Dixieland Jazz Version of It's a Wonderful Life
12 August 2023
Louis Armstrong. If reading that name didn't stir an ounce of excitement, then there's probably not much point to view this film. If after reading the name music started playing in your head, then by all means fire up this movie. Borderline musical, the film focuses primarily on the rising 'rock star' life of the jazz musician Red Nichols and his star-studded crew which also includes Glenn Miller and Jimmy Dorsey.

Story-wise, this is a drama with ups and downs, wondering at what point the wheel is going to stop. Tragedy, triumph, a few points of light hearted humour, and there ya go. Elements are a bit copy-paste for films of the day, dialogue and resolutions are oversimplified, and characters are given traits to make them more endearing. Acting is well done, Danny Kaye and Barbara Bel Geddes bring a believable dynamic to the script. In summary, great music if you're into the genre, good acting, and a simplified yet moving story that would've benefited from better writing.
