovery’s move to lay off key executives and otherwise reduce staffing at Turner Classic Movies with such alarm.
Parrot Analytics’ demand data — which takes into account consumer research, streaming, downloads and social media, among other engagement — allowed us to compile a list of the top 10 most sought-after movies released before 1970, which form a substantial part of TCM’s catalog.
These movies all achieved outstanding demand levels within the first five months of 2023, above the 97th percentile for the U.S. market. This suggests that despite a market saturated with modern blockbusters and franchises, classic films still command substantial attention from audiences. For streaming services, a quality library of such films contributes to retention. Warner’s Max streaming service has a TCM hub,...

Romance is getting the royal touch in the first trailer for the long-awaited adaptation of Casey McQuiston’s book “Red, White, & Royal Blue.”
The trailer certainly makes a point of laying out the various peaks and valleys of the plot, introducing Alex Claremont-Diaz (Taylor Zakhar Perez), the son of the President of the United States (Uma Thurman) and Britain’s Prince Henry (Nicholas Galitzine). After an international incident involving a wedding cake happens the two are forced to engage in a staged friendship. But the more time they spend together the pair realizes that what started as animosity is turning to love.
The bright, colorful tone, coupled with its adaptation bona fides makes it look akin to other Prime Video fare like “The Summer I Turned Pretty.” There’s also a healthy dose of 1953’s “Roman Holiday,” especially with this film’s emphasis on a royal deciding between love...

In the very early days of prestige television, a series appeared (some say it began the prestige era) that gave us a glimpse of what the future would hold. That series was "Rome," the story of the rise and fall of Julius Caesar (Ciarán Hinds) and the romance and death of Mark Antony (James Purefoy) and Cleopatra (Lyndsey Marshal). The series was gorgeous and full of rich historical detail, and the performances were spectacular.
The series, which ran from 2005-2007, came to us from John Milius, William J. MacDonald, and Bruno Heller. It nabbed talented actors like Hinds, Purefoy, Marshal, Lindsay Duncan, Polly Walker, Tobias Menzies, Kevin McKidd, and the late Ray Stevenson. It won a Director's Guild award, seven Primetime Emmy Awards, and quite a number of others.

Presidents of the United States (both sitting and former) have won. So have former Beatles. And a First Lady. And a lot of other unlikely movie types. The truth is, with so many Primetime Emmy Awards handed out – well over 100 annually – it’s easy for some intriguing victors in both the deeper past and more recently to slip through the cracks.
So as a public service, here are a few dozen-plus Emmy winners you may have missed.
Barack Obama – Yes, our 44th President took home an Emmy trophy in 2022 as best narrator for an episode of the doc series “Our Great National Parks.” He thus became the second President to be so honored. Italy’s Cinecittà studios have returned to profit one year ahead of the schedule set in its 2022 to 2026 industrial plan, aimed at returning the facility to its former glory as a major international filming hub.
It is the first time the complex’s results have been in the black since it was taken back under state control in 2017, after being run into the ground under private ownership for more than two decades.
Parent body Cinecittà S.p.A announced a $1.9 million (1.8 million euros) net profit for 2022, and a doubling of turnover to $42.3 million (39 million euros) against 2021, mainly on the back of a raft of bookings for the facilities.
The company said the complex had been booked to above 75% capacity in 2022, against 31% in 2021, a trend that has continued into 2023.
Detailing the $42 million turnover, Cinecittà S.p.A said $37.4 million (34.5 million euros) was related to the soundstages, venues, and set designs, with...

Romantic comedies have been around since the beginning of the film industry, but they’ve had a bit of an up-and-down run over the years. From their heyday in the 1990s to Netflix’s recent efforts to bring them back into mainstream popularity, we thought it was time to take stock and make a list of the ten best romantic comedies ever.

Even before the days of Marvel's Cinematic Universe or its equivalent in DC, the relationship between film, television, and comics was a pretty symbiotic one. Just as film and TV are now majorly informed by comics, comic artists have taken inspiration from film and TV — especially when it comes to the design for certain characters. "Batman: Year One" artist David Mazzucchelli famously modeled his Bruce Wayne on "Roman Holiday" star Gregory Peck. Another less-subtle reference to a famous face — and one of my personal favorites — came in 2016's "Invincible Iron Man": artist Mike Deodato Jr. modeled his Tony Stark off Santiago Cabrebra, of "The Musketeers" and "Star Trek: Picard" fame.
Sometimes, though, the inspiration is equal parts thematic as it is aesthetic. On occasion, an episode of television can even inspire a shift in a narrative arc, a fresh conflict, or even a brand new character. Such was the case for Brian Michael Bendis,...

Before Frank Capra directed the 1946 classic, It’s a Wonderful Life, he made 1934’s It Happened One Night. It’s a romantic comedy that made Hollywood history as the first movie to perform a “clean sweep” at the Oscars‘ top five categories – Best Picture, Best Actor in a Leading Role, Best Actress in a Leading Role, Best Director, and Best Writing, Adaptation. Here’s why the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences made the right choice.

The rom-com genre goes all the way back to the days of William Shakespeare, which continues to find its way into contemporary takes on the genre. His plays inspired movies such as 2002’s 10 Things I Hate About You, 2006’s She’s the Man, and 2013’s Warm Bodies.

The Oscars have always been a battleground of sorts. In recent years, the ceremony has become a public event arbitrating issues of race, gender, and privilege in cinema and society. But throughout its 94-year history, the Academy Awards mediated some very different battles. There have been attempts to square petty power plays, wars with the Academy itself, and even attempts to take down a gay Oscars producer.

When one thinks of classic Hollywood celebrities, Audrey Hepburn probably comes to mind. Before her death in 1993, Hepburn was known for her starring roles in Sabrina, Funny Face, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and more. Here’s how Helpburn rose to fame in the 1950s.
Audrey Hepburn | Bettmann / Contributor Audrey Hepburn became famous because of the movie ‘Roman Holiday’
Hepburn’s first major film role came when she starred in the 1953 film Roman Holiday. Before starring in the romantic comedy, Hepburn was known for her work in theater.
According to a profile done by People Magazine in 1993, Hepburn “studied ballet” and was part of “a London production of High Batton Shoes.”
People Magazine reports that the actor “was spotted by the novelist Colette, who instantly realized that she had found the girl to play her Gigi on Broadway. That role won Hepburn a Theatre World Award in 1952.”

If a script involves the antichrist, gruesome deaths, and one spiraling towards insanity as they question whether or not their child is evil, it's safe to conclude the film can be categorized as horror. However, director Richard Donner took a delicate approach when he asked renowned actor Gregory Peck to be a lead role in his 1976 film "The Omen," the fourth film in Donner's directorial career. Donner's filmography is filled with successful and treasured films like "The Goonies". "Scrooged", and "Lethal Weapon." While his work has comedic elements, "The Omen" was far from a feel-good film and yet Donner desperately wanted Peck on board. In order to convince the highly sought-after and acclaimed actor to accept the role, Donner took a grey-area approach and tread lightly about how the film would be categorized.

During the mythical Golden Age of Hollywood, the romantic-comedy genre could be relied upon as a consistently entertaining, star-studded, and profitable performer at the box office, year in and year out. We've fallen quite a long way in the years since despite some recent breakthrough hits like "Crazy Rich Asians" or last year's double-whammy of "The Lost City" and "Ticket to Paradise." Instead of studios going out of their way to court genuine movie stars and put their charisma and charm on display for moviegoing audiences to enjoy vicariously, we've ended up in a place where those once-ubiquitous theatrical features instead struggle to justify their existence ... if they even make it to theaters at all.
That brings us to "At Midnight." On the surface, it has all the makings of a much-needed throwback date night at the movies, in the vein of "Roman Holiday" before it (which gets a shout-out...

Writer-director Jonah Feingold’s “At Midnight” sadly isn’t so much concerned with reinvention as it is with following a formula set by its cinematic forbearers. This spin on “Notting Hill” and “Roman Holiday” (the latter is channeled and referenced throughout) shows a silver screen superstar and a hotel employee falling in love and giving their lives the push they need to achieve their dreams. Although it’s tempting not to mess with perfection, innovation through tweaks to the narrative and characters would’ve changed this Paramount Plus feature from expected to extraordinary.

Cate Blanchett is going for her third Oscar with “TÁR,” but before that, she’ll have a chance to capture her third Best Actress BAFTA Award. Should she do so, she’ll move up to second place on the all-time winners list in the category.
A three-time BAFTA champ, Blanchett has two Best Actress trophies for “Elizabeth” (1998) and “Blue Jasmine” (2013) and one for Best Supporting Actress for “The Aviator” (2004). In the lead category, she’s one of 11 with two victories. That list gets drastically smaller the higher you go. She’s looking to become just the fourth person with three Best Actress wins, one shy of Maggie Smith‘s record of four.
Blanchett would join Anne Bancroft, Audrey Hepburn and Simone Signoret as three-time champs — but their ledgers come with a caveat. Until the ceremony in 1969 when they were consolidated into Best Actress, the BAFTAs had two actress categories: Best...

Gregory Peck’s leather-bound copy of the To Kill a Mockingbird screenplay will soon hit the auction block.

Filmmaker Spike Lee is set to receive the Ian McClellan Hunter Award from the Writers Guild of America East at the Writers Guild Awards in March.
The kudo recognizes writers who have made significant contributions to film and TV through a body work that takes on timely issues and social concerns. Past recipients include Robert Benton, Tom Fontana, Geoffrey Ward, Andrew Bergman, John Sayles, Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, John Waters, Richard Lagravenese, Nora Ephron and Walter Bernstein.
“For nearly forty years, Spike Lee has written and directed some of the most meaningful and creative films in cinema,” said WGA East president Michael Winship. “With a unique ability to challenge, entertain, and inform, his narratives spotlight the racism and bigotry that too often have defined the Black experience in America. Spike Lee is a moviemaker and storyteller greatly deserving to be honored with the WGA East’s Hunter Award for Career Achievement.

The Writers Guild of America East has named the latest recipient of its career achievement award: Spike Lee.
The Do the Right Thing and Da 5 Bloods filmmaker will receive the East Coast guild’s Ian McLellan Hunter Award at the 75th Annual Writers Guild Awards when their New York ceremony takes place at the Edison Ballroom on March 5. The award, established in 1992 in appreciation of the namesake British screenwriter (who wrote The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and famously put his name to the screenplay for Roman Holiday, which was actually co-penned by the then-blacklisted Dalton Trumbo), lauds a writer for the quality and breadth of their filmography. Nora Ephron, David Simon, John Waters and John Sayles have all been past recipients.
The award is generally given annually, but wasn’t bestowed in the past two years because the Writers Guild Awards went virtual due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

"It's A Wonderful Life" has played in many an American home for many Decembers. It has become an integral part of the holiday season, but it didn't start out that way. In fact, the film had a rather cold reception at first. The producer, director, and co-writer Frank Capra never expected it to go very far, but it has since become a staple of Hollywood cinema.
The original idea was based on scripts from three other writers, including Dalton Trumbo, who also worked on "Roman Holiday." Ever since the earliest days of cinema, Hollywood has loved celebrating the romantic genre. Rom-coms are a quintessential part of film history; the "Golden Age of Hollywood" featured the sly, romantic classics "It Happened One Night," "Roman Holiday," and "The Apartment."
While it's fun to see an idealized couple enjoying each other's company on screen, movie fans have to recognize that what they're seeing doesn't reflect reality. There's a sense of escapism that we're looking for when we're seeing a romantic film. You shouldn't have to worry about romantic movies making you feel insecure if you are single; in fact, there are many great films, both dramatic and comedic, that celebrate independence.
While these films are often comedies, living a single life is also the subject of many dramas and coming-of-age stories. It's a versatile subject, and being single is different depending on what age you are. Here are the 20 best movies about being single,...

Had author Philip Van Doren Stern not self-published his short story, "The Greatest Gift," and sent it out to his friends and family as his Christmas card, we may never have got "It's a Wonderful Life." The irony is not lost considering the story's plot.
The author spent months trying to hunt down a publisher willing to take a chance on his story about a man encountering a guardian angel that shows him what the world would have been like if he'd never been born. That's when he took the route to publish 200 copies of the story to send out to his loved ones.
His daughter Marguerite Stern Robinson recalled (via Independent) being in the third grade and delivering a few of the cards off to her teachers and friends. Back then, her father explained to her the importance of the story: "My father, who was himself from a mixed religious background,...

Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn were two of the biggest movie stars of their day, bringing a delightful levity and emotional complexity to their roles that were seldom matched by their peers. It was only a matter of time before they would team up in "Charade," a romantic mystery that put their comedic charm on full display. As scene-partners, their on-screen chemistry was incredibly compatible, leaving fans wondering why they only co-starred in a single film. As it turns out, Grant was offered quite a few roles opposite Hepburn before "Charade," but turned them down for one very sensible reason.
"Charade" has all the ingredients that make a great Alfred Hitchcock movie — humor, intrigue, and his leading man of choice, Cary Grant — except for the director himself. This resemblance was no accident, according to Stanley Donan, the director of "Charade." "I always wanted to make a movie like one of my favorites,...

Newcomer Milly Alcock stars as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen in HBO's highly anticipated "Game of Thrones" prequel, "House of the Dragon." The actor made her big debut during the show's world premiere on Aug. 21, and she's already made quite the impression as the new heir to Viserys I's throne - but she has big shoes to fill as a core part of the show's story.
Alcock, who hails from Australia, has been acting since she was a teen, landing roles on shows like "High Life," "Pine Gap," and "The Gloaming." Despite coming from a "sporty family," the actor says she still managed to find her creative passion. "I think I got my interest in acting because everybody was uninterested in acting," she told Vogue Australia of her family in 2020. "I grew up in a predominantly rugby union household; it doesn't make any sense."

William Wyler was a three-time Oscar winner who crafted several classics during Hollywood’s Golden Age, adapting his style to a wide variety of genres. Let’s take a look back at 20 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1902 in Germany, Wyler immigrated to the U.S. when his cousin, Universal Studios chief Carl Laemmle, hired him as an errand boy. He quickly moved up the ranks, directing shorts during the silent era before transitioning into features. It was with the advent of sound that he hit his stride, displaying an ear for dialogue that would serve him well in lofty literary adaptations produced by his longtime partner, independent mogul Samuel Goldwyn.
Wyler quickly became an Oscar mainstay, earning a record-breaking 12 nominations for Best Director: “Dodsworth” (1936), “Wuthering Heights” (1939), “The Letter” (1940), “The Little Foxes” (1941), “Mrs. Miniver” (1942), “The Best Years of Our Lives” (1946), “The Heiress” (1949), “Detective Story” (1951), “Roman Holiday...

2022 brings Far East Film back to its historical dimension. The Feff is once again what it has always been since 1999, but it also carries the imprint of all the latest changes: it is an augmented festival, more inclusive, and even more curious. If in the last two years Far East Film was forced to reinventing itself and review its formula with different parameters, these last few months have generated a sudden and wonderful acceleration: a wave of new energy, a vital frenzy which has shaped the twenty-fourth edition.

The Far East Film Festival in Italy’s Udine has set Chinese-Italian co-production “The Italian Recipe” as the opening title of a revived, largely in-person event.
The film, directed by Hou Zuxin, sees an unexpected series of events bring together a Chinese reality TV show contestant and a woman already resident in Italy. The collision of personalities, connections and chemistry between stars Liu Xun and Yao Huang resemble those of “Roman Holiday,” festival organizers suggest. The film has its world premier on Friday next week, launching a nine-day event that runs until April 22-30.
The 2022 selection runs to 72 titles, selected from over 400 submissions, numbers that organizers say, is proof that Asian filmmaking was not halted by the Covid-19 pandemic. “The fear, not unreasonable, given all the halted productions, dismantled sets and release dates announced and then postponed for months, that there wouldn’t be many films to choose from was...
