Donnie's misfire
4 September 2023
BALLISTIC KISS is a cross between arthouse noir and heroic bloodshed shoot-em-up, not only starring genre mainstay Donnie Yen but directed by him too. Sadly, Donnie's talents in front of the camera don't really translate well to behind the camera, and as such this ends up being a ponderous bore. It's dated in that ancient-looking late 1990s way, with lots of blue filters and weird editing choices that sap energy from the production. The story, which appears to have been written on the fly by Bey Logan, is yet another variant on the old hitman-falls-in-love theme, dishing unmemorable characters and routine action scenes. A brief Rongguang Yu cameo isn't enough to save this misfire.
