Mars Journey
Hitchcoc3 December 2018
Felix makes a political speech about space travel. He is laughed at until he shoots an arrow into the sky which pops the tire of a guy riding a bicycle on the rings of Saturn. He is kicked off this planet and lands on Mars. There he meets the king and because he does him a favor, he is allowed to stay and be shown respect. Of course, once you give Felix anything, it puts you on dangerous ground. This is an OK cartoon.

Astronomeous review

While campaigning for President, Felix climbs a rope to Mars. The more of these Felix cartoons I see the more convinced I am that everyone involved was on mind-changing drugs at the time.

Solid FELIX effort, with Adventurous Plot line
Popeye-89 December 2005
A very enjoyable Felix the Cat cartoon, which features Felix (as a candidate for 'cat president', apparently) promising to find a better place for cats--and courtesy of his bow and arrow, establishes a rope climb straight to Mars!

The action features the "king" of Mars, as well as quality animation of Felix taking on a shooting star--very well drawn, and very entertaining!

This was likely a silent film that has been butchered with poor cuts (to remove the word 'balloons' that was a hallmark of the series) and adds a shrill soundtrack, but these are the only real distractions to a cultural and historical gem.

More weird and adventurous than usual for the time period.

In the early 1920s, the Felix the Cat cartoons were the best toons available. The biggest reason is that they were crazy...filled with some of the strangest and most inventive gags. But by the late 20s, the cartoons became more normal (yuck!) and the quality of the animation just didn't keep up with the ever-improving competition. by 1928, Felix was still going strong but Disney and Fleischer Brothers animations of the day were better and soon were the rage. "Astronomeous" is a rare Felix cartoon of this later period, as it's crazy and very inventive...and if the studio had just kept this zany spirit and improved the animation quality, the films would have continued indefinitely. Instead, by the early 30s, the series would be dead.

When the film begins, Felix is making some sort of speech on the radio. Perhaps he's running for office...it isn't clear. Regardless, he soon shoots an arrow into space with a string attached to it and it hits a guy on Saturn! Felix pulls himself up to Saturn on the string and soon is kicked off Saturn and onto Mars...which he finds very nice. Soon he invites all the cats on Earth to join him.

The plot is insane and that is why I like this one. Yes, the animation is only so-so...but quality plots and inventiveness can make up for a lack of quality in other departments.

By the way, although there is sound in this cartoon, it was added later in attempt to make the silent Felix cartoons more marketable-- a common practice after folks started clamouring for sound cartoons in the late 1920s.
