Needle (2010)
4/10
Watchable, but not an outstanding horror movie...
4 March 2023
When I sat down here in 2023 to watch the 2010 Australian horror movie "Needle", it was without ever having heard about the movie. So I didn't know what I was in for here, aside from it being a horror movie. In fact, I hadn't even checked who was on the cast list. It was a horror movie that I hadn't already seen, and that was sufficient to make me give the movie a chance.

Writers Anthony Egan and John V. Soto put together a script and storyline that made for a watchable enough movie. It wasn't a particularly outstanding horror experience, but there were some moments here and there throughout the 90 minutes that the movie ran for that were okay. And for a seasoned horror veteran, such as myself, then "Needle" was a mere walk through the park.

The movie had Travis Fimmel on the cast list, not that it was something that had me worked up. But it was fun to see Jane Badler make a short appearance on the screen; I wasn't expecting that.

Visually then "Needle" does have some nice enough gory scenes and the effects look pretty good. However, having good special effects just doesn't cut it for a storyline that is subpar, but it helps. And so it was with the special effects in "Needle", because they made the movie a bit more bearable to sit through. There wasn't a whole lot of brutality and killing in the movie, so not even there could the movie harvest some much needed easy points.

If you are a newcomer to the horror genre, then perhaps "Needle" is a better movie experience. However, this is hardly a movie that I would recommend to fans of the horror genre, nor is it a movie that I will be returning to watch a second time.

My rating of director John V. Soto's 2010 movie "Needle" lands on a four out of ten stars.
