a study of motel life in florida
2 December 2023
Features families living in a low budget motel, just outside the disney property. The rude, precocious kids scootie and moonie terrorize the other local residents out of boredom. Over-worked and underpaid manager bobby tries to deal with it all. Some fun visuals. The ice cream shop is in the shape of an ice cream cone. And the future land motel has rockets out front. I can't help but think of the children's book "the pink motel", by carol ryrie Brink, written in 1959. That basic premise was turned into an R rated film in 1982. With phyllis diller and slim pickens! Those were based on the actual pink motel, in los angeles, which is pretty much just a movie set location these days. And wouldn't you know it, the motel in florida project is a purple-ish pink. It's interesting, as a study in living standards and economics. At first, we feel sorry for the guy who bought fake passes; then we find out he was up to no good as well! The acting is so-so by the children, but we get the idea. And so many helicopters! Willem defoe nominated for an oscar. Directed by sean baker, who seems to direct films of people down on their luck, or who just can't get ahead in life. I had previously seen his film red rocket. It's interesting to watch.
