The Damned (1969)

Visconti Extravagance 10000

Revolving around a rich family as they try to navigate their way during the rise of Nazi Germany. From a troubled son and his Freudian relationships, a set of family members critically concerned with the rise of the Nazi and the central parents who is trying their best to fit in. It details some key important moments of Nazi Germany and its affects to the rich of the time. This film still harks the glorious extravagance that Visconti was known for.

The gloss and melodrama just did not stick this time around. I guess it just feels too glamorized and sentimentalized that it lost some of the heat of its earthier Fascist film cousins. In addition, its a bit too overlong. I felt that it drags in some section and its screenplay ungodly draws conclusion for its narrative, which is a big minus point for me.

Overall, an overdrawn picture that would have been better had it been snipped in some places.
