Carey Wethersbee ( Mae Marsh ) lives with her Aunt Lucretia ( Sara Alexander ) in an old Southern mansion, which they impress with a feeling of the antebellum South, through their quaint manners and outmoded dresses. When her Aunt dies, Carey decides to "go visiting" in the North. She journeys to a small town and announces her intention to install herself in the home of wealthy mill owner Hiram Ward ( Wyndham Standing ). Bachelor Hiram is appalled, but his friends convince him to allow her to stay. Carey visits Hiram's mill, where she is shocked and saddened by the wretched conditions under which the employees labour. She distributes money among the workers, but it fails to avert a strike, and when the mill is blown up, she steadfastly defends the accused man. Through her influence, Hiram's attitude towards his employees softens, and he agrees to improve conditions. Hiram grows to love the unspoiled Carey, and she eventually returns his affections.
What a tragic loss The Glorious Adventure is for silent cinema. Starring the remarkable actress Mae Marsh, this 1918 drama was one of the last made in the Kinemacolor process. The brilliant Gottfried Wilhelm "Billy" Bitzer, was the cinematographer and it was filmed on location at the Hermitage Estate, Savannah, Georgia by the Goldwyn Pictures Corporation. One can only hope a copy of this film survives and someday resurfaces.
