Mexican version of Anna Karenina
22 February 2023
Adapting Leo Tolstoy's 1877 novel Anna Karenina is not an easy task. It's a complex novel with a lot of storylines and characters. But this version is surprisingly good, considering the fact that it takes place in modern Mexico.

I liked the cast. The lead actress does a great job, showing Ana's struggles and personal dilemmas. Secondary characters are also fine. They even tried to save some of the characters' original names.

The only noticeable difference between is the background, I guess. The original novel is set in the Russian Empire which was a very conservative society where a romance between a married woman and a young man was simply unimaginable. I guess now it doesn't seem so rare and controversial. Some traditional values are also altered to make it more modern. But still the story is nicely adapted and the writers did a very impressive work trying to modernize it and even give it a Mexican flavor.

Long story short, it's a good version of a classic novel. If you like Russian literature you might enjoy it but watch it in Spanish.
