If Jane Austen were alive today, and if for some baffling reason she wrote film criticism instead of brilliant novels, she'd probably say it is a truth universally acknowledged that a film that makes a fortune must be in want of a sequel.
Sure enough, no matter how much the industry changes, the desire to capitalize on a hit film by making another one just like it, rubber-stamped for audience familiarity, must be overwhelming. The history of cinema is littered with sequels and for each one that audiences remember — for better or worse — there's at least one that's almost completely forgotten, even if they're the sequel to a film that won Best Picture at the Academy Awards.
Indeed, there are more forgotten Best Picture sequels than you might expect. George C. Scott reprised his Oscar-winning role as General George S. Patton 16 years later, in the TV movie "The Last Days of Patton.

The Berlinale Classics strand at the 66th Berlin International Film Festival (Feb 11-21) is to include premieres of six films: two German and four international productions, five of them world premieres.
Us film The Road Back directed by James Whale in 1937, references a slice of German history. It is based on the eponymous Erich Maria Remarque novel about four German infantrymen who face a difficult road back to civilian life.
In 1939, after protests from Germany, Universal Studios re-edited the film without consulting the director. The festival is showing a reconstruction of Whale’s original 1937 theatrical release version, preserved by the Library of Congress in collaboration with NBCUniversal and Martin Scorsese’s The Film Foundation. David Stenn and the UCLA Film & Television Archive provided skills and film footage.

While we thought it could sneak into the end of the 2015 calendar, it looks like Paramount is holding off a release of Martin Scorsese‘s priest drama Silence until after its rumored Cannes premiere. As we wait for the first trailer, today brings a few updates on the adaptation of Shûsaku Endô‘s novel, which follows Andrew Garfield as Father Rodrigues, a 17th-century Portuguese Jesuit who travels to Japan with a fellow priest amid rumors that Rodrigues’ mentor has abandoned the Church.
Ahead of the film’s release, earlier this year Approaching Silence was published (pick it up here), a novel which features a collection of essays looking back at the real-life background of Endô’s work. If you're wondering about Daniel Radcliffe's post-Harry Potter plans, wonder no more. According to Variety, Radcliffe has signed on to star in a new adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque's 1929 anti-war novel, All Quiet on the Western Front. Remarque's novel has been adapted twice, first in a 1930 adaptation directed by Lewis Milestone and second in a 1979 made-for-tv miniseries produced by Hallmark starring Richard Thomas and Ernest Borgnine. Milestone's adaptation won Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Director.
Remarque's novel follows Paul Baumer (played by Lew Ayres in the 1930 adaptation) and his friends as World War I breaks out. Stirred by patriotic speeches and national pride, Baumer and his friends volunteer for service in the German Army. They quickly learn the realities of war: endless waiting, bursts of frenzied action, the loss of friends to physical and psychological injuries and death, the.onset of cynicism, self-doubt, and doubt about the merits of the war.

The long-awaited release of Universal Studios’ 2010 version of The Wolfman conjures the history of the men who made the original horror films at the studio in the 1920s through the 1940s. Not only was the original 1941 film The Wolf Man key among them, but the rich history of the other films is directly tied into both why and how that film was created.
In 1928, after his father had appointed 21-year-old Carl Laemmle, Jr. as head of production at Universal Studios, the machinery was in place for a new wave of films based on classic horror stories. By 1931, the studio had both Dracula and Frankenstein as two of its greatest successes, and they followed those up with a few more early 1930s originals, including The Mummy and The Invisible Man.
By 1935, they had produced Werewolf of London, their first film based on the Loup-Garou stories from France...
