MGM celebrated its centennial on April 17th. Marcus Lowe established the studio by merging Metro Pictures, Goldwyn Pictures and Louis B. Mayer Pictures. Boasting it had “more stars than there are in heaven,” MGM may have been the biggest studio during the Golden Age of Hollywood, it has gone through many owners and regimes over the years but seems to on terra firma since Amazon acquired MGM in 2021. In fact, Amazon MGM Studios won best screenplay Oscar for “American Fiction.” And speaking of Academy Awards, MGM has earned numerous statuettes over the years. Here’s a look at five Best Picture winners produced between 1929-1958.

“It’s the role of a lifetime,” exclaims Chip Zien in reference to his character Rabbi in “Harmony.” The actor’s agents were initially hesitant to send him the script for the Barry Manilow and Bruce Sussman musical, as Zien wanted to pull back from the typical rabbi roles he frequently played. But, this character wasn’t just any rabbi. He had a remarkable true life story as a member of a notorious singing ensemble which rose to fame while Nazis rose to power. “It was a brilliant, period-specific score, and the whole thing has just been a thrill from the get go,” says Zien. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
The musical follows the formation and rise of The Comedian Harmonists in Germany. The six-man act quickly ascended to fame in the 1920s and 30s, selling millions of records and selling out houses around the world. But the rise...

“There are really only two things that can turn a bad day into a great one: The first is love. But to be honest, that’s not for today. My third wife just dumped me. The second is a heist worth millions of euros,” future Spanish Mint robber Berlin, played again by Pedro Alonso, says at the very beginning of “Berlin,” the spinoff of from Money Heist (“La Casa de Papel”) which Netflix drops Dec. 29.
More precisely, in “Berlin,” he aims with his gang to steal €44 million’s ($47.5 million) worth in 63 jewels from 34 cities across Europe – Zurich, Milan, Saint Petersburg, and so on – in just one night, as they come together in Paris’ biggest auction house.
Netflix has also shared in exclusivity with Variety one of the very first images from “Berlin.”
From “Money Heist” creators Alex Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato, like the original “Berlin” is a notably Latin makeover of a U.

Exclusive: Blue Fox Entertainment announced it has acquired worldwide rights and will be launching sales on the sci-fi thriller Site at the upcoming American Film Market in November. The gripping and thought-provoking film is written and directed by the award-winning Jason Eric Perlman, who was recently named #4 in LA Weekly’s “Top 10 Entertainment Professionals to Watch in 2023.” His debut feature Threshold was released by Sony Pictures after a decorated festival run in 2017.
Blue Fox Entertainment is handling worldwide sales and will preview first look footage of the film for buyers at the upcoming American Film Market (AFM). Blue Fox Entertainment’s US distribution division is planning a theatrical release for the film.
The film stars Jake McLaughlin, Arielle Kebbel, Theo Rossi, and Miki Ishikawa, and Yoson An.
In Site, Neil (Jake McLaughlin) experiences an inexplicable time distortion in an abandoned military test site while inspecting it with his business partner Garrison (Theo Rossi). Soon, Neil is having repeated traumatic flashes back to a WWII prison camp in China called Unit 731, which somehow holds the thread to his own unraveling present. Neil begins to realize that the past lives and events in this place of unspeakable brutality seem to mirror his own trauma with his son Wiley and his wife Elena (Arielle Kebbel). Desperate for answers, Neil enlists Naomi (Miki Ishikawa) to help him find the facility’s last surviving scientist. Ultimately, Neil awakens to a new redemptive responsibility, both within his own family and the greater society around him.
Site is produced by publicist and entrepreneur Benjamin Cooke, Sundance alum, Kelly Hayes, international businesswoman, Yvonne Supangkat, and Jason Eric Perlman.
Blue Fox Entertainment’s James Huntsman said, “Audiences are hungry for high quality science fiction thrillers, which have been scarce in the market recently. With Site, Jason and his talented cast and crew have created an exciting journey that has something relevant to say beneath the surface of the film.”
Director Jason Eric Perlman said, “We are thrilled to have this film beginning its journey in the viewing world. In this time of such unthinkable conflicts I believe it’s vital that creativity explores the interconnectedness of mankind, as well as the atrocities we are capable of inflicting upon one another. Site is intent upon doing both, but with the philosophical imperative that if we ignore history, or the darkness within each of us, we are doomed to repeat the same traumas over and over.
It has been an honor to work with our incredibly talented cast in bringing this story to life, and their commitment to the material elevates it to a remarkable plane. Our visionary crew is also to be credited with what I believe we’ve achieved. The cinematography of Eunah Lee and the brilliant production design of Gabor Norman were integral in the telling of this story to full potential. We are excited to team now with Blue Fox in launching this film into the world.”...

Eva Longoria and Cris Abrego have known each other for 20 years. As two of entertainment’s most prominent Latino figures, they have developed a strong friendship around shared experiences and a similar passion for nurturing creative talent.
At long last, actor-director-producer Longoria and Abrego, the veteran unscripted producer and executive, have joined forces to launch Hyphenate Media Group, a company that will be part production company, part talent scouting agency and part business incubator. Banijay, where Abrego serves as chairman of the Americas, has made a strategic investment in the company. Abrego will remain in his executive role with the French production giant even as he devotes his time to building Hyphenate.
“With Hyphenate Media Group, Eva and I are building an engine for culture-defining content by investing in visionary multi-hyphenate artists and providing these extraordinary creative leaders with the resources and infrastructure they need to scale their businesses,” Abrego said.

Few names in Hollywood's illustrious history get people talking quite like Joan Crawford. The legendary actress began her career in silent films before transitioning to sound, and worked for decades, appearing in more than 80 films and television shows. However, the images conjured up of Crawford these days are rarely of her -- instead, they're of Faye Dunaway, who played a diabolical and utterly maniacal version of the actress in "Mommie Dearest," That 1981 film -- based on a shocking book from Crawford's daughter Christina -- changed Crawford's reputation forever and all-too-often erases her stature as one of cinemas greatest stars.
That is nothing short of a tragedy. Few actors could match Crawford's talent, determination, and tenacity. Indeed, even after she retired and then passed away in 1977, very few have matched her prodigious abilities. It can be difficult to look past her domineering facade (especially in a post-"Mommie Dearest" world), but...

Keith Reid, who cowrote the lyrics for most of Procol Harum’s original songs, died March 23 of cancer, his wife confirmed. No details on location were provided.
Reid was a writer on Procol Harum’s biggest hit, 1967’s “A Whiter Shade of Pale,” as well as on group classics as “A Salty Dog,” “Conquistador,” “Shine on Brightly” and “Grand Hotel.”
Born on October 19, 1946, in Hertfordshire, England, Reid began collaborating with Procol Harum keyboardist Gary Brooker in the 1960s. One of their first joint efforts, “A Whiter Shade of Pale,” reached No. 1 in their native U.K., as well as in Australia, Canada, and several European countries. It also reached No. 5 on Billboard’s Hot 100 singles chart in the U.S.

Interpol have announced the release of their seventh LP, The Other Side of Make-Believe, which arrives July 15 via Matador. The band have also dropped the video for the album’s first single, “Toni,” the first installment of a two-part film.
In the Van Alpert-directed visual, frontman Paul Banks pulls up in a classic car to a sinister scene, siren wailing: A couple hides in an industrial area from a gang of dancers wielding chains, bats, and nunchucks. As the couple tries to flee, they’re spotted and the gang gives chase.

The Oscars could have some interesting surprises pop up at the ceremony on April 25, even in the best picture race. Given the unprecedented nature of the season and the assumption that many AMPAS voters sat out the nomination phase of voting, a couple of upsets may await. One of which could be “The Trial of the Chicago 7” only winning best picture.
The historical drama, written and directed by Aaron Sorkin, has long been considered one of the potential spoilers to Chloé Zhao’s “Nomadland,” which has been steamrolling its competition most of the awards season. After the Netflix drama failed to score a director nod for Sorkin, all hope seemed to be lost, especially after factoring in its losses from the WGA (losing to “Promising Young Woman”), DGA and PGA (losing to “Nomadland”). However, the film got a nice bump from the SAG Awards, picking up the cast ensemble prize.

Never has Spanish TV drama production been so vibrant.
Over the past 12 months, “La Casa de Papel” (“Money Heist”) and “Elite” became global sensations via Netflix, building on the success of previous series that demonstrated a never-seen-before appetite for Spanish originals.
Netflix is opening the doors of its first European production hub in Madrid in early April and preparing five new Spanish Originals; Movistar + aims to produce 15 series a year; HBO and Amazon are increasing production.
Meanwhile, top free-to-air TV broadcasters Mediaset España and Atresmedia are re-inventing themselves as studios, producing content for third-party operators, and taking advantage of their production expertise.
The boom is opening up more ambitious and flexible business production models, such as co-production.
“Many of our projects, from inception, have co-production partners,” says Telefonica’s Movistar + president, Sergio Oslé. “It keeps us international from the get-go and helps us distribute, and also reach some scale and share know-how.

Cannes — A Movistar + Original Series co-produced with and sold by Studiocanal, “Instinto” begins with deep breathing.
It is in fact Marco Mur (Mario Casas), jogging down an empty near-dawn Madrid street. But it could as easily be his having sex. He pleasures himself in the shower, glances at a sketch – maybe his – of a naked woman, then heads to his shrink.
That night he’s off to an “Eyes Wide Shut”-style S & M club, has a threesome with two masked girls. By day, Marco is an entrepreneur and owner of Alva, a high-tech industrial engineering company whose banner first product is Ciclon, a luxury automobile converting wind-power into energy. But even his inventions – there’s a high-speed train in the pipeline – seem, symbolically, a way of escape.
Where did you get the idea for Ciclon? an Arab sheik and potential investor asks at its presentation

“It’s been really lovely to see how in some small part we can use this platform to help these people and families,” said One Day at a Time executive producer and co-showrunner Gloria Calderon Kellett of the effort initiated this week by TV writers to stop families being separated at the southern border by Donald Trump’s administration. “It feels like paying it forward,” added the daughter of Cuban immigrants, who were given sanctuary when they came to American decades ago.
“It was Tanya’s idea and we were just sick, we feel like what can we do?” Kellett explained of the outreach that Netflix’s Odaat and Starz’s Vida, which is Ep’d by Tanya Saracho, began on June 19. “Let’s start with the scribes,” she noted. “We just started it and reached out to rooms where we knew one of the writers or had connections. The chorus of voices from the entertainment industry demanding an end to the Trump administration’s “zero tolerance” immigration policy and the separation of children from their families at the U.S.-Mexico border continues to grow.
On Tuesday, the showrunners of Netflix’s “One Day at a Time” and Starz’s “Vida” — both series centered on the lives of Latinx people — announced that they would be “teaming up to end family separation at the border,” “Odaat’s” Gloria Calderón Kellett wrote on Twitter.
“Vida” Ep Tanya Saracho posted on Instagram using the hashtag #OneVidaataTime, and challenged “Jane the Virgin” and “Grand Hotel” to join the two shows’ writers rooms in donating to Raices Texas, an organization that raises funds to post bail for parents arrested at the border. As Women in Film celebrates its 45th anniversary, the industry is finally catching up to the org’s call for gender parity and women’s rights. Wif has set Ignited as the theme for this year’s annual Crystal + Lucy Awards on June 13 at the Beverly Hilton.
ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey, slated to receive the Lucy Award for Excellence in Television, recently demonstrated the importance of women, and women of color, in decision-making roles when she decisively responded to Roseanne Barr’s racist tweet with an immediate cancellation of the comedian’s eponymous No. 1 comedy on May 29. Dungey’s action may be as much a sign of the times as the image of Harvey Weinstein in handcuffs.
Before the Barr incident, the ABC exec talked to Variety about the tipping point. “The #MeToo movement and Time’s Up has really brought the conversation to the forefront across the country and around the world,...

A look back at the highest kicks (and notes) over the history of the Tony Awards telecast celebrating Broadway
“Grand Hotel” (1990)
Michael Jeter, perhaps best known from the sitcom “Evening Shade,” was a rubber-limbed sensation playing a tipsy bookkeeper in the number “Let’s Take a Glass Together.”
“Dreamgirls” (1992)
Jennifer Holliday’s rendition of “And I’m Telling You…” has been widely imitated, and this is the performance that is most often imitated. A-ma-zing.
“Rent” (1996)
Jonathan Larson’s rock opera version of “La Boheme” gained extra poignance with his unexpected death after the first Off Broadway preview. The show became a phenomenon, and launched the careers of Idina Menzel, Jesse L. Martin and Taye Diggs. Tony Awards
“Promises, Promises” (1979)

The new series that have sprouted up for the 2018-19 television season are taking notable steps to be more inclusive in not only its casting but also with key creative roles, but parity still hasn’t been hit yet.
Working with industry sources, Variety has identified 88 key roles in 34 scripted shows debuting on broadcast in fall 2018 and beyond. Among these roles across the five major networks are 42% women and 42% people of color. Breaking it down further, Variety has identified 18% women of color in these roles.
Looking at those behind-the-scenes in executive producer roles, 34% are women this year, while 10.7% are people of color (2.68% are women of color).
Of course, there will be personnel changes from pick-up to premiere that may alter these numbers slightly. CBS’ “The Code” and NBC’s “In Between” have already announced recasting for a key role each, while many series from first-time creators will surely be looking to attached a seasoned showrunner.

Upfronts Week means a glorious celebration of the new shows we can look forward to premiering this fall or later in the year. It also means a glorious opportunity to judge the shows in question, thanks to the trailers that are launched online.
Reviewing a show based on a trailer is a technically dicey proposition, which is why officially what we’re doing here is evaluating the trailers for each show. After all, communicating a premise and a raison d’etre is tougher than you might think within the span of three minutes or less — which is why we herald the trailers that do so well, and worry about the trailers that fail to excel at capturing our interest.
Below are IndieWire’s ongoing reviews of every trailer to debut…some of which do a better job than others at selling their shows.

Hot on the heels of its biggest debut in years, ABC will bring back its “Roseanne” reboot in the fall, sticking on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. Perhaps providing a little balance to its schedule, the network will also bring back Alec Baldwin’s talk show, now titled “The Alec Baldwin Show,” this fall.
Originally titled “Sundays with Alec Baldwin,” the show got a sneak peek — to mixed reviews — after the Oscars in March. Based on his podcast “Here’s the Thing,” the show features Baldwin’s interviews with various personalities.
By including two such outspoken personalities on its fall schedule — a Donald Trump fan (Roseanne Barr) and the man who plans him for laughs on “Saturday Night Live” (Baldwin) — might give the network a little bit of cover, by invoking their schedule’s “balance” if one or the other says or does something politically controversial outside of their shows. (Which they probably will.

“American Housewife” and “Child Support” fans will want to note their new time slots.
Interestingly enough, “Goldbergs” spinoff “Schooled” will have to wait until midseason, which means it likely won’t be paired with (at least much of) the original Adam Goldberg sitcom.

Ken Loach meets the fans outside the Grand Hotel Pupp at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival Photo: Film Servis Kviff Ken Loach and Paul Laverty received a rapturous welcome at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival Photo: Film Service Kviff Rarely can a film festival and two filmmakers seem such a perfect match as the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival with its egalitarian approach and a preoccupation with social issues and director Ken Loach and his writing collaborator Paul Laverty who share the same values.
The match was celebrated when Loach and Laverty (Cannes Palme d’Or winner I, Daniel Blake, Bread And Roses, The Wind That Shakes The Barley, Carla’s Song among many), were given an ecstatic welcome by audiences when they received Crystal Globes for Outstanding Contributions to World Cinema, while Land And Freedom and Sweet Sixteen were screened in a section that marked 30 Years of the European Film Academy.

Fourth of July movies: A few recommended titles that should help you temporarily escape current global madness Two thousand and seventeen has been a weirder-than-usual year on the already pretty weird Planet Earth. Unsurprisingly, this Fourth of July, the day the United States celebrates its Declaration of Independence from the British Empire, has been an unusual one as well. Instead of fireworks, (at least some) people's attention has been turned to missiles – more specifically, a carefully timed North Korean intercontinental ballistic missile test indicating that Kim Jong-un could theoretically gain (or could already have?) the capacity to strike North America with nuclear weapons. Then there were right-wing trolls & history-deficient Twitter users berating National Public Radio for tweeting the Declaration of Independence, 140 characters at a time. Besides, a few days ago the current U.S. president retweeted a video of himself body-slamming and choking a representation of CNN – courtesy of a gif originally created by a far-right Internet...

A look back at the highest kicks (and notes) over the history of the Tony Awards telecast celebrating Broadway “Grand Hotel” (1990) Michael Jeter, perhaps best known from the sitcom “Evening Shade,” was a rubber-limbed sensation playing a tipsy bookkeeper in the number “Let’s Take a Glass Together.” “Dreamgirls” (1992) Jennifer Holliday’s rendition of “And I’m Telling You…” has been widely imitated, and this is the performance that is most often imitated. A-ma-zing. “Rent” (1996) Jonathan Larson’s rock opera version of “La Boheme” gained extra poignance with his unexpected death after the first Off Broadway preview. The show became a phenomenon,...
