3/10
Way overrated.

Perhaps I'm a bit jaded towards the main song because of how painfully overplayed it is, so I'll leave that out of my review.

Either way, my only thoughts while watching A Star Is Born can be boiled down to "this is a Wattpad fanfiction". I mean, come on. Super famous musician (Harry Styles) meets girl (Y/N), is immediately entranced by her angelic voice, asks why she isn't already famous. "I have an ugly nose", she says. "I think you're beautiful," he says. "Nooo stoooop," she says. Cue a parking lot scene in public, filled with second hand embarrassment, as the girl just belts out one of her original songs containing the most unimaginative lyrics you can think of. Before she knows it her love at first sight story with this wonderful (but troubled) celebrity heartthrob has gotten her a career as a pop superstar. Do you see where I'm going with this?

I understand that A Star Is Born is a remake of a remake of a remake etc., but honestly. Haven't we beaten this storyline into the ground enough already? Was it really necessary to add to the growing pile of stories using the same drab concept? In 2018? The first few versions were enough, in my opinion. The fact that the only new thing that the movie managed to bring to the table is a dog is just embarrassing.

However I will say, the cinematography was quite pleasant, I did love Charlie the dog despite my previous comment, and Lady Gaga's acting was surprisingly good, supported by her powerful voice. Beyond that, Bradley Cooper is of course always a joy to watch on screen. I'm just surprised that there was nobody that was young enough (or brave enough) to tell him that his vanity project is an exact replica of a clichéd story that has been overdone and mocked into a widespread joke. Frankly, I'm surprised that more people didn't pick up on the connection.

If you had shown me this movie when I was twelve, then maybe I would've liked it. I wish that I could use the excuse that the movie was made for preteens, but the R rating throws that theory out the window. Overall, it's a no for me. Nice acting, some admittedly catchy songs, and some pretty scenes do not make up for a hilariously boring plot that couldn't end sooner.
