I don't think the 5 star reviews were written by real people. This movie is generic bubble gum with no flavor. And it's such a shame because we want children's films based on legends or fairy tales from around the world. The hero is unlikable throughout and learns nothing from his journey (although he tells us he did at the end, just before he does his "Kowabunga Dude!" pose, and the credits role.) The Monkey King (2023) isn't a story, it's a product to be consumed and immediately forgotten. Without a doubt one of the worst movies of all time.
The plot is really messy and it feels like each scene is a build up to something but eventually it's just a terrible build up to nothing.
