This Western from director Roy Rowland is fairly unremarkable. Every so often there is an interesting ambiguity in William Ludwig's screenplay, such as Arch Johnson's bad guy actually given some depth of characterization, that briefly lifts it above the standardization line. But for the most part it takes two of the Western genre's hoariest story cliches, namely the gun fighter who longs to hang 'em up but cannot and the evil cattlemen versus the hard working farmers, and does virtually nothing unexpected or fresh with them. And the scenes with the director's kid playing Stew Granger's disaffected son are some of the worst Hollywood thespian nepotism till Sophia Coppola came along, in "Godfather 3". Give it a C.

PS...Let me welcome Rhonda Fleming to the 1950s/Early 60s Under Rated Actress Society whose honored president is Jane Russell and whose distinguished members include Stella Stevens, Angie Dickenson, Constance Towers and Vera Miles.
