John Hallet, a well-to-do man about town, has an uncontrollable passion for associating with stage folk, and his escapades with them have occasioned much gossip. His sister, hoping to reform him by introducing him into her own set, invites him to a lawn party at her country home. Here he meets his heart's fate in the person of Dorothy McLean and makes love to her. She, knowing of his convivial habits, repulses him, but with characteristic persistency he continues his unwelcome attentions. Finally, in despair, Dorothy escapes with her aunt to the seashore, only to be closely followed by John, where his assaults upon her heart become more persistent and her refusals more emphatic. His attempt to abduct her in a rolling chair causes him to run for his life from an angry crowd. Bribing the life savers, he plans a rescue from the waves, only to be the rescued one himself. Dorothy and her aunt return to the city, be follows, and then it occurs to him that perhaps the better way to win the young lady's affections would be to call at her home and present his card. This he does that evening, dressed in his best, and he seems so different from the "fresh" individual she has known that she immediately capitulates and permits the inevitable embrace and kiss.
