unpolished gem

Not Only But Always (2004) A dramatized movie on the life and relationships of Peter Cook, Principally the key relationship with Dudley Moore. Rhys Ifans and Aiden Mcardle. Wow this is heavy going, yet it is stunning and a gripping throughout, but the cruelty and insults that Cook throws at Moore make for a difficult watch. Cook is a just about functioning alcoholic, yet he remains witty and funny throughout but you wouldn't want to have him in your life for long. Sadly for Moore his earliest success depended on Cook. Witness the recording of Derek and Clive to see how Cook was given a free reign in the hope that there would be some comic gems within. They did have a chemistry which worked although very destructive for both parties, Moore was eventually able to free himself and make a successful career in the states. Cook also moved onto an alternative comedic career, fuelled by booze. It does appear that at the tail end of his life he did find a semblance of happiness with his 3rd wife.

The film is heavy going but a gem. 8/10.
