Review of Dune

Dune (1984)
6/10
"The spice must flow."

FILM: 6.5 As I settled in to watch Dune, I couldn't shake off the buzz surrounding its reputation as a near unfilmable project. Despite being butchered by the studios, with almost half of its runtime excised, this sprawling, ambitious epic still manages to make a mark. From the get-go, I was drawn in by the creative designs and visuals that transport you to the distant future. The sandworms alone are worth the price of admission!

The performances in Dune are another highlight. While some characters feel a bit underdeveloped due to the shortened runtime, the cast delivers strong performances that keep you engaged. I found myself particularly impressed by Sting. His deliciously over the top turn delivers entertainment value in spades.

One thing that stood out to me was the pacing. Owing to the condensed runtime, Dune manages to keep the story moving at a decent pace. There are moments of excitement and intrigue interspersed with quieter, more reflective scenes that allow you to catch your breath.

Of course, Dune isn't without its flaws. The truncated runtime means that many plot points feel rushed, and certain characters don't get the development they deserve. Additionally, the film's dense mythology may be off-putting to those unfamiliar with the source material, confounded further by plot leaps courtesy of an overly judicious editor's knife. Due credit must be given to David Lynch though. His tenacity in attempting such a project is worthy of recognition.

Overall, I'd say Dune is a middling but slightly positive experience. It may not reach the heights of its source material, but it's still an entertaining ride with enough creative flair and strong performances to make it worth a watch. Just don't expect it to revolutionise the sci-fi genre.
