Beautiful, clever, insightful story about the tradition of telling bedtime stories
27 February 2024
With the low reviews I wasn't expecting much from this film and was so pleasantly surprised at the well acted well told intelligent story on offer.

The characters were so well conceived and the casting so perfect I didn't doubt them for a second.

But what really shone (and I should have known if I'd read the screen writing credit of Charlie Kaufman) was the intelligent well written multi layered story.

On the surface about a kid addressing his fears, but then the layer beneath that that I found really interesting was the adult boy creating a bedtime story for his daughter in real time and talking to her about how she would like the story to go. Have experienced exactly this it resonated brilliantly and strongly for me, and the story never let up, always going to the next level with something interesting, entertain and unexpected.

I don't understand the low score and some of the reviews. Was it too clever for most people?

It worked on a warm, familiar level but you also had to keep your attention firmly in place to follow it.

It delivered all the way through and made a perfect landing, and there were some really lever funny lines in it. "Fun is just the word people use to hide fear".

This will get a few watches in our house hold.
