great animated classic
movieman_kev3 June 2005
Tom the cat is a soldier assigned to guard the banquet table. Along come Jerry the mouse and his orphan friend Nibbles, looking for something to eat and causing Tom much grief. This short won an Oscar for best cartoon short subject in 1952 and it's easy to see why as it's clever, humorous, and just an all around joy to watch. Utterly brilliant in every way and it retains it's humor upon repeated performances despite the slightly disturbing ending. One of the many many classic Tom and jerry animated shorts. This hilarious animated short can be found on disc 2 of Warner Brother's 2-DVD Spotlight Collection set.

AT LEAST two ratings points must be deducted because . . .

Warning: Spoilers
. . . screenwriter Hannah Barbara is totally illiterate. As any literate person well knows, there are FOUR musketeers (Charles de Batz de Castelmore--aka d'Artagnan, Comte de la Fere--aka Athos, Monsieur du Vallon--aka Porthos and Rene d'Herblay--aka Aramis). Furthermore, WHY is a "Tom" recast as Milady? Everyone knows that the highlight of the original story is when this scheming harlot, played by Bonnie Parker, is beheaded. And WHY is Ms. Barbara sending cartoon characters to the Guillotine in a children's film, anyway?

Touché, Pussycat!

This was good, but I don't see it as Oscar-worthy, unless the competition was slim that year. What did strike me early on was the magnificent artwork regarding the inside of the palace: rich colors and nice detail. Once the story started, however, we saw mostly food. Man, this animated short made me hungry.

Anyway, we are in France in the days of the sword-wielding muskateers, er, "mouseketeers" in this case. Tom, employed by the ruler, is to guard the king's banquet table "especially from those mousketeers," says the king. "If you don't, off comes your head!" Tom looks outside the window, sees the guillotine, and gulps.

The two mice - Jerry and "Nibbles" (the orphan from a previous cartoon) - invade the room and start gobbling up the food. Jerry spots them and the battle is on the rest of the way. There are a few clever things in here, such as using the pig's tail as a corkscrew, Tom making a shish kabob out a food thrown at him, etc.

In all, a solid story but I didn't like the ending. The cat went to the guillotine and was beheaded (not shown) and the mice walk away coldly stating, "Well, that's war." Wow - that's cold, brother.

One of a series that have Jerry and Nibbles as swordsmice in France.

This cartoon, winner of an Oscar, is one of several that have Tom and Jerry channeling Errol Flynn and Basil Rathbone (Nibbles seems to be channelling Eugene Pallette) and its all great fun. A marvelous cartoon, not my favorite of them, but excellent nonetheless. That its not in-print (with the others is sad. Cartoon Network does run it frequently though, so watch it, by all means. Most recommended.

I love this "Mouseketeer" short
ja_kitty_7124 January 2009
I love Jerry & Nibbles together. Although in the early cartoons of his filmography, you would never hear Nibbles talk, except in the "Mouseketeers" cartoons and in the Cinescope cartoon "Robin Hoodwinked," where Jerry and Nibbles tried to free Robin Hood from prison. Of course Nibbles talked in a British Cockney accent.

This is the first of a series of Tom & Jerry cartoons, where Jerry & Nibbles are mousey musketeers and matching wits with Tom the palace guard/cat. In this cartoon, the Mouseketeers are stealing food from the palace banquet hall and Tom tries to stop them, but fail. I was surprised that he a cartoon character got executed, YIKES!

As I said before, I love a good swashbuckler neither movie or cartoon; take Daffy Duck's "The Scarlet Pumpernickel" for example. Also I love that Nibbles could speak flaunt French in the "Mouseketeers," something you would never hear in cartoons, because a cartoon character would speak different languages in a pseudo manner. So anyway, this cartoon is now became my favorite out of the "Mouseketeer" cartoons.

C'est magnifique!

Although I have loved all of the Mousketeer Tom and Jerry cartoons, this could very well be the best of all. Everything about The Two Mousketeers is simply wonderful. The story is a nice one, with Tom as a guard guarding the food as his life depends on it and Jerry and Nibbles try to thwart him. The rest, well you have to see it for yourself. The animation is simply great, lively backgrounds and all the characters are well drawn, in fact this could very well be the best-looking of the Mousketeer shorts. The music is wonderful, I loved the title song, so spirit-rousing and makes you sing along. The sight gags come by thick and fast and are simply delightful, every single one of them work, and the minimal dialogue("touche pussy cat") is good too. The characters are a lot of fun, Tom and Jerry still maintain their unique personalities, while Nibbles is funny and adorable. Overall, a truly excellent Tom and Jerry cartoon. 10/10 Bethany Cox

The worst cartoon depicting Jerry and Nibbles bullying Tom and getting him killed
crosswalkx6 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I have also seen this cartoon and it was terrible to watch. Jerry and Nibbles are 2 Mouseketeers who torment, bully and abuse Tom and make his life a living hell. They make a mess of the feast and get Tom in trouble. They both team up sword fight against Tom and gets him in trouble in the end by watching him get executed by the guillotine.

Why did Hanna and Barbara make this awful cartoon? I don't understand why it won an Oscar, there are better Oscar cartoons made in this year. The Donald Duck cartoon "Let's Stick Together" should've won that award instead.

I would've liked to see Jerry and Nibbles lose for once. I would've like to see Tom win as he was just trying to do the guard duty job. If anything they should've been executed instead of Tom or better yet the rotten king in this cartoon should've been overthrown from his throne for animal cruelty to Tom the cat.

There are much better Hanna and Barbara cartoons to watch. I'm very disappointed with this cartoon short. There's a better Tom and Jerry 1954 cartoon prequel "Touche Pussycat" which was better than this cartoon.

I'm still in shock at what they do to Tom in this one
BA_Harrison2 November 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Set in 18th century France, Oscar-winning short The Two Mouseketeers sees Tom assigned to guard a lavish banquet from Jerry and Nibbles, a pair of swashbuckling swords-mice with massive appetites.

This might have won an Academy Award, but it is far from my favourite Tom and Jerry short: not only does The Two Mouseketeers feature Jerry's horrible little mouse sidekick Nibbles (whose sickeningly cute voice is like fingernails on a chalkboard to me), but it ends with poor Tom being beheaded by guillotine after failing to do his duty. I know it's only a cartoon, and that Tom would return alive and well for his next caper, but I find the idea of the poor cat having his head lopped off rather unsettling.

I rate this one 4/10 for the cruel ending (although I probably wouldn't have been so harsh with my score had it been Nibbles with his head in the guillotine).

Way Over the Top
Hitchcoc13 October 2021
Usually the violence in the T & J cartoons is silly. Obviously, it is always about the mice getting the upper hand and Tom bringing much of it upon himself. Here, however, the cruelty goes way beyond. Tom guards the king and is on a short leash which eventually proves his undoing. Jerry and his little sidekick wreak havoc on the poor guy. I suppose you could say he gets battered so often that the ending should be just another silly bit, but it doesn't appear that way. The violence is creative and the animation superb, but it's a harsh cartoon.

Where is your sense of justice? This isnt good for kids at all.. Disgusting

Warning: Spoilers
I dont think it warrants a need for spoiler warning since this episode is decades old and its practically safe to assume that everyone whos got a television or a computer had watched this at least a hundred times.

So, it starts with Tom being briefed about guarding the feast table with his life and must he fails, he is to subject to the guillotine. Now Jerry, together with his sidekick, Nibbles are on their way to screw that up.. So like all other Tom and Jerry episodes, Tom suffers from falling short of plot armor and cartoon logic does him in that he would always be vulnerable to whatever that Jerry throws at him..

So in the end.. Tom dies by the blade and the duo strut away victorious ending the episode with Nibbles commenting "Cest la vie"...

-I was only 6 years old when I first saw this and for some reason, I was the only one who finds it disturbing...
