In the time since Olivia Colman won the 2019 Best Actress Oscar for appearing in 49 minutes and 48 seconds of “The Favourite,” the academy has consistently given the same award to women with much higher amounts of screen time. All of the category’s last three champions delivered performances that are over 80 minutes in length and rank among the 22 longest ever honored here. Since four of the five current Best Actress nominees hit the 93-minute mark, this trend is practically bound to continue.
Reigning Best Actress victor Jessica Chastain earned the prize for her one hour, 36 minutes, and 42 seconds of work as Tammy Faye Bakker in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” which amounts to 76.45% of the film. Hers is the fifth longest of the 97 performances that have won this award, after those of Vivien Leigh (“Gone with the Wind”), Barbra Streisand (“Funny Girl”), Meryl Streep (“Sophie’s Choice”), and Olivia de Havilland (“To Each His Own...

As the director and producer of both “House of Gucci” and “The Last Duel,” Ridley Scott is poised to score big when the 2022 Oscar nominations are announced three months from now. Reaping double Best Picture or Best Director bids would make the 83-year-old the first to pull off either feat since Steven Soderbergh did so in 2001. Even if he ends up being left out of both lineups, he could still make history if academy voters decide to recognize the work of his two leading ladies. If Jodie Comer (“The Last Duel”) and Lady Gaga (“House of Gucci”) are both chosen to compete for Best Actress, Scott will become the fifth person to direct female leads from different films to nominations in a single year.

“Gunpowder Milkshake” has arrived on Netflix, and Deadpool no longer has the market cornered on hilarious weapons bags. Sam (Karen Gillan) will see Deadpool’s Hello Kitty backpack, and raise you a bright yellow duffel bag, with a simple “I heart kittens” on the side. It was arguably one of the best jokes of the film, but according to “Gunpowder Milkshake” co-writer and director Navot Papushado, that bag was meant to be more than just a gag.
“We spent a lot of time creating a color palette and deciding what colors mean to us,” Papushado tells TheWrap. “What the color blue would mean? Maybe it’s more of The Firm, [the organization Sam works for]. What would the color brown mean? It’s more earthy. What would the color orange mean? It symbolized change. And what would the color yellow mean? And we decided straight from the get-go, the color yellow represents death.”

Elaine Crombie delivered the second annual Naidoc Week Lecture at Nida this week, drawing attention to training programs and her own experience as a First Nations creative.
Crombie, a Pitjantjatjara, Warrigmal, South Sea and German-descended actor, singer, songwriter and writer from South Australia, discussed the importance of First Nations people standing together in the arts.
A self-described “older woman in this game”, Crombie has noticed upcoming comedic talent “blitzing past”. But she emphasised there is nothing helpful about looking at newcomers with “side eyes and head tilts”.
“Being black and in the arts, we can’t do that. We have to always lead with love and celebrate each other,” she said.
“I purposely love everybody, and champion everybody.”
Crombie acknowledged the work Nida is doing as an educational institution, but also questioned if there is enough Indigenous-controlled spaces to nurture new talent. She particularly highlighted the effect Naisda Dance College...

It’s never easy to say goodbye to a beloved character. But the festive funeral in Part 3 of Netflix’s Family Reunion certainly helped soften the blow.
Arguably the most touching of the eight new installments when the sitcom returned Monday, Episode 7 (titled “Remember When the Glass Passed?”) focuses on the sudden and unexpected death of Principal Glass (guest star Mark Curry) and how it impacts each of the McKellan kids.

Violet, Justine Bateman’s often sharp commentary on a certain side of the movie business, suggests what might have happened if a protagonist of Kitty Green’s The Assistant decided to stay in her toxic work environment for the rest of her career. Stuck in a different kind of development hell, Violet (Olivia Munn) is a production executive working for an independent producer Tom (Dennis Boutsikaris) who expects her to leverage all manner of her personal life to get the job done. Living with life-long friend Red (Luke Bracey), a screenwriter blacklisted by Tom, she has been guided by a menacing conversation in her head she calls “the committee” (voiced by Justin Theroux) who serves as a gatekeeper between her reality and true happiness. The voice casts self doubt which is sometimes, but not always, contradicted by hand-written notes that appear over the image on screen.

We recently did an Oscars flashback 70 years to the 23rd Academy Awards ceremony, and now we go back a decade more to the 13th ceremony, which was held on February 27, 1941, and would be the last ceremony before the United States’ entry into WWII. It was a year of many firsts that remain part of the ceremonies, a year of historic firsts in the competitive categories and a year that recognized many icons of cinema, although it’s astounding to learn that some of these individuals never won a competitive Oscar.
This was the inaugural year for sealed envelopes, with the identity of the winners kept secret until their names were called, prompting the now famous phrase, “May I have the envelope, please?” This was also the first time in Academy history that a producer won the top prize back to back.

She’s also had animated appearances that have been geared towards kids over the years, spreading messages of inclusion and acceptance in a very positive way that has been able to reach many people. Finally, it’s starting to feel like an actual awards season.
It’s been a protracted and distracted season so far, with every film festival going virtual and every awards show moving its dates back in the hopes that in-person gatherings will be safe at some point. In that context, the awards race has been an afterthought of sorts — something to get to once the social, medical and political madness died down.
Of course none of that has really died down, but an awards picture that felt beside the point in November and December and into January has grabbed our attention in February.
Tuesday brought a small aperitif, the Producers Guild’s documentary nominations. Wednesday, the Golden Globe nominations got Hollywood up bright and early, followed a couple of hours later by the Writers Guild’s TV noms. They’re Animaniacs, and they’re rebooting to the max.
In the first big musical number of the long-awaited reboot to the beloved ‘90s animated series, the three deranged siblings who live in the Warner Bros. water tower — Yakko, Wakko and Dot — get caught up on the last 22 years since Steven Spielberg and Tom Ruegger’s original “Animaniacs” went off the air. Hanging chads, YouTube, climate change, all of it.
That comes with the in-sketch caveat that, given the long lead time on animation production, the show’s writers are penning script in 2018, and therefore don’t know the results of this year’s presidential election. But little did the show’s revivers know that the election would actually be the most predictable event scheduled for 2020.

The verdict is in. If you want to have success in awards’ season go to court. Over the decades, a caseload of legal movies have been judged to be Oscar worthy. And for good reason. The genre is rich with emotions, betrayals, manipulations, love, hate, violence and redemption. Who doesn’t remember Humphrey Bogart’s brilliant Oscar-nominated turn as Captain Queeg slowly losing his mind on the stand as he recounts his obsession with missing strawberries in 1954’s “The Caine Mutiny”?
“A Free Soul” (1931)

Though his free-spirited daughter (Norma Shearer), who wears the slinkiest of gowns, has a boyfriend (a staid Leslie Howard), she soon realizes she loves bad boys and leaves Howard for Gable. It’s a big mistake.

It’s a big mistake.

The Turtle is the frontrunner to win season 3 of “The Masked Singer.” He is one of the strongest contenders in the quarterfinal on May 6. He earned his spot in the final five based on his powerhouse performance of “Stay” by Alessia Cara last week. That was just the latest of his outstanding turns in the spotlight that won praise from the four judges four judges.
We’ve been wondering who the Turtle is since he made his debut on the show in week 1 with his cover of “Kiss from a Rose” by Seal. He followed that up with “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back” by Shawn Mendes; “Higher Love” by Steve Winwood; “Say You Won’t Let Go” by James Arthur; and “Let It Go” by James Bay.
To figure out who the Turtle really is, we’ve watched all of his performances again as well as his clues videos.

This week on “The Masked Singer,” it was “a smackdown between two mammals, one amphibian and an appealing fruit” … sue me, I quoted from the open. Nick Cannon sparkled, literally, in a glitter tux as he introduced guest panelist Sharon Osbourne. She even noticed his shiny duds, I just wish his clothes fit better, but I digress. It was the Frog vs. the Kitty up first, but who is that kitty cat? Below, we analyze the clues.
See Bret Michaels (‘The Masked Singer’ Banana) unmasked interview: ‘I’ve never had such a great time’ and ‘Banana fans are awesome!’

She was born Virginia Katherine McMath in Independence, Missouri. Her parents divorced when she was young, and she moved to Texas with her mother. Oscar often calls when funny ladies get serious on the big screen. This year, it might be Melissa McCarthy’s turn to be recognized for her dramatic change of pace in the truth-based “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” As Lee Israel, a Manhattan-based curmudgeonly author with a drinking problem whose style of celebrity biographies have gone out of fashion by the year 1991, McCarthy drops all pretense of adopting her usual bouncy and brassy comic persona.
Instead, she wallows in disappointment, bitterness and child-like prankish behavior. In order to raise much-needed cash to pay her bills, she stoops to forging letters from long-dead celebrities and selling them to gullible bookstore owners and collectors. I kept waiting for McCarthy to part the clouds that hang over her character and inject a bit of her sunny side. Instead, she is marvelously morose as she performs a committed overcast performance that pays off big time as the movie concludes.

“The Shape of Water” is one of two Best Picture Oscar nominees with three acting nominations — the other being “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” — but star Sally Hawkins and supporting players Octavia Spencer and Richard Jenkins are not predicted to win any of them. If they indeed go 0-3 on Sunday and “The Shape of Water” takes the top prize, the fantasy drama will join eight other Best Picture champs that did not convert any of its three-plus acting nominations into wins.
“Birdman” (2014) was the most recent Best Picture winner not to carry an acting award from at least three nominations, as Michael Keaton, Emma Stone and Edward Norton fell to Eddie Redmayne (“The Theory of Everything”), Patricia Arquette (“Boyhood”) and J.K. Simmons (“Whiplash”), respectively. Arquette and Simmons were the supporting frontrunners all season, but Keaton was locked in a tight Best Actor race with Redmayne until the SAG Awards...

Frances McDormand (“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”), Saoirse Ronan (“Lady Bird”), Sally Hawkins (“The Shape of Water”), Meryl Streep (“The Post”) and Margot Robbie (“I, Tonya”) have long been our predicted Best Actress Oscar nominees. If they all make the cut, along with their films in Best Picture, they’d join a very exclusive club: It’d be first Best Actress slate in 40 years and just the fifth overall where everyone is in a film nominated for Best Picture.
The only other times this has occurred were for the film years 1934, 1939, 1940 and 1977 — but many of them come with caveats. In 1934, there were still only three acting nominees — winner Claudette Colbert (“It Happened One Night”), Grace Moore (“One Night of Love”) and Norma Shearer (“The Barretts of Wimpole Street”) — and 12 Best Picture nominees, before the academy standardized the categories to five each. 'Trumbo' movie: Bryan Cranston as screenwriter Dalton Trumbo and Helen Mirren as gossip columnist Hedda Hopper. 'Trumbo' movie review: Highly entertaining 'history lesson' Full disclosure: on the wall in my study hangs a poster – the iconic photograph of blacklisted Hollywood screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, with black-horned rim glasses, handlebar mustache, a smoke dangling from the end of a dramatic cigarette holder. He's sitting – stark naked – in a tub surrounded by his particular writing apparatus. He's looking directly into the camera of the photographer, his daughter Mitzi. Dalton Trumbo's son, Christopher Trumbo, gave me the poster after my interview with him for the release of Peter Askin's 2007 documentary also titled Trumbo. That film combines archival footage, including family movies and photographs, with performances of the senior Trumbo's letters to his family during their many years of turmoil before and through the blacklist, including his time in prison. The letters are read by,...

Toronto – The damage the House Un-American Activities committee wrought between 1938 and 1975 was unconscionable. As the Cold War heated up thousands of innocent citizens were accused of being members of or sympathetic to the Communist Party and this committee was responsible for much of the hysteria. The witch-hunt hit Hollywood hard and after a number of hearings prompted the infamous blacklist, an unofficial designation that denied work to anyone in the industry with suspected communist ties. There was one man who is credited as bringing the blacklist down, screenwriter Dalton Trumbo and his story is chronicled in Jay Roach’s new biopic “Trumbo.” Something tells us if Trumbo were alive today he might pass along some script notes to Roach and writer John McNamara. In theory, “Trumbo” is an incredible true story that should be prime fodder for a great movie. Before the blacklist, Trumbo (Bryan Cranston) was one of the...

'The Letter' 1940, with Bette Davis 'The Letter' 1940 movie: Bette Davis superb in masterful studio era production Directed by William Wyler and adapted by Howard Koch from W. Somerset Maugham's 1927 play, The Letter is one of the very best films made during the Golden Age of the Hollywood studios. Wyler's unsparing, tough-as-nails handling of the potentially melodramatic proceedings; Bette Davis' complex portrayal of a passionate woman who also happens to be a self-absorbed, calculating murderess; and Tony Gaudio's atmospheric black-and-white cinematography are only a few of the flawless elements found in this classic tale of deceit. 'The Letter': 'U' for 'Unfaithful' The Letter begins in the dark of night, as a series of gunshots are heard in a Malayan rubber plantation. Leslie Crosbie (Bette Davis) walks out the door of her house firing shots at (barely seen on camera) local playboy Jeff Hammond, who falls dead on the ground.
