The 1970s was the greatest decade as far as sports movies go. One classic after another came out during those years. "Rocky", "Rocky II", "Slap Shot", "North Dallas Forty", "The Bad News Bears" to name only a few. Muhammad Ali's "The Greatest" doesn't come anywhere close to those films. It doesn't even come close to Barbra Streisand's "The Main Event". "The Greatest" is a good looking movie and non-actor Ali does a pretty good job but the movie is a painful watch. One heavy handed scene after another. There's a ton of speechifying going on. It never seems to stop. "The Greatest" ends up being a self-serving bore.
