Didn't Read the Book, So Only Judging the Show
30 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
If I had to describe this show, it would be Get Out meets They Cloned Tyrone, especially with the twist reveal. It also reminded me of Sorry to Bother You.

I got curious about the show after seeing the trailer. The biggest criticism I have for the show is the use of red herrings. I know they wanted to keep it ambiguous over what was really going on at Wagner, but I feel like once you find out the twist, the red herrings don't make sense, like the supernatural moments. Why was Nella seeing ghosts even when she was awake? What was causing the lights to flicker everywhere? It doesn't get explained and you are left with the realization that those were just trailer scenes to mislead viewers, which is disappointing.

Overall, I was kept in suspense and found the characters likable. I was worried about Nella and her friend who is the voice of reason in the show.

I've never read the book this show was based on, so I can't speak for what changes were made in the adaptation process. I did roll my eyes occasionally at some of the political takes in the show (yes, I'm black. We're not a monolith), but they weren't so heavy-handed that I couldn't enjoy myself. The white boyfriend was almost a non-entity. I know Nella has a white boyfriend in the book, but in the show, he almost serves no purpose. Most of his scenes could be cut out and just replaced with more scenes of the best friend, Malaika. It seemed like the writers went out of their way to write an inoffensive white guy, and went too far into making him boring. You can write interesting nerdy white guys who are more eager to join the mystery plot.

I didn't mind the twist because I had already seen They Cloned Tyrone, so if you couldn't suspend your disbelief there, you won't be able to here either. Overall, I would recommend this show to others, but give them a heads up on the flaws of series. It's not for everyone.
