The gameplay is fun, for the most part. The final sequence is a bit contrived, from a gameplay standpoint.
The graphics were groundbreaking for their time. Still hold up decently well, besides the faces.
The dialogue, however, is very cheesy. I'm sure it works better in the original Japanese. Something was lost in the translation, I think.
It also has a "I'm 14 and this is deep" type of theme.
For it's groundbreaking nature and influence on the entire medium, it deserves a high score. But I docked it points for it's faux-deep themes and extremely cheesy dialogue. Also, the cutscenes are WAY too long for my taste.
