A strange and ambitious but flawed thriller
17 October 2023
Antikörper, Christian Alvarts debut film, is a strange hybrid between creativity and plagiarism, between harrowing realism and hyperbolic biblical references, and between astute sociological observations and insipid plot-driven turn-of-events. In short, Alvart demonstrates his talent, but ultimately fails in making the film he aims for. This is partly due to an excessive level of ambition and partly due to the fact that the script lacks maturity and perspective at a few key points. Alvart could be forgiven for his overt fascination for The Silence of the Lambs or Seven, his sensationalistic antagonist (outrageously played by André Hennicke), his plot's constructed character-dependencies, and even his largely forced allegories, but that would require his film to come off as more integral and the seams in the plot less noticeable. Antikörper is a worthy effort by a clearly talented filmmaker, but as a whole, it's simply too flawed.
