Cameraman: The Life and Work of Jack Cardiff
26 September 2023
Fascinating insight into the wonderful creative work of Jack Cardiff who was working into his nineties. A long list of luminaries turn out to sing his praises, covering how he made actors look so good, how fast he worked and most interesting of all some of the many tricks he used in the forties and fifties to get the right shot. Also of interest was his love of painting - he seemed pretty good - and the very clear link between paintings in general and the cinematic pictures he framed in his career.

Whilst Cardiff himself, who seems like a decent sort of bloke, believes camera work is improving, it does seem that the gifts he bought to say The Red Shoes are no longer applicable as tastes move on - a point hammered home, as always, by Martin Scorsese.
